☕ Espresso Basics · 2026The removable handle-and-basket assembly that holds the coffee in an espresso machine — the part you dose, tamp, lock in and knock out for every single shot. What the pieces are called, what the basket types mean, and what actually fits what.
Written and reviewed by the CoffeeLabAdvisor editorial team · Published 1 September 2026
A portafilter (from the Italian for “filter holder”) is the handled assembly that carries the coffee in a semi-automatic espresso machine. You fill its metal filter basket with ground coffee, tamp it flat, and twist the assembly into the machine's group head, where it locks against a seal. The machine then pushes hot water through the coffee bed and out of the basket into your cup. Every part of an espresso workflow — dosing, tamping, locking in, knocking out the spent puck — happens around this one component.
Many machines ship with two basket types in the box — the Breville Barista Express box list reads “1 cup & 2cup Single & Dual Wall Filter Baskets” — and the difference matters more than any accessory you can buy:
Knowing which basket is in the portafilter is step zero of diagnosing any shot — our Barista Express troubleshooting guide is built around exactly that check.
The size is the basket diameter in millimetres, it is fixed by your machine, and it decides one practical thing: which baskets, tampers and accessories fit. Across the machines we have verified:
| Size | Machines we verified at this size |
|---|---|
| 58 mm | Gaggia Classic Evo Pro · Casabrews 5700 · Rancilio Silvia · Breville Dual Boiler · Lelit MaraX V2 · Rancilio Silvia Pro X · Lelit Bianca V3 · La Marzocco Linea Mini |
| 54 mm | Breville Bambino Plus · Breville Barista Express · Breville Barista Pro · Breville Bambino |
| 51 mm | De'Longhi La Specialista Arte |
| None | Bean-to-cup machines (Jura, De'Longhi Magnifica/Dinamica, Philips LatteGo) — internal brew unit, no portafilter |
The full machine-by-machine list, with the sources each size was checked against, is on our portafilter size chart.
You will also find pages arguing that one diameter extracts sweeter or more evenly than another. We have measured none of that, and this page makes no claim about it: for a buyer, the size is a compatibility fact, not a quality score.
These are real listings we verified against the live Amazon catalog on 2026-09-01 — each was checked for an active offer, and the fitment line under each card paraphrases that listing's own compatibility statement rather than our guess. Match the size to your machine first (the size chart has every machine we verified), and check the listing's model list against your exact machine before ordering.

It holds the filter basket containing the ground coffee, and locks into the machine's group head so hot water is pushed through the coffee under pressure. It is the removable part you dose, tamp and lock in for every shot — and the part you remove and knock out afterwards.
A single wall (non-pressurised) basket has open holes across its base, so the resistance the water meets comes entirely from your grind, dose and tamp. A dual wall (pressurised) basket adds a second wall with a small exit, which generates crema-like foam and is forgiving of grind and dose. Machines such as the Breville Barista Express ship with both types in two sizes — Breville's own box list reads "1 cup & 2cup Single & Dual Wall Filter Baskets".
A portafilter with no spouts and no base under the basket, so you can see the underside of the basket during the shot. It is a standard accessory rather than an exotic one — Breville sells its own, listed as "the Naked Portafilter" in 54 mm and 58 mm versions. It must match your machine's size like any other portafilter accessory.
The machines we have verified use 58 mm, 54 mm, 51 mm baskets, and bean-to-cup machines have no portafilter at all. The size is fixed by your machine — our portafilter size chart lists which machine uses which, with sources.
One that matches your machine's basket diameter AND whose listing names your model — the lug (ear) design varies between brands at the same size, which is why the listings above each carry the maker's own compatibility list. Find your size on our chart first, then check the listing's model list for your exact machine.
No. The portafilter locks into a group head machined for one diameter, so a different size will not seat. This also applies to baskets, tampers and dosing tools — every one of them is size-specific.
