Pick your current machine from the catalog, or choose "Other / not sure" and we'll ask how capable it is. Your upgrade advice is only as good as this answer.

Which type is it?

Your current grinder determines whether you have a grinder bottleneck. "None / pre-ground" is the strongest grinder-first signal.

How capable is it?

The full amount you're putting toward this upgrade. It decides whether the budget covers a machine, a grinder, or both.

How we decide

Every verdict comes from a deliberately small, curated catalog and a documented capability model — never a database of thousands, and never a manufactured need.

The grinder matters more

The espresso community consensus is: Barista • Coffee • Grinder • Espresso Machine — the grinder is the higher-leverage contributor. So grinder-first is our default, with a documented exception list: a machine that can't hold temperature or pressure, or a grinder that's already capable.

Capability tiers

Every machine and grinder is classified into a capability tier (M0–M3 / G0–G3) from verified manufacturer specs and independent sources — never assumed. Your two tiers are compared to find the real bottleneck.

Honest verdicts

If your setup is already strong or your budget can't fund a meaningful step, we say so — including a "don't upgrade yet" verdict. We never invent an upgrade to force a sale, and we never recommend a lateral move or downgrade.

Live prices, no bias

Targets carry live Amazon prices at page load; sold-direct gear (Niche, Casabrews) links the maker honestly. Commission rates never influence the verdict.
