It depends which system you own, and the two are nothing alike. On an Original machine such as an Essenza Mini or Pixie, you enter descaling mode by holding both cup buttons together for five seconds. On a Vertuo, you need a sequence of button-holds and lever turns instead, and two of those steps must be completed within 45 seconds or the machine silently drops out — which is the single most common reason people conclude their Vertuo will not descale. Both use one packet of Nespresso solution in the tank, take roughly twenty minutes, and finish with a full tank of fresh water as a rinse. Nespresso's own interval is every three months or 300 capsules, whichever comes first.
The entry sequence is the whole difficulty. Original holds two buttons; Vertuo needs a lever sequence completed inside 45 seconds.
Nespresso descaling is not one procedure. Which one you need depends on whether you own a Vertuo machine or an Original one, and the two sequences have almost nothing in common.
Both take roughly twenty minutes. Nespresso's guides put the frequency at Nespresso recommends descaling every 3 months or 300 capsules (whichever comes first).
If you are not certain which system you own, the capsule tells you: Vertuo capsules are domed and barcoded; Original capsules are the small cylinders. The next section makes the difference concrete.
This matters more than the model name. Nespresso sells two incompatible capsule systems, and the descaling routine follows the system rather than the price of the machine.
Vertuo machines read a barcode on the rim of a domed capsule and spin it to brew. They have a lever or head that locks and unlocks, and that lever is part of the descaling sequence. The Next, the Pop and the older VertuoLine all work this way.
Original machines take the small cylindrical capsule and pump water through it under pressure. They typically have two cup buttons, and both of those buttons are the descaling control. The Essenza Mini and the Pixie are the common examples.
A machine can also tell you it wants descaling on its own. On the Vertuo Pop, Nespresso documents the alert precisely: Descaling is needed when the cup button blinks orange 3 times before steady white.

Fill the tank with one packet of Nespresso descaling solution and water, empty the capsule container and drip tray, and put a large container under the spout. Nespresso asks for a minimum 34 oz container on the Next and the Pop, which is larger than most mugs.
Then the sequence itself, which is where people come unstuck. With the head closed, you hold the button until the steady light goes off and starts blinking orange quickly — the guide notes this can take about seven seconds. You then turn the lever to lock and back to unlock, hold the button again until it blinks the same way, and lock the lever.
The trap is the timing. Nespresso states it plainly: Steps 5 and 6 must be completed within 45 seconds.
Miss that window and the machine quietly drops out of the sequence, which reads exactly like the mode being broken. It is not; you simply start again from the beginning.
Once the light is blinking orange quickly with the lever locked, you are in descaling mode. Press the button once and the machine works through the solution on its own. Nespresso gives the whole thing as a twenty-minute job, and on the Pop adds that it cannot be interrupted.
The Original line is considerably simpler, which is worth knowing if you have been applying Vertuo instructions to an Essenza Mini and wondering why nothing happens.
Fill the tank with one packet of solution and top up with water, eject any capsule, close the lever, empty the drip tray and capsule container, and put a receptacle under the outlet. Then the entry: Simultaneously press and hold both cup buttons for 5 seconds
and the cup lights blink quickly.
From there you press the large cup button to push the solution through, refill the tank with the used solution and run it again, then rinse with fresh water. Nespresso's Essenza Mini guide asks for the rinse to be repeated more than once specifically because that machine's tank is small — a detail that does not apply to larger Original machines.
Exiting uses the same control that entered it: hold both cup buttons again, and the blinking slows and settles. Nespresso puts the Original procedure at 15 to 20 minutes.
This is the part of the page where the maker's position and the most common internet advice genuinely disagree, so it is worth being exact about who says what.
Nespresso's descaling guides state that its machines should be descaled with a Nespresso descaling kit, and say that other solutions — naming vinegar and store-bought descalers — may cause damage to your Nespresso machine
. That is the manufacturer's own written position, and it is the one that governs your warranty conversation if you ever need to have one.
We are not in a position to tell you what vinegar does or does not do to a Nespresso pump, because we have not tested it and neither has anyone else who has published a method we would be willing to cite. What we can tell you is what the company that built the machine put in writing, which is the sentence above.
The guides also carry the handling warnings worth repeating: keep the solution away from children, do not swallow it, avoid contact with eyes and skin, and put something under the machine because a spill can discolour surfaces.
Every Nespresso guide on this page ends the same way, and the last step is the one most likely to be skipped because the machine already looks finished.
After the solution has run through, you discard it, rinse the tank thoroughly, refill with fresh water and run the whole volume through again. On the Vertuo Pop the machine stops by itself and the cup button becomes steady. Then you empty and rinse the capsule container and drip tray, wipe the machine down with a damp cloth, and — this is the step — let it rest for ten minutes before using it.
One more instruction that is easy to miss because it appears in the safety block rather than the steps: avoid filling the water tank during the descaling process. Topping it up mid-cycle is not part of any of these procedures.
Whether you are here because a machine finally gave up or because you are replacing one that still works, the decision is not really which Nespresso. It is which of the two Nespresso systems, because the capsules are not interchangeable and the one you pick is the one you keep buying.
Original takes the small cylindrical capsule and forces water through it under pressure. The drinks are espresso-sized. Its great advantage is that the capsule format is widely made by other companies, so there is real competition on price and a large choice of coffee.
Vertuo takes a domed capsule with a barcode on the rim, reads that barcode and spins the capsule to brew. One machine covers six sizes, from a single espresso up to an 18 oz mug, which is the thing Original cannot do. The trade is that the capsules are effectively Nespresso's own, so you are buying from one supplier for the life of the machine.
Put plainly: if you drink espresso and want choice in capsules, Original. If you want mugs of coffee as well as espresso from one machine, Vertuo. Descaling differs between the two as well, which is the subject of the rest of this page.

The Vertuo Pop+ is the compact entry. If a Vertuo is going into a small kitchen or a second room and you want the system rather than the extras, this is the one that costs least to get into it.

The Vertuo Next is the one most people should look at first. Its listing gives the full six sizes — 5, 8, 12 and 18 oz coffees plus single and double espressos, hot or over ice — in a body 5.5 inches wide, which is narrower than most kettles. A note on what is missing. The Original-line machines — Essenza Mini, Pixie, CitiZ, Inissia, Creatista, Lattissima — are not carded above because they do not come back from the licensed product API we verify every listing through, under any search we ran. That is a limit of what we can verify rather than a judgement on those machines, and it is why the system advice above is written to stand on its own: if Original is the right answer for you, buy an Original machine, most easily direct from Nespresso.
Everything above comes out of Nespresso's own descaling guides and the Vertuo Next user manual: sequences the manufacturer publishes for owners to carry out, using a solution the manufacturer sells for the purpose. All of it happens from the outside of the machine.
What you will not find here is anything involving opening the machine, reaching a pump, or forcing a jammed head. If a descale completes and the fault that brought you here is still there, that is the point at which the manufacturer's own documents tell you to call them, and this page agrees.

Start again from the beginning and move through the lock-unlock and button-hold pair briskly. The light should be blinking orange quickly with the lever locked.
Nespresso puts the Vertuo Next, VertuoLine and Vertuo Pop procedures at about 20 minutes, and the Original line machines such as the Essenza Mini and Pixie at 15 to 20 minutes. The Vertuo Pop guide adds that the cycle cannot be interrupted once started. Add ten minutes at the end, because every guide asks you to let the machine rest before using it.
