COFFEELAB AWARDS 2026 · VENUE
Winner Sihana Cafe
CLA-NWK-2026-SC01Ironbound, 71 Ferry Street, Newark, NJ 07105 · Open since 2020 · Sihana Bistro at 159 Washington Street and Five Corners Ristorante at 10 Wilson Avenue are sister restaurants, not covered by this award.
Looking for more than one shop? The Newark coffee guide lists this year’s winner, the Honorable Mentions and how the scene is put together.
This award is an evidence-led editorial selection under a disclosed methodology — not a tasting verdict — and it is conferred on the designated Newark venue operated by the evaluated coffee business. It carries one disclosure before anything else: the 2026 Newark field is young, and the city's established specialty reference point, Black Swan Espresso, closed in October 2025. No venue eligible for this award holds a cup-judged coffee result, and no specialist-press assessment of any current venue was found in the searches we completed. This award therefore does NOT claim that Sihana Cafe makes the best coffee in Newark, and nothing on this page should be read that way. What it does claim is narrower and checkable: among the independently owned Newark coffee shops we scored, Sihana Cafe carried the strongest documented evidence across six equally weighted dimensions. It has traded at 71 Ferry Street since 2020, publishes a full espresso menu with prices, sells its house blend by the bag, and operates as part of a local group with two sister restaurants. Four of its six dimensions sit at 78 for two different reasons, and the difference matters: coffee quality and sourcing are at the rubric's “documented only” rung, because the evidence documents the inputs but nobody has described the cup or named the origins; plant-based milk and value carry the methodology's parity default, because four scored finalists published no café menu on a permitted route. The award rests on one cell above that floor — consistency — and this page names it rather than averaging it away. Evidence scores measure the strength of documented evidence available for evaluation; they are not sensory scores, inspection scores, or direct measurements of current coffee quality. CoffeeLabAdvisor scored a frozen field of six Gate-0-eligible venues; we do not publish comparative scores for the rest of the field.
71 Ferry Street, Newark, NJ 07105 — the Ironbound café at 71 Ferry Street, in a century-old building a short walk from Newark Penn Station. This award evaluates this location only; Sihana Bistro at 159 Washington Street and Five Corners Ristorante at 10 Wilson Avenue are sister restaurants, not covered by this award.
A café that has traded at one Ironbound address since 2020, with a full espresso programme, a house blend sold by the bag, local art on the walls, and a used bookstore in the room. Its documented strength is consistency: six years at one address and a large public review base. Nothing on any captured page describes how its coffee tastes or names its roaster, and this page says so rather than guessing.
Our flagship city award. An editorial selection: the independent coffee shop in the city that our documented-evidence screening selected for full scoring, carried through to a six-dimension scorecard. The rest of the field is screened and no comparative scores are published, so the award is not a ranking of the city. The award level (Gold/Silver/Bronze) is an absolute score on that shop against the published rubric, not a placing against other businesses. This is an evidence-led editorial award, not a blind tasting or citywide sensory ranking: no comparative scores for the field are published, and no claim is made that a winner would defeat every other shop in its city in a head-to-head tasting.
Bronze (80/100) — the tier follows the score: six equal-weighted dimensions totalling 480, averaging 80.00 against a Silver threshold of 81.5. Bronze is the honest tier. Consistency (86) is the only dimension above the field's documented floor, and it is the cell that decides this award: six years at 71 Ferry Street, a large public review base, and no material inconsistency pattern in any captured source. Barista & Ownership (82) rests on a local group with three Newark venues and that six-year operating record, with no named controlling person. Coffee Quality (78) and Sourcing & Transparency (78) are at the rubric's documented-only rung, not at a default: the menu and the house blend are documented, but no source describes the cup and no source names the roaster or an origin. Plant-Based Milk (78) and Value (78) are the methodology's parity default — four scored finalists published no café menu on a permitted route, so the all-or-nothing rule applies the same 78 to every finalist. This page does not present those two defaults as findings about Sihana's plant-milk programme or its prices. The margin over the next venue is four points out of 600, and the sensitivity analysis behind that margin is published in the research record rather than hidden.
Specialty coffee and tea, breakfast and lunch, local art, and a used bookstore, all under one roof on Ferry Street.
Consistency is the dimension that decided this award, and it is the only dimension on which Sihana is more than one point above the field. Sihana has traded at 71 Ferry Street since 2020; its Yelp listing records 157 reviews and Restaurantji records 240, with a 4.8 rating on the latter. Those are popularity signals, not specialist assessments, and they are used only as one input to the operating-record dimension — never as a quality verdict. Every other scored venue is younger: all five opened between spring 2025 and spring 2026. Six years at one address with no material inconsistency pattern in the captured record is the only place in this field where the rubric's “strong” consistency cell is met. A reader should know how much of the result rests there: if that placement were lowered by one cell, this award would be tied on 476 and would be decided by the published tie-break, operating record at the address.
The captured Toast menu lists espresso, cortado, cappuccino, latte, flat white, mocha, drip coffee, Americano, café con leche, red eye, chai, matcha and a house blend bag. That is a working coffee programme, and it is why this venue clears the eligibility and sourcing-documentation bar. It is not evidence of how the coffee tastes: the rubric's next rung needs a source that describes the cup, and no review, article or merchant page in our evidence set does. So Coffee Quality stays at the documented-only rung of 78 and Sourcing stays there too, because the roaster of the house blend is named nowhere. This page could have scored both higher on the strength of a menu. That is exactly the substitution the methodology forbids. The café also serves a full food menu; the award evaluates coffee only, and the food is outside scope.
It does not claim Sihana makes the best coffee in Newark. It cannot: no eligible venue in this field holds a cup-judged result, and no specialist-press assessment of a current venue was found in the searches we completed. Coffee Quality is not a dimension Sihana leads: Cova's coffee-quality placement (82 against Sihana's 78) is higher, on a named specialty roaster and a review that describes the espresso. Sihana leads on documented operating consistency, and that is the whole of the claim. The research for this cycle did not establish a specialist-community consensus identifying a single quality leader. The award is based on the published evaluation framework and the evidence documented for this cycle. A reader whose only question is who makes the best coffee in Newark should treat Cova's Honorable Mention as a better starting point, and should know that no eligible venue here holds a judged result to settle the question.
Each score rates the strength of the publicly documented evidence we found for that dimension — not first-hand testing. We did not visit this shop or taste its coffee. That is our standard evaluation tier, defined in the methodology; hands-on assessment belongs to CoffeeLab Verified, which this shop has not undertaken.
Overall: 80/100 — Bronze. Six equal-weighted dimensions per our venue awards methodology; Bronze is the absolute-rubric tier for this score, not a placing against other shops.
† These dimensions could not be evidenced, so each carries the methodology's insufficient-evidence default of 78 rather than a measurement of this shop. Two of the six dimensions in this total are therefore a default, not a finding — stated here because the overall score depends on them. It is not a neutral figure: it is a substantive assumption that unknown equals 78, and the reasoning is published in our methodology.
"Coffee Shop of the Year" names the candidate our documented evidence and specialist-signal screening selected for full scoring — it is an editorial selection, not the output of scoring every shop in the city against each other. An evidence score does not represent a current sensory rating; it reflects the strength, independence and recency of the documentation available under this programme's rubric.
What Operational Consistency measures: sustained operation and a stable, documented offer over time — longevity, continuity at the awarded address, and documented continuity of operation over time. It is not a measurement of shot-to-shot consistency in the cup, which would require in-person testing we do not perform.
Unlike general review aggregation, we grounded this in independent, named, checkable sources rather than anonymous review excerpts:
"The venue's own description: “Specialty coffee and tea, breakfast and lunch, local art, and a used bookstore, all under one roof on Ferry Street.” Also the address (71 Ferry Street, Newark, NJ 07105), hours (Monday–Saturday 7:30am–7pm; Sunday 7:30am–5pm) and the two sister restaurants. Captured 2026-10-18."
— Sihana Cafe — own site, Oct 2026
"The captured drink menu that establishes the venue's coffee programme and its prices: espresso $2.95, cortado $4.15, cappuccino $4.50, latte $5.00, flat white $4.50, mocha $5.75, drip coffee $3.95, Americano $3.95, café con leche $4.15, red eye $5.00, chai $6.00, matcha $6.00, and a Sihana Coffee House Blend bag at $10.00. The menu lists drinks without their modifier groups, so it names no roaster and no plant milk. Captured 2026-10-18. The item pages add the milk options: oat milk and almond milk at $0.75 each (latte item captured 2026-10-18)."
— Sihana Cafe — own Toast ordering profile, Oct 2026
"The operating-record input: the listing gives 2020 as the opening year and showed 157 reviews in the dated search-result snippet. The page blocks automated capture, so both figures are recorded from that snippet rather than from a captured page, and neither is used as a quality signal."
— Yelp — Sihana Café, Newark, Oct 2026
"A second public review listing: 240 reviews and a 4.8 rating in the captured search result. The page blocks automated capture; the figures are recorded from the dated search-result snippet and are used as popularity context, not as a specialist assessment."
— Restaurantji — Sihana Cafe, Newark, Oct 2026
"The city listing describes Sihana as “a combined coffee shop, restaurant, and gallery” that “fuses the haute cuisine of a European café with a minimalist coffee shop.” Captured 2026-10-18."
— Newark Happening — Sihana Café, Oct 2026
"Field context: the current Halsey Street coffee cluster and the youth of the current scene. It does not assess Sihana. Captured 2026-10-18."
— TAPinto Newark, 2026-05-01 — Halsey Street coffee cluster, May 2026
"Field context and the closure fact: the article calls Black Swan Espresso “now-shuttered” and covers the boulevard's newer cafés. Captured 2026-10-18."
— Jersey Digs, 2026-03-10 — MLK Boulevard revitalisation, Mar 2026
"A documented negative: the search returned six results, all Newark, Delaware or unrelated; no current Newark, NJ shop feature. Searched 2026-10-18."
— Daily Coffee News — search for Newark, Oct 2026
"A documented negative for the current field: the search returned a 2015 Ironbound Portuguese-coffee feature, not an assessment of any current candidate. Searched 2026-10-18."
— Sprudge — search for Newark, Oct 2026
Key specialist signals: a full espresso menu with prices; a house blend sold by the bag; six years at one address; a local group with two sister restaurants. Honesty notes: the roaster of the house blend is not named on any captured page; no competition result was found for the venue or its staff; no specialist-press assessment of the current venue was found; the review counts are platform signals, not specialist judgments; no equipment is documented; and the award is a documentary-evidence selection, not a sensory verdict. We did not taste the coffee, and this page says so wherever the numbers appear.
Not confirmed, and not guessed. No source in our evidence set documents an espresso machine, grinder or batch brewer at this venue, so this page makes no equipment claim. Shop-provided documentation for CoffeeLab Verified status would resolve this firsthand.
We do not earn commission on café equipment: professional bar machines are not sold through our affiliate programme, and nothing in this section is a product recommendation. If you want home equipment evaluated on the same evidence standard, see our Best Overall Espresso Machine award or Best Overall Burr Grinder award.
Documented on the venue's own ordering profile: oat milk and almond milk, each at a $0.75 surcharge, with half & half at $1.00; soy is not listed. The milks appear on the item pages (the menu page shows drinks without their options), which is why our first capture missed them and the page briefly said otherwise; the item page was captured on 2026-10-18. The dimension nevertheless carries the methodology's parity default, because four of the six scored finalists published no café menu on a permitted route and the all-or-nothing rule applies to every finalist. The default is a rule about missing data across the field, not a finding about this venue.

No coffee shop is perfect, and no award page should pretend otherwise. We publish these honestly so you can make an informed decision.
No venue eligible for this award holds a cup-judged coffee result, and no specialist-press assessment of a current venue was found in the searches we completed. The statement is scoped to those searches: the US Coffee Championships, Golden Bean North America and the Good Food Awards classes were searched, and the Good Food Awards winners index blocked automated access, so that class is searched and not exhausted. This is the single fairest criticism of this award and we state it rather than let a reader discover it. This page therefore makes no claim that Sihana makes the best coffee in Newark. It claims that Sihana carried the strongest documented evidence across six dimensions, four of which do not turn on judged coffee.
Four of the six scored finalists published no café menu on a permitted route. Under the all-or-nothing parity rule, both menu dimensions take the 78 default for every finalist. That default is an administrative choice, not an observation that Sihana lacks plant milk or offers poor value. The captured menu shows Sihana's prices; the rule prevents using them to separate finalists when other finalists published none. The three-menu price band is descriptive context only and is not used to imply that any finalist is better value than another. Sihana's own ordering profile does list oat and almond milk at $0.75; under the parity rule that evidence cannot lift the dimension for one venue, and it is recorded on the card above rather than in the score.
Coffee Quality and Sourcing & Transparency are at 78 because the rubric's “documented only” rung is where the evidence lands: the menu and the house blend are documented, but no source describes how the coffee tastes and no source names the roaster or an origin. Plant-Based Milk and Value are at 78 because of the parity default. The first is a finding about the evidence; the second is a choice about missing data. An award that printed four bare 78s without that distinction would be hiding the difference between “we could not document it” and “we chose not to score it”.
The menu sells a “Sihana Coffee House Blend Bag” and the site describes the coffee as specialty, but no captured page names the roaster or the origins. Sourcing & Transparency is therefore held at the documented-only rung, 78. A named roaster plus a sourcing statement would move it; own or roaster documentation would resolve this.
Sihana Cafe is part of a local group with Sihana Bistro and Five Corners Ristorante, and the group is the controlling entity. The pass-1 D3 clarification permits group-level evidence, but the controlling person is not named on any captured page. That is published rather than smoothed.
No source in our evidence set documents an espresso machine, grinder or batch brewer at this venue, and this page makes no equipment claim. Shop-provided documentation would resolve this firsthand.
Black Swan Espresso, the city's most-cited specialty reference point, closed in October 2025. The scored field is six venues. Twenty-six named businesses remained unresolved because their ownership or coffee programme could not be positively established; they were not scored and are not characterised on this page.
The operating-record score uses the venue's six-year history and its public review base as context. Reviews measure popularity and aggregate sentiment, not specialty coffee judgment. We did not taste the coffee and did not assess current barista technique.
Three full menus were captured in the scored field. The four-menu price band could not be built, so the value dimension is published at the 78 default and the band is disclosed as provisional.
The venue's own About page says its guests “enjoy healthy food first and foremost.” This award evaluates coffee only; the food programme is outside scope. The coffee programme is full and documented, which is the basis for eligibility, but a reader looking for a coffee-only bar should know the venue is a café with a full food menu.

Open Status Warning: Operating status confirmed from the venue's own current published pages and its Toast ordering profile (captured 2026-10-18): 71 Ferry Street, Monday to Saturday 7:30 AM–7:00 PM and Sunday 7:30 AM–5:00 PM. We did not independently visit. Always check current hours before visiting — coffee shop status can change. If this shop has closed, please contact us so we can update this page.
CoffeeLabAdvisor does not conduct in-person shop visits. The verdict is based on the venue's own published pages and Toast ordering profile captured on 2026-10-18, the venue's public review listings, local press, and the pass-1 field research. We did not taste the coffee and did not assess current barista technique; no source we found describes how this venue's coffee tastes, which is why its coffee-quality placement sits at the documented-only rung. We did not confirm the roaster of the house blend; no source names it. We did not confirm equipment. We did confirm oat and almond milk on the venue's own ordering profile; the dimension carries the parity default regardless. We did not complete a comprehensive adverse-signal search for every scored venue; the sources we read contained no adverse finding, and that is a statement about a documented search, not a guarantee. On judged results, the statement is scoped to the searches completed: the US Coffee Championships, Golden Bean North America and the Good Food Awards classes were searched, and the Good Food Awards winners index blocked automated access, so that class is searched and not exhausted. Twenty-six named businesses remained unresolved and were not scored; they are not characterised on this page. Sihana Cafe has not shared formal documentation for CoffeeLab Verified status.
Shops that share formal documentation confirming their equipment and sourcing claims (invoices, spec sheets, roaster agreements) carry the CoffeeLab Verified badge. Sihana Cafe has not yet received one — shared documentation would confirm the equipment and roaster lineup firsthand.
Award recognition is not a verdict on any other shop. The following are recognised in their own right, for what we found in their favour.
A named-roaster coffee bar and gallery on Halsey Street, with the field's strongest coffee-quality placement and a named owner-operator.
A Cuban coffee programme with a full captured menu, from two named founders building a local brand.
An owner-operated espresso bar and kitchen that has run latte classes since opening in April 2025.
The winner is the candidate our documented-evidence screening selected for full scoring under the CoffeeLabAdvisor 2026 methodology, and the only candidate whose scorecard is published. Because no comparative scores are published, this award is not a quantitative ranking of the city and should not be read as one. An Honorable Mention is a recognition, not a placing: we do not rank the field, and nothing on this page should be read as an assessment of any business other than the winner.
