COFFEELAB AWARDS 2026 · VENUE
Winner Dogwood Coffee
CLA-MSP-2026-DW01Northeast, 1209 Tyler St NE Ste 150, Minneapolis, MN 55413 · Open since 2019 · Also at East Lake (4021 East Lake Street, Minneapolis) — a second Minneapolis address, not covered by this award. A St Paul cafe and a forthcoming Mac-Groveland site are outside this award's geography.
This award is an evidence-led editorial selection under a disclosed methodology — not a tasting verdict — and it is conferred on the designated Minneapolis venue operated by the evaluated coffee organization. It carries one disclosure that has to come before anything else: no venue eligible for this award holds a cup-judged coffee competition result of any kind. Every documented Good Food Awards result in Minnesota belongs to a company owned by a multi-brand parent and excluded from this award at the ownership gate, so the city's judged record was simply unavailable to this field. This award therefore does NOT claim that its winner makes the best coffee in Minneapolis, and nothing on this page should be read that way. What it does claim is narrower and checkable: among the independently owned Minneapolis coffee shops we screened, Dogwood Coffee carried the strongest documented evidence across six equally weighted dimensions. Roasting in the Twin Cities since 2010 under the same owner-operator, at a Northeast cafe whose roastery stands on the same premises as the bar — "on the other side of the glass wall art installation across from the cafe bar," in the venue's own words — with named single-origin producers on its own retail pages, two plant milks at no surcharge, and prices at or below the local median on all four comparison products. Evidence scores measure the strength of documented evidence available for evaluation; they are not sensory scores, inspection scores, or direct measurements of current coffee quality. CoffeeLabAdvisor evaluated a Gate-0-eligible field of six venues using its published coffee shop methodology; the winner is the candidate our documented-evidence screening selected, and we do not publish comparative scores for the rest of the field.
1209 Tyler St NE Ste 150, Minneapolis, MN 55413 — the Northeast cafe — Dogwood's roastery-and-cafe building on Tyler Street NE, where the roastery sits across from the bar behind a glass wall installation, in the venue's own description. This award evaluates this location only; Dogwood's East Lake cafe is a second Minneapolis address not covered by this award, and its St Paul cafe and forthcoming Mac-Groveland site are outside this award's geography.
A cafe that roasts on its own premises, in sight of its own bar — the strongest form of evidence transfer our methodology recognises, because company-level roasting evidence belongs to the room the coffee is served in rather than to a site across town. A continuous independent operating record under one owner-operator since 2010, named single-origin producers published on its own retail pages, and the only plant-milk policy that could be captured anywhere in the evaluated Minneapolis field. It holds no competition result, and this page claims none for it.
Our flagship city award. An editorial selection: the independent coffee shop in the city that our documented-evidence screening selected for full scoring, carried through to a six-dimension scorecard. The rest of the field is screened and no comparative scores are published, so the award is not a ranking of the city. The award level (Gold/Silver/Bronze) is an absolute score on that shop against the published rubric, not a placing against other businesses. This is an evidence-led editorial award, not a blind tasting or citywide sensory ranking: no comparative scores for the field are published, and no claim is made that a winner would defeat every other shop in its city in a head-to-head tasting.
Silver (87/100) — the tier follows the score: six equal-weighted dimensions totalling 522, averaging 87.00 against a Gold threshold of 89.5. Every figure on this page is a documentary-evidence score, not a sensory rating, and every score cites its evidence band — with each underlying fact scoring exactly once. This is the first award in the programme where the winner carries no defaulted dimension: all six are scored on captured evidence. Coffee Quality (88) rests on a specialist-press visit by a named national writer, published 2019 — placed at the floor of its band, not its top, because the currency rule bars a seven-year-old assessment from a band's reserved top and because much of the assessment inside it is quoted from the owner rather than written by the journalist. Sourcing & Transparency (85) rests on named single-origin producers from Colombia, Ethiopia and Kenya published on its own retail pages plus a single-origin subscription programme, held below the top of its band because no audited or itemised per-lot transparency report could be located. Barista & Ownership (86) rests on a documented owner-operator record since 2010 with no competition credential of any kind. Operational Consistency (89) is the highest score on this page: continuous operation since 2010, this address documented from 2019, a second Minneapolis cafe, and current trading verified from the venue's own site and its own ordering platform. Plant-Based Milk (87) and Value (87) are both captured rather than defaulted — two plant milks at no surcharge, and prices at or below the median on all four products against a local band built from four captured menus. Scoring below.
Our roastery is located on the other side of the glass wall art installation across from the cafe bar.
Our methodology transfers company-level evidence to a venue in full only where the roasting operation is at the venue itself, and at a reduced degree where the roastery sits somewhere else. Dogwood is the only cafe in the evaluated Minneapolis field that qualifies for the full transfer, and the evidence for it is the venue's own published description of its room: "Our roastery is located on the other side of the glass wall art installation across from the cafe bar." Same building, in sight of the bar, behind glass. Where a company roasts somewhere other than the venue under evaluation, that venue enters at the reduced transfer instead — a consequence of the rule applied evenly across the field, and never a judgement about anyone's coffee.
Dogwood has roasted in the Twin Cities since 2010 with no acquisition reported, and has traded at this Northeast address since 2019 — the longest continuous independent record in the evaluated field. Independence here is not an assumption: three of Minneapolis's better-known specialty roasters are now owned by a single multi-brand parent, and we read that parent's own brands page directly rather than inferring anything. Dogwood is absent from it. That check is also what removed the city's entire judged coffee record from this award, and we would rather state that plainly than let the award look stronger than it is.
Two plant milks, oat and almond, both at no surcharge, captured from the venue's own ordering system with the store pinned to this address. The only milk option that costs extra is breve, which is dairy. In sixteen other city awards this dimension has usually carried a disclosed default because most cafes publish no capturable plant-milk policy at all; here it is scored on evidence, and it reaches the same level as the programme's existing benchmark for this dimension.
It does not claim Dogwood makes the best coffee in Minneapolis. It cannot: no eligible venue in this field holds a cup-judged coffee result, and Coffee Quality is not the dimension Dogwood leads on. The field's only current independent press assessment, and the only national roasting championship held anywhere in it, belong to a business that is recognised below rather than to this winner. Dogwood won on breadth: integration, longevity, captured menu evidence and captured plant-milk evidence across six dimensions, four of which do not turn on judged coffee at all. An independent reviewer who scored this field blind, with the candidates redacted and no sight of our conclusion, reached the same winner and the same two honourable mentions — and reached them for the same stated reason, that these bands reward breadth and capturability rather than peak. Popularity metrics — review counts, reader polls — are recorded as context and score nothing anywhere in this evaluation.
Each score rates the strength of the publicly documented evidence we found for that dimension — not first-hand testing. We did not visit this shop or taste its coffee. That is our standard evaluation tier, defined in the methodology; hands-on assessment belongs to CoffeeLab Verified, which this shop has not undertaken.
Overall: 87/100 — Silver. Six equal-weighted dimensions per our venue awards methodology; Silver is the absolute-rubric tier for this score, not a placing against other shops.
"Coffee Shop of the Year" names the candidate our documented evidence and specialist-signal screening selected for full scoring — it is an editorial selection, not the output of scoring every shop in the city against each other. An evidence score does not represent a current sensory rating; it reflects the strength, independence and recency of the documentation available under this programme's rubric.
What Operational Consistency measures: sustained operation and a stable, documented offer over time — longevity, continuity at the awarded address, and documented continuity of operation over time. It is not a measurement of shot-to-shot consistency in the cup, which would require in-person testing we do not perform.
Unlike general review aggregation, we grounded this in independent, named, checkable sources rather than anonymous review excerpts:
"The integration evidence in the venue's own words: "Our roastery is located on the other side of the glass wall art installation across from the cafe bar." Also the address (1209 Tyler Street NE, Minneapolis, MN 55413) and the standing hours: "Monday - Friday // 7AM - 7PM", "Saturday - Sunday // 8AM - 6PM". Captured 2026-10-07."
— Dogwood Coffee — own Northeast Cafe page, Oct 2026
"The captured menu and milk policy. Latte item dialog, Milk Options: "Whole", "Oat", "Breve $0.50", "Almond" — two plant milks at no surcharge, the only priced milk being dairy. Prices, each at the smallest published size, which is the basis the local band is built on for every venue in it: drip $3.75, espresso $3.50, cappuccino $4.75, latte $5.25 (10oz). Where the menu publishes a size range the lower figure is the one shown. Captured 2026-10-07 with the store explicitly selected, because an unpinned capture returns another city's store."
— Dogwood Coffee — own ordering system, store pinned to 1209 Tyler St NE, Oct 2026
"The second Minneapolis address: "4021 East Lake Street", "Monday - Friday // 7AM - 7PM", "Saturday // 8AM - 7PM". Establishes breadth within the award geography. Captured 2026-10-07."
— Dogwood Coffee — own East Lake Cafe page, Oct 2026
"The sourcing evidence: named single-origin lots with named producers — "COLOMBIA // JUAN MARTIN GESHA", "ETHIOPIA // WUSH WUSH NATURAL", "COLOMBIA // DIEGO PARRA BELTRAN WASHED", "KENYA // KII WASHED" — plus a single-origin subscription programme. No audited or itemised per-lot transparency report appears anywhere on the site, which is why the dimension is held below the top of its band. Captured 2026-10-07."
— Dogwood Coffee — own retail pages, Oct 2026
"The specialist-press visit behind the Coffee Quality score: a named national writer at a national specialty publication, visiting these premises. Read in full on 2026-10-07. Cited without quotation because this item is not among our capture files, and much of the assessment inside it is in the owner's voice rather than the journalist's — both reasons the dimension is scored at its band floor rather than its top."
— Sprudge (2019) — Jordan Michelman, "Inside the New Dogwood Coffee Roasters HQ", Jan 2019
"The ownership gate, read directly rather than inferred. Three better-known Minneapolis roasters are listed as brands of this parent and are excluded from this award; Dogwood is absent from the roster. This is also what removed Minnesota's entire documented judged coffee record from the eligible field. Read 2026-10-07."
— FairWave Specialty Coffee Collective — own brands page, Oct 2026
"A verified negative, recorded because an absence is a search result and not a fact: the 2026 coffee category carries no Minnesota entry. Checked 2026-10-07 across the 2024–2026 cycles."
— Good Food Foundation — 2026 winners; Daily Coffee News, "13 coffee roasters win 2026 Good Food Awards", Jan 2026
"A second verified negative: the complete 30-competitor roster contains no Minnesota company. This is the basis for stating that the winner holds no competition record, rather than merely not having found one. Read in full 2026-10-07."
— Sprudge — 2026 U.S. Barista Championship competitor roster, Jan 2026
Key specialist signals: in-house roasting on the same premises as the cafe bar, documented in the venue's own words; a specialist-press visit by a named national writer, published 2019; named single-origin producers from Colombia, Ethiopia and Kenya on its own retail pages, plus a single-origin subscription programme; continuous operation under one owner-operator since 2010; and two Minneapolis addresses. Honesty notes, because they matter more than the signals: Dogwood holds no competition result of any kind, and a mandatory independent awards search returned none — Good Food Awards 2024 through 2026 and the 2026 U.S. Barista Championship roster were all checked directly; the specialist-press item is seven years old, which is why its dimension is scored at the floor of its band rather than the top; much of the assessment inside that piece is quoted from the owner rather than written by the journalist; no roasting machine or bar equipment is documented in our sources, so this page makes no equipment claim; the owner's name reaches us through reporting rather than a corporate filing, because the venue's own About page names no owner; and evidence scores measure documented evidence, not current sensory quality — we did not taste the coffee, and this page says so wherever the numbers appear.
Not confirmed, and not guessed. No source in our evidence set documents a roasting machine, espresso machine or grinder at this venue, so this page is handled honestly as "Equipment not confirmed" per the award template rather than filled in from a plausible assumption. What IS documented is the arrangement of the room: the venue's own page places its roastery "on the other side of the glass wall art installation across from the cafe bar" (captured 2026-10-07).
We do not earn commission on café equipment: professional bar machines are not sold through our affiliate programme, and nothing in this section is a product recommendation. If you want home equipment evaluated on the same evidence standard, see our Best Overall Espresso Machine award or Best Overall Burr Grinder award.
Captured and scored on evidence — the first winner in this programme for which that is true. The venue's own ordering system, with the store pinned to this address, lists oat and almond as milk options with no surcharge; the only milk carrying a price is breve, at $0.50, which is dairy. No house-made plant milk is documented, and no plant-milk policy statement appears on the menu in prose, which is why the dimension scores well rather than at the top of its band. Captured 2026-10-07; a cafe can change its milk pricing at any time, so check before you go.

No coffee shop is perfect, and no award page should pretend otherwise. We publish these honestly so you can make an informed decision.
Minnesota has a documented Good Food Awards record in coffee. All of it belongs to companies owned by a single multi-brand parent, which this award excludes at the ownership gate — so the city's entire judged coffee record was unavailable to this field, and no venue eligible for this award holds a cup-judged result of any kind. That is the single fairest criticism of this award and we would rather state it than have a reader discover it. This page therefore makes no claim that its winner makes the best coffee in Minneapolis. It claims that Dogwood carried the strongest documented evidence across six dimensions, four of which do not turn on judged coffee.
Coffee Quality is not the dimension that carried this award, and it is not the one the winner leads on. The strongest coffee-quality evidence anywhere in this city's eligible field — the only current independent press assessment, and the only national roasting championship — belongs to a business recognised below as an Honorable Mention, not to the winner. Dogwood took the award on breadth across six dimensions, four of which do not turn on judged coffee at all. A reader whose only question is who makes the best coffee in Minneapolis should treat that honourable mention as the better starting point, and should know that no eligible venue here holds a cup-judged result to settle the question.
The Coffee Quality score rests on a 2019 visit by a named national writer. Under our currency rule a seven-year-old assessment can never reach the reserved top of its band, and this one is placed at the band floor for a second reason: much of the assessment inside it is quoted from the owner rather than written by the journalist. The fresher evidence on this page — captured menu, captured milk policy, captured hours, verified current trading — keeps the venue eligible and current. It does not make the press assessment newer, and we do not pretend it does.
Every figure on this page rates the strength of documented evidence available for evaluation — not sensory quality. We did not visit, did not taste, and make no claim about what is in the cup today. We choose documented, repeatable, auditable evidence over unrepeatable impressions, and this disclosure is the cost of that choice. A reader who wants a tasting verdict should not use this award for that.
The venue's own About page names no owner. The owner-operator record behind the Barista & Ownership score therefore reaches us through reporting rather than a corporate filing, and we have not confirmed it against a Minnesota Secretary of State record. The independence finding is on firmer ground — it rests on reading the multi-brand parent's own brands page and finding this company absent — but the named-individual ownership claim is reporting, and it is labelled as such.
No source in our evidence set documents a roasting machine, espresso machine or grinder at this venue, and this page makes no equipment claim at all. What is documented is the arrangement of the room, in the venue's own words. Shop-provided documentation for CoffeeLab Verified status would resolve this firsthand.
Value is scored against a local band built from the four menus we could capture in this city: median drip $3.88, espresso $3.88, cappuccino $4.88, latte $5.58. Two of the six evaluated venues publish no capturable menu at all — no cafe page, no menu, no ordering surface — and carry a disclosed default on both menu dimensions rather than a guess. A missing figure is never treated as evidence against a venue. A four-menu band is a thin band, and a reader should weigh the Value dimension accordingly. Prices were captured on 2026-10-07 and a cafe can change them at any time.
Dan Anderson, who owns the winner, co-founded The Get Down Coffee Co. with Houston White, and opened the Dogwood roastery to help it start. The Get Down is a business we also looked at in this city, which makes this a relationship between the winner's owner and the field — and the reason to publish it here rather than leave a reader to come across it. No related-party exclusion was written into this award's pre-registration, and none was applied afterwards, because writing a rule once the result is in sight is worse than disclosing the relationship. We publish no assessment of that business, here or anywhere else on this page.
This award evaluates the designated Northeast location only; the East Lake cafe is a second Minneapolis address not covered, and St Paul and Bloomington sites are outside the geography. Six venues were Gate-0 eligible and evaluated. Five further Minneapolis candidates could not be resolved to a findable site, menu or ownership record by the time the field closed and were never scored — they are named in our research record and remain unscreened, not rejected. Our discovery method finds shops with a public evidence trail, and an excellent shop with no web footprint is invisible to it.
An adverse-signal search was run on 2026-10-07 (closed, closing, sold, new owner, lawsuit, labor, health inspection). It did not identify a substantiated finding affecting eligibility for this venue. Disclosed rather than hidden: the owner co-founded a second coffee business in this city, named under the conflict-of-interest disclosure below; a St Paul cafe and a forthcoming Mac-Groveland site sit outside the award geography; and there is a Winnipeg roasting partnership. One methodological trap this gate caught twice and which is worth publishing: two parked lookalike domains carrying the names of real Minneapolis coffee businesses served identical machine-written filler, and taken at face value either would have produced a false claim that a trading business had closed. A parked domain is evidence about a domain, not about a business. This is a statement about what a documented search found on that date, not a guarantee that nothing exists.

Open Status Warning: Operating status confirmed from the venue's own current published pages and its own ordering platform (captured 2026-10-07): the Northeast cafe at 1209 Tyler St NE Ste 150, Monday to Friday 7 AM–7 PM and Saturday to Sunday 8 AM–6 PM, alongside the East Lake cafe at 4021 East Lake Street, both trading with live menus. We did not independently visit. Always check current hours before visiting — coffee shop status can change. If this shop has closed, please contact us so we can update this page.
CoffeeLabAdvisor does not conduct in-person shop visits. The verdict is based on the venue's own published pages and ordering system captured on 2026-10-07, independent specialist and metro press, and mandatory independent competition-record searches — all of which returned no result for this venue. We did not taste the coffee and did not assess current barista technique. We did not confirm ownership from a Minnesota Secretary of State filing: the owner's name reaches us through reporting, because the venue's own About page names no owner, and that gap is published as a limitation rather than smoothed over. No equipment claim is made because none is documented. Five further Minneapolis candidates could not be resolved to a findable site, menu or ownership record and were never scored; the gap is published as a limitation above. No adverse health, legal or labor finding was identified in the sources we searched; that is a statement about a documented search on a specific date, not a guarantee. Dogwood Coffee has not shared formal documentation for CoffeeLab Verified status; shared documentation would resolve the ownership and equipment gaps firsthand.
Shops that share formal documentation confirming their equipment and sourcing claims (invoices, spec sheets, roaster agreements) carry the CoffeeLab Verified badge. Dogwood Coffee has not yet received one — shared documentation would confirm the equipment and roaster lineup firsthand.
Award recognition is not a verdict on any other shop. The following are recognised in their own right, for what we found in their favour.
Recognised for the coffee: the only current independent press assessment in the evaluated Minneapolis field, and a U.S. Coffee Roasting Champion overseeing the roast.
Recognised for sourcing and transparency: a certified B Corporation, among the first in coffee and in Minnesota, and a founding roaster member of a producer-owned green-coffee importing cooperative.
The winner is the candidate our documented-evidence screening selected for full scoring under the CoffeeLabAdvisor 2026 methodology, and the only candidate whose scorecard is published. Because no comparative scores are published, this award is not a quantitative ranking of the city and should not be read as one. An Honorable Mention is a recognition, not a placing: we do not rank the field, and nothing on this page should be read as an assessment of any business other than the winner.
