☕ COFFEELAB VENUE AWARD 2026 — TULSA
Topeca Coffee — Downtown, 100 E 2nd St, Tulsa, OK 74103 · Open since 2002 · Topeca's own locations page (captured 2026-09-07) lists two Tulsa cafes: the Hyatt Shop — this award's subject — and the Vast Bank cafe, with roasting at Topeca's own Tulsa roastery on Admiral Boulevard. This award evaluates the designated Hyatt Shop location only; Topeca's other locations were not evaluated as part of this award.
This award is an evidence-led editorial selection under a disclosed methodology — not a tasting verdict — and it is conferred on the designated Tulsa venue operated by the evaluated coffee organization: organization-level evidence informs the award where it demonstrably represents the coffee program serving this venue, and historical competition results are never presented as a current sensory judgment of the venue's coffee. On that basis, Topeca Coffee — family-owned in Tulsa since 2002, on six documented generations of coffee farming — anchors this award at its Hyatt Shop cafe on the strongest verified judged record identified in our Tulsa evaluation: the 2018 U.S. Roaster Championship, WON by its then-Director of Coffee; a 5th-place finish at the 2020 U.S. Brewers Cup national finals by a then-staff competitor; and ranks 1 AND 2 at the 2018 El Salvador Cup of Excellence for the founding family's own farms, verified at the competition's own register — alongside a farm-to-cup chain stated on its own pages ("From our family's farms straight to your cup") and independently documented as recently as June 2026. Evidence scores measure the strength of documented evidence available for evaluation; they are not sensory scores, inspection scores, or direct measurements of current coffee quality. CoffeeLabAdvisor screened a qualified field of 27 candidates using its published coffee shop methodology; the winner is the candidate our documented-evidence screening selected for full scoring, and the only candidate carried through to a full six-dimension scorecard. We do not publish comparative scores for the rest of the field because we did not score the rest of the field.
100 E 2nd St, Tulsa, OK 74103 — the Hyatt Shop — Topeca's full-service daily downtown cafe at 2nd and Boston, tucked onto the side of the Hyatt Regency overlooking Bartlett Square, in the shop's own description. This award evaluates this location only; Topeca's Tulsa roasting happens at its own Admiral Boulevard roastery, disclosed as the production premises.
A verified farm-to-cup chain: coffee from the founding family's own El Salvador farms — farms that took ranks 1 and 2 at the 2018 Cup of Excellence — roasted at Topeca's own Tulsa roastery and served at its cafes. The judged pedigree (a 2018 national roasting title; a 2020 national Brewers Cup finals placement) belongs to the then-Topeca team members who earned it, never to the venue as a certification.
Our flagship city award. An editorial selection: the independent coffee shop in the city that our documented-evidence screening selected for full scoring, carried through to a six-dimension scorecard. The rest of the field is screened but not scored, so the award is not a ranking of the city. The award level (Gold/Silver/Bronze) is an absolute score on that shop against the published rubric, not a placing against other businesses. This is an evidence-led editorial award, not a blind tasting or citywide sensory ranking: we do not score every eligible shop, and no claim is made that a winner would defeat every other shop in its city in a head-to-head tasting.
Silver (85/100) — the tier follows the score: six equal-weighted dimensions totalling 507, averaging 84.50, rounded half up to 85 against a Gold threshold of 90. Every figure on this page is a documentary-evidence score, not a sensory rating, and every score cites its evidence band — with each underlying fact scoring exactly once: judged product and craft outcomes inform Coffee Quality, the family's verified estate chain informs Sourcing & Transparency, and the then-staff pedigree informs Barista & Ownership. Coffee Quality (90) sits at the hard ceiling of our band for older judged results (86–90): a WON 2018 U.S. Roaster Championship, Cup of Excellence ranks 1 and 2 in 2018 for the founding family's farms, and a 2020 national Brewers Cup 5th is the strongest judged file identified in this evaluation — and every element of it is 2018–2020, which is exactly why the band caps it at 90 despite a won national title. Sourcing & Transparency (88) reaches the own-materials ceiling on independent corroboration — the Cup of Excellence register credits the family's farms at the source of record, and a June 2026 third-party profile documents the vertical integration — held inside the band by the family-vs-company ownership distinction and the absence of a published transparency report. Barista & Ownership (88) rests on champion-grade then-staff pedigree and six documented family generations, held mid-band because the champion-era competitors have departed and no current-staff competition presence is verified. Operational Consistency (85) rests on 24 years of organizational continuity — Topeca the company, not this cafe's own tenure — and current verified operation, held down by a February 2026 downtown cafe closure, disclosed below. Plant-Based Milk and Value each carry the methodology's insufficient-evidence default of 78, disclosed below. A one-point change in any single dimension can move the displayed total between 84 and 85; the Silver tier and the selection are unaffected either way. Scoring below.
From our family's farms straight to your cup.
Three sanctioning-body results, each verified at its source and each dated: the 2018 U.S. Roaster Championship, WON in Seattle by Topeca's then-Director of Coffee; a 5th-place national finish at the 2020 U.S. Brewers Cup by a then-staff competitor; and — the rarest signal — ranks 1 AND 2 at the 2018 El Salvador Cup of Excellence (91.80 and 91.60) for the founding family's own farms, where the competition's register credits the family matriarch by name. It is the sole judged record of any kind identified in the evaluated field. Both champion-era competitors have since moved on: the titles belong to the people who earned them, and this award does not present them as a current competition credential of today's staff.
The farms belong to the founding FAMILY in El Salvador — six documented generations on the slopes of the Santa Ana volcano — not to the Tulsa operating company, and this page says so every time. What makes the chain unusual is that it is verifiable end to end: the family's farms carry source-of-record competition results, the shop's own pages state the chain plainly ("From our family's farms straight to your cup"), and a third-party trade profile independently documented the full farm–mill–import–roastery–cafe integration in June 2026.
The honest question about a 2018–2020 judged record is what still connects it to this cafe in 2026. What IS documented as continuous: the family sourcing chain (stated on the shop's current pages and independently repeated in June 2026), roasting at the same Tulsa roastery, and family ownership itself. What is NOT documented: personnel continuity — the champion-era competitors have departed, current bar leadership is unverified, and our equipment record is a decade old. We do not manufacture continuity we cannot show. Current verified operation keeps the organization and venue eligible and operationally current; it does not refresh the age of the historical judged results, and we do not pretend otherwise.
This award's claim is precise: among the independently owned Tulsa-area coffee shops we screened, Topeca was selected for full scoring on the documented signals this methodology treats as relevant to a serious coffee program — sanctioned judged results, a documented sourcing and roasting chain, sustained operation, supported by the shop's own published locations and hours (captured 2026-09-07). It is not a claim that any other shop's coffee is inferior, and popularity metrics — review volume, reader polls — are recorded and score nothing anywhere in this evaluation.
Each score rates the strength of the publicly documented evidence we found for that dimension — not first-hand testing. We did not visit this shop or taste its coffee. That is our standard evaluation tier, defined in the methodology; hands-on assessment belongs to CoffeeLab Verified, which this shop has not undertaken.
Overall: 85/100 — Silver. "Coffee Shop of the Year" names the candidate our documented evidence and specialist-signal screening selected for full scoring — it is an editorial selection, not the output of scoring every shop in the city against each other. Silver reflects the absolute-rubric score for that candidate. Scored on six equal-weighted dimensions per our venue awards methodology. An evidence score does not represent a current sensory rating; it reflects the strength, independence and recency of the documentation available under this programme's rubric.
What Operational Consistency measures: sustained operation and a stable, documented offer over time — longevity, continuity at the awarded address, and documented continuity of operation over time. It is not a measurement of shot-to-shot consistency in the cup, which would require in-person testing we do not perform.
† These dimensions could not be evidenced, so each carries the methodology's insufficient-evidence default of 78 rather than a measurement of this shop. Two of the six dimensions in this total are therefore a default, not a finding — stated here because the overall score depends on them. It is not a neutral figure: it is a substantive assumption that unknown equals 78, and the reasoning is published in our methodology.
Unlike general review aggregation, we grounded this in independent, named, checkable sources rather than anonymous review excerpts:
"The official register: rank 1 "La Cumbre" (91.80) and rank 2 "Finca El Manzano" (91.60), farmer credited as "MARGARITA LUCIA DIAZ DE LOPEZ" — the founding family's farms, at the competition's own site. Verified 2026-09-07."

Key specialist signals: the 2018 U.S. Roaster Championship title and 2020 U.S. Brewers Cup national 5th, both earned by then-Topeca team members and documented by Daily Coffee News; Cup of Excellence 2018 ranks 1 and 2 for the founding family's farms, verified at the competition's own register; Daily Coffee News features in 2015 and 2018; and a June 2026 third-party profile of the vertical integration. Honesty notes, because they matter more than the signals: every judged result is 2018–2020 and the competitors who earned them have departed; the freshest trade item about the company (April 2025) is a self-issued press release, which we do not count as editorial coverage; current bar equipment is unconfirmed; the shop's own awards page lists further medals and finalist appearances that we could not independently verify, so they are omitted rather than repeated; and evidence scores measure documented evidence, not current sensory quality — we did not taste the coffee, and this page says so wherever the numbers appear.
Current in-cafe equipment at the Hyatt Shop is not confirmed from public sources — our roastery documentation is 2015-dated and is treated as historical, so this page is handled honestly as "Equipment not confirmed" per the award template rather than guessed. What IS current: the shop's own locations page lists the cafe with daily hours, and its own pages state the farm-to-cup chain (captured 2026-09-07). If you're shopping for equipment inspired by a shop like this, see our best espresso machine guide or best burr grinder guide. We do not earn commission on cafe equipment: professional bar machines are not sold through our affiliate programme, and nothing in this section is a product recommendation.
We do not earn commission on café equipment: professional bar machines are not sold through our affiliate programme, and nothing in this section is a product recommendation. If you want home equipment evaluated on the same evidence standard, see our Best Overall Espresso Machine award or Best Overall Burr Grinder award.
Not independently evidenced. Review-level reports of oat offerings exist, but no shop-published menu could be captured — the shop's ordering system does not expose menu text to capture. How an unevidenced dimension is scored: it carries the methodology's insufficient-evidence default of 78 — an administrative value that prevents unsupported positive inference, not a representation of average performance, and not a measurement of this business. If evidence is captured the score can move in either direction, and the tier follows.
No coffee shop is perfect, and no award page should pretend otherwise. We publish these honestly so you can make an informed decision.
The strongest evidence behind this award — a won 2018 national roasting title, 2018 Cup of Excellence ranks 1 and 2, a 2020 national Brewers Cup 5th — is entirely 2018–2020, the competitors who earned the titles have since departed, and the award-winning farms belong to the founding family in El Salvador, not the Tulsa operating company. An award dated 2026 resting substantially on 2018–2020 evidence is the single fairest criticism of this award, and we would rather state it than have a reader discover it. The scores sit in the older-judged evidence band (hard-capped at 90) for exactly this reason; the freshest signals — current published hours, the current first-party sourcing statement, and June 2026 third-party documentation of the integration — keep the organization and venue eligible and current, and do not refresh the age of the judged results.
Every figure on this page rates the strength of documented evidence available for evaluation — not sensory quality. We did not visit, did not taste, and make no claim about what is in the cup today. We choose documented, repeatable, auditable evidence over unrepeatable impressions, and this disclosure is the cost of that choice. A reader who wants a tasting verdict should not use this award for that.
The awarded venue is the Hyatt Shop cafe. The Admiral Boulevard roastery is the production premises; the El Salvador farms are the sourcing origin; the historical champions are then-staff pedigree. These four categories are kept distinct everywhere on this page, and organization-level evidence is used only where it demonstrably represents the coffee program serving this cafe — the shop's own current pages state that its cafes serve coffee from the family's farms through its Tulsa roastery.
The current espresso machine and grinder lineup at the Hyatt Shop is not confirmed from public sources — our roastery documentation is 2015-dated and treated as historical — and this page makes no equipment claim. Shop-provided documentation for CoffeeLab Verified status would resolve this firsthand.
Review-level reports of oat offerings exist, but no shop-published menu could be captured. The dimension carries the methodology's insufficient-evidence default of 78 — an administrative value preventing unsupported positive inference, not a measurement of this business.
No published drink pricing could be located anywhere capturable. The Value dimension carries the insufficient-evidence default of 78 rather than a guess. If the shop publishes prices, or shares them, we will score the dimension and restate the total; the arithmetic and its sensitivity are published in our research record.
This award evaluates the designated Hyatt Shop location only; Topeca's other locations were not evaluated as part of this award. The field screened was the Tulsa metro's independent, coffee-led venues; our discovery method finds shops with a public evidence trail, and an excellent shop with no web footprint is invisible to it.
A Gate 2 adverse-signal search was run on 2026-09-07 (closures, lawsuits, labor disputes, ownership changes, health findings). It did not identify a substantiated finding affecting eligibility. Disclosed rather than hidden: the downtown Philcade cafe closed February 13, 2026 — a landlord-driven closure, documented in local news — and the champion-era competition talent has departed. No adverse health finding was identified in the sources searched. This is a statement about what a documented search found on that date, not a guarantee that nothing exists.

⚠️ Open Status Warning: Operating status confirmed from the shop's own current published pages (captured 2026-09-07): the Hyatt Shop at 100 E 2nd St, open daily 6:30 AM–5 PM, alongside the Vast Bank cafe, with roasting at Topeca's own Tulsa roastery. We did not independently visit. Always check current hours before visiting — coffee shop status can change. If this shop has closed, please contact us so we can update this page.
CoffeeLabAdvisor does not conduct in-person shop visits. The verdict is based on sanctioning-body competition records verified at their sources, independent specialist coverage, and the shop's own published statements, locations and hours. We did not taste the coffee and did not assess current barista technique. Plant-based milk and drink pricing could not be verified from published sources, and both dimensions carry the insufficient-evidence default rather than a guess. The shop's self-reported awards-page items were checked against independent records on 2026-09-07 and could not be confirmed, so they are omitted. No adverse health, legal or labor finding was identified in the sources we searched; that is a statement about a documented search, not a guarantee. Topeca Coffee has not yet shared formal documentation for CoffeeLab Verified status; shared documentation would resolve the equipment, menu and pricing gaps firsthand.
Shops that share formal documentation confirming their equipment and sourcing claims (invoices, spec sheets, roaster agreements) carry the CoffeeLab Verified badge. Topeca Coffee has not yet received one — shared documentation would confirm the equipment and roaster lineup firsthand.
Award recognition is not a verdict on any other shop. The following are recognised in their own right, for what we found in their favour.
Recognised for 22 years of founder-run, in-house roasting in a nationally documented landmark roastery — with named-estate sourcing and, since 2022, the founder's own Nicaraguan farm.
Recognised for a 2022 Specialty Coffee Association Best New Product finalist appearance — a product-innovation recognition, not a cup-judged result — and a nationally documented specialty-instant program from a Cherokee-owned shop.
The winner is the candidate our documented-evidence screening selected for full scoring under the CoffeeLabAdvisor 2026 methodology, and the only candidate scored. Because the rest of the field was not scored, this award is not a quantitative ranking of the city and should not be read as one. An Honorable Mention is a recognition, not a placing: we do not rank the shops we did not score, and nothing on this page should be read as an assessment of any business other than the winner.
