Nespresso sells two systems that share a name and nothing else. Original is the older line: a pump forces water through a small capsule and produces espresso and lungo. Its capsule shape has been widely copied, so third-party capsules fit it and the coffee choice is large. Vertuo is the newer line: a larger domed capsule carries a barcode the machine reads to set the brew, and it covers a much wider range of cup sizes from espresso up to a full mug. The capsules are not interchangeable in either direction, and a Vertuo machine takes Nespresso's capsules only. Choose Original for coffee choice and price; choose Vertuo for cup sizes and simplicity.
This is the thing to get right before you buy anything, because it is expensive to get wrong. A Vertuo capsule does not fit an Original machine and an Original capsule does not fit a Vertuo. They are different shapes, read differently, and sold separately.
Whichever line you buy, you are choosing a capsule supply for the life of the machine. That is a bigger decision than the machine itself, and it is why this page exists.
Original uses a pump to force hot water through a small capsule. That is conventional espresso extraction, and it produces the short concentrated shot the Original range is built around, with espresso and lungo as the two programmable sizes on machines like the Inissia.
Vertuo reads a barcode printed on the rim of the capsule and uses it to set the brew for that specific coffee. That is what lets one machine produce anything from an espresso to a large mug without you choosing a setting. The capsule decides, which is either the appeal or the objection depending on how much control you want.
The Original capsule shape has been copied for years, so supermarkets, roasters and specialty brands all sell capsules that fit an Original machine. That competition is real and it shows up in the price per capsule.
Vertuo's barcode makes copying far harder, so in practice a Vertuo machine runs on Nespresso's own capsules. The range is wide and the quality is consistent, and you are buying from one supplier at one supplier's prices for as long as you own it. If cost per cup over several years matters to you, this is the paragraph that decides the page.
