The date does not move. What moves is the weekday, which matters more than it sounds: a September 29 that lands on a weekday, as it does in 2026, is the version chains prefer, because the morning commute is when a free-cup offer does its work. Next year it falls on Wednesday, September 29, 2027. If you are reading this before the day, the count at the top of the page is live.
Search for the date and you will find both, stated with equal confidence, and both are right. National Coffee Day is the American observance on September 29, shared by Canada and a handful of other countries. International Coffee Day is October 1, the date the International Coffee Organization's member states chose in March 2014 so that the coffee-growing and coffee-drinking world would have a single shared day. Other countries keep their own national dates across the calendar — Wikipedia's table of national coffee days runs from January to December — but for anyone in the United States the practical calendar is a three-day stretch: the 29th, a quiet 30th, and the 1st.
The chains have noticed the overlap. In 2025 at least one national roaster ran its offer from September 29 through October 1 rather than on a single day, and loyalty-point bonuses were framed around the week rather than the date. For a coffee drinker the distinction is mostly this: September 29 is the day for a free cup at a counter; October 1 is the day the producing side of the industry, from cooperatives to exporters, gets its attention, and the ICO uses it to talk about the people who grow the crop.
The American date has the murkier record. National Coffee Day was being mentioned publicly in the United States by 2005, and no single founder, brand or body claims it; it appears to have grown the way most food-and-drink observances do, by chains adopting a convenient late-September date for promotions until the date became the thing. The popular explanation that it marks the return to work after summer is a guess, and this page treats it as one.
International Coffee Day is documented. In March 2014 the member states of the International Coffee Organization agreed to organise it on October 1 as a single global day of celebration. The first official International Coffee Day was launched in Milan on October 1, 2015, during Expo Milan 2015, alongside the ICO's first Global Coffee Forum and the 115th session of the International Coffee Council. The ICO describes the day as a celebration of the sector's diversity and quality, and as a way to support the farmers whose livelihoods depend on the crop; recent editions have carried annual themes, and the 2024 edition took collaboration as its theme ahead of the United Nations' International Year of Cooperatives in 2025.
Why this matters for a page about deals: the two days have different purposes. One is a retail moment. The other was built to point attention up the supply chain. A bag of coffee with a named farm or cooperative on it is the most direct way an ordinary drinker takes part in the second, which is one reason the beans below are chosen from a published award rather than from a price list.
Three things are true of nearly every National Coffee Day offer of the last several years. They run through the chain's app or rewards programme, not at the counter on request. They are usually limited to one per member and often require a purchase. And they are announced late, typically in the last few days of September, which is why a page published in advance can only report the previous year honestly. Read the table for its shape rather than its specifics. Free coffee with a purchase is a discount on the purchase; bonus points are worth what you would have spent to earn them anyway; a percentage off a bag is the one offer that changes what you drink for the next month.
