8 Chicago shops were screened for this award and every one of them was scored on the full six-dimension rubric; one scorecard — the winner's — is published, so the award is an editorial selection, not a quantitative ranking of the city. The full reasoning, source trail and honest limitations are published on the award page.

Why Metric Coffee won — the short version

A Current, Venue-Level Global Ranking — Scored at Its Floor

The strongest evidence in this field is the only current assessment of a coffee shop as a coffee shop: The World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops 2026, announced on 16 February at CoffeeFest Madrid, lists “95 Metric Illinois (USA)”. Continue on the award page →

Independence and Sourcing, Documented by the Company and Certified by a Third Party

The company’s FAQ states: “Our company is 100% independently owned, which means we focus on what matters most—coffee and people.” Its co-founder, Xavier Alexander, told Daily Coffee News in September 2025 of the new Avondale roastery: “The most remarkable part is that we built it without outside investors. Painful? Absolutely. Worth it? Continue on the award page →

Ten Years at One Address, and the People Documented There

Daily Coffee News covered the opening on 11 October 2016: “Chicago’s Metric Coffee is opening its first brick-and-mortar café attached to its Near West Chicago roastery.” It named “Metric Co-Founder Xavier Alexander, a former Intelligentsia roaster and QC specialist”, and recorded that the café “was designed by [Metric Co-Founder and Caffe Streets Owner] Darko Arandjelovic”. What the sources say

Every citation is named, dated and checkable — this is what the award actually rests on:

“The list entry reads “95 Metric Illinois (USA)” — which names the company and the state and not the café; the same list opens “1 Onyx Coffee LAB USA”.”

— The World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops 2026 — the published list, Feb 2026

“Time Out’s report: “The rankings combine public votes (30%) and expert panel evaluations (70%), assessing everything from bean quality and barista expertise to sustainability and overall atmosphere.” — the weighting this page relies on.”

— Time Out — World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops 2026: 14 Asian cafés make the global list, Feb 2026

“The announcement: “over 800 industry experts and 350,000 public votes shaped the final ranking”; “after evaluating more than 15,000 coffee shops from around the world”; unveiled “February 16 during CoffeeFest Madrid”.”

— Macau Business — The World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops 2026 with DaVinci Gourmet, Feb 2026

Also recognised in Chicago

Award recognition is not a verdict on any other shop. These are recognised in their own right, for what our research found in their favour:

⭐ Four Letter Word Coffee — Logan Square
3022 W Diversey Ave, Chicago, IL 60647
Recognised as the most broadly corroborated café in the field — named independently by national specialty trade press, city press and a city tourism guide — a roaster “devoted to roasting beautiful coffees”, in its own words, founded by Eylem Ozkaya, Kevin Heisner and Ria Neri, and serving its Logan Square café at 3022 W Diversey every day.
⭐ Kusanya Cafe
825 W 69th St, Chicago, IL 60621
Recognised for thirteen years of nonprofit coffee in Englewood — founded in 2013 by Phil Sipka, roasting its beans on-site at 825 W 69th Street, with community programming from open-mic nights to yoga, and the most accessible price in the field: Eater Chicago’s 2026 guide records that “a cup of coffee is just $1.60”.

An Honorable Mention is a recognition, not a placing — we do not rank the shops we did not score, and we do not publish scores for shops that did not receive recognition.

Chicago coffee — FAQ

Who won Best Coffee Shop in Chicago 2026?

Metric Coffee (2021 W Fulton St, Chicago, IL 60612) won the CoffeeLab Award 2026 for Best Coffee Shop in Chicago, recognised at Silver on the published six-dimension venue rubric.

How were Chicago coffee shops evaluated?

8 independent shops were screened on documented evidence — specialist press, judged competition results, and published sources — and every finalist was scored on six equal-weighted dimensions; only the winner's scorecard is published. The award is an editorial selection, not a quantitative ranking of the city; the full methodology, source trail and limitations are published.

Did CoffeeLabAdvisor visit or taste the coffee?

No. This evaluation tier uses documented evidence only — we did not visit the shops or taste the coffee, and every award page says so. Hands-on assessment belongs to the separate CoffeeLab Verified tier.

Which other Chicago shops were recognised?

Four Letter Word Coffee — Logan Square, Kusanya Cafe received Honorable Mentions — recognitions, not placings. We do not publish scores for shops that did not receive recognition.

How we evaluate

Every shop passes the same published five-gate methodology — six documented coffee dimensions, named checkable sources, honest published limitations, and no commercial influence on any selection. See the full Chicago award or all CoffeeLab Awards 2026.
