The single most useful fact here is the one most articles skip. In the National Coffee Association's words: “Espresso is not a type of coffee bean or even a roast. It's a coffee drink, named after the method used to brew it.” The same beans can be brewed either way. What differs is how: espresso uses a fine grind, about 9 bar of pressure, a ratio near 1:2 and 20 to 30 seconds; drip coffee uses a medium grind, gravity alone, a ratio near 1:15 to 1:18 and about five minutes. Everything people attribute to “espresso beans” comes out of that difference.

Bags labelled “espresso” are real, and buying one is not a mistake — but the label describes an intention, not a species or a process the beans went through. The National Coffee Association states it plainly: “Espresso is not a type of coffee bean or even a roast. It's a coffee drink, named after the method used to brew it.”
What an espresso-labelled bag usually signals is a roast taken a little further and a blend chosen to taste good when concentrated: more chocolate and caramel, less delicate acidity, and enough body to survive being diluted with milk. Those are useful signals. They are not requirements. You can pull excellent espresso from a bag labelled for filter, and you can brew excellent filter coffee from a bag labelled for espresso — and plenty of specialty roasters now decline to label bags either way for exactly this reason.

Read down the pressure row first, because everything else follows from it. Forcing water through coffee in 25 seconds requires a fine grind to slow it down, a fine grind requires a small amount of water or it would over-extract, and a small amount of water is what makes the result concentrated and syrupy. Espresso is not “stronger coffee”; it is a different arrangement of the same three variables.

This is where most comparisons mislead, by answering a different question than the reader asked.
Per millilitre, espresso is far more caffeinated. It is a concentrate: a similar amount of caffeine in a tenth of the liquid.
Per serving, a mug of drip coffee usually contains more caffeine than a single espresso, because a 240 ml mug is eight to ten times the volume of a 30 ml shot and was brewed with a comparable amount of coffee to begin with.
So “espresso has more caffeine” and “coffee has more caffeine” are both true, about different measures. The gap in equipment is much wider than the gap in the cup, and it is the real decision behind this question.
Drip and filter coffee need a brewer, a grinder that reaches medium, and hot water. A $30 pour-over cone makes coffee that is genuinely competitive with a café's filter offering. Nothing about the method resists a beginner.
Espresso needs a machine that can hold roughly 9 bar and a stable brew temperature, and — this is the part people underestimate — a grinder that adjusts finely enough to control a 25-second window. Almost every café menu item is espresso plus something. A americano is espresso plus hot water; a latte is espresso plus steamed milk; a cappuccino is espresso with a thicker foam cap; a flat white is espresso with microfoam. None of them has a drip-coffee equivalent, because drip coffee is already diluted — adding milk to it gives you weak milky coffee rather than a distinct drink.
That is the strongest practical argument for espresso equipment, and it has nothing to do with which method makes better black coffee. If the drinks you want are lattes and cappuccinos, you need espresso. If what you want is a good mug of black coffee in the morning, filter is cheaper, easier and arguably better at exactly that job.
