Find your model first, because the button combination is not the same on all of them. On a K-Express or K-Slim, start with the brewer powered off and hold the 8oz and 12oz buttons together for three seconds. On a K-Duo, hold CUPS and OZ for three seconds. A K-Elite has no descale mode at all — its guide runs the cycle through the hot water button at the largest brew size, and asks for a 30-minute stand plus at least twelve rinsing brews, which is why Keurig budgets about 45 minutes for it against roughly 20 for the others. Using the wrong combination is the usual reason owners decide descale mode is broken.

There is no single Keurig descaling procedure, and this is the reason most descaling attempts fail before any solution goes through the machine. The button combination that enters descale mode is different on different families, and on one popular model there is no combination at all.
The model name is on the front or the base of the machine. Match it below:

What you need is the same across all of them: a large ceramic mug, fresh water, Keurig descaling solution and a sink. Every guide says the same two things about the mug — do not use a paper cup, and make sure there is no pod in the holder.
Descaling is not housekeeping. In Keurig's guides it is preventative maintenance with a named consequence: Scale is nontoxic, but if left unattended it can hinder brewer performance.
The intervals differ slightly by model, and the difference is real rather than a typo. The K-Slim guide says You should descale your brewer every 3 months.
The K-Elite guide says You should descale your brewer every 3-6 months.
The K-Duo is the most specific, tying it to a symptom as well as a calendar: descale your brewer every 3 months or when the descale light comes on
and adding low coffee volume or slower performance as triggers.
All of them add the same caveat: depending on the mineral content of your water, calcium may build up faster and make descaling necessary more often. Hard water is the variable, and no calendar knows what comes out of your tap.
Pour the entire bottle of Keurig descaling solution into an empty reservoir, fill the empty bottle with water and pour that in too. No pod. Large mug on the drip tray.
With the brewer powered off but plugged in, hold the 8oz and 12oz buttons together for three seconds. The DESCALE light turns solid, which is how you know it worked. Then press the flashing brew button to run a cycle, pour the hot liquid into the sink, and keep going until the ADD WATER light comes on.
Then the rinse, which is the half people cut short. Empty the reservoir, rinse it, refill to the MAX line with fresh water, and run cycles again until the DESCALE notification turns off. The K-Express guide is explicit that the full procedure must be completed to clear that light — if the light is still on, the machine is telling you the job is not finished.
Keurig puts this at about twenty minutes.
The K-Duo descales the same way in principle, but it has a pod side and a carafe side and both need doing. Begin plugged in and powered off, with the solution and an equal bottle of water in the reservoir, a large mug on the drip tray and the carafe on its heating plate.
Hold CUPS and OZ together for three seconds to enter the mode. Press the flashing BREW button for the single-serve descale cycle; when that finishes, press it again for the carafe side. Keurig notes that the carafe descale is only a partial brew, so a short cycle there is expected rather than a fault.
The fresh water rinse then repeats that pattern: two single-serve rinses and a carafe rinse that empties the reservoir. Do not stop after the pod side.
If you have been hunting for the K-Elite's descale mode, stop — its guide does not have one. The machine stays on and you drive the cycle manually, which is why this procedure looks so different from the others.
Empty the reservoir and, if you use one, remove the water filter and set it aside. Power off, pour in the solution and a bottle of water, power back on. Then run a rinsing brew using the hot water button at the largest brew size, and repeat until the add water light is lit.
Now the step that makes this the longest procedure here: Let the brewer stand for at least 30 minutes while still on.
After that, discard what is left, rinse the reservoir, refill with fresh water, and rinse in earnest — Repeat brew process until you have completed at least 12 rinsing brews using the largest brew size.
You will probably need to refill once during that.
Keurig's own estimate: Please allow approximately 45 minutes for the descaling procedure.
More than twice the K-Express. Start it when you have the afternoon, not before work.
It is one of the most common things people search for on this subject, so it deserves a straight answer rather than a shrug.
Keurig's Use and Care Guides specify Keurig descaling solution by name in the list of what you need, and the instructions are written around a bottle of it. None of the four guides behind this page gives a vinegar procedure or a vinegar quantity.
That is not the same as a prohibition, and we are not going to dress it up as one. What we can say is that the manufacturer documents one method, that method uses its own product, and if you ever need to raise a fault under warranty the conversation will be about the documented method. Plenty of people descale with vinegar. The company that built the machine does not publish that as the way to do it, and we are not in a position to publish a procedure no maker stands behind.
One practical note if you do use anything other than the named solution: the rinse matters more, not less. Vinegar's smell survives a light rinse, and every guide here already asks for a full tank of fresh water afterwards.
This alarms people and it is documented behaviour, so it is worth knowing before it happens.
Keurig's guides note that the cleaning action of the solution may produce foam, which is the solution reacting with the scale. On a heavily scaled brewer they go further: the machine may not fill properly after the descaler is added, and you may see little or no output followed by the sound of air blowing out.
The documented response is to turn off and unplug the brewer, discard the solution, rinse the reservoir thoroughly and refill with water, then plug in, power on and repeat the fresh water rinse. If it persists, the guides say to let the brewer sit unplugged for at least 30 minutes before continuing with the rinse.
Note what that instruction implies: the machine is not broken, it is blocked, and the fix is more rinsing rather than more descaler.
Descaling deals with what your water leaves behind. It does nothing about what your coffee leaves behind, and the guides treat those as separate jobs.
For coffee residue, the guides point at the pod holder, the funnel and the needles. Their instruction for grounds in the cup is specific: Grounds may have gathered in the exit or entrance needles
and can be cleaned with a straightened paper clip. The entrance needle has two holes on the underside of the lid; the exit needle sits inside the bottom of the pod holder. After doing the needles, the guides say to run two water-only cycles.
Rinse pods are the low-effort version of the same job — they run through the pod holder like a normal pod and deal with flavour carry-over. They are not a descaler and will not clear the descale light. Keurig's own maintenance kit bundles both, which is a fair indication that the company considers them different tasks.
The water filter is the third item, and the one most owners forget. Changing it does not replace descaling either; it reduces what arrives in the first place.

The consumable most owners forget exists. Listing states 12 charcoal filters each lasting about 2 months, compatible with K-Mini, K-Supreme, K-Slim, K-Express, K-Classic, K-Duo, K-Duo Hot & Iced, K-Elite, K-Select, K-Cafe, K-Compact and all Keurig 1.0 and 2.0 brewers, and not compatible with Cuisinart machines.

Keurig's guides say every three months for most models, though the K-Elite guide widens that to every three to six months and the K-Duo ties it to the descale light coming on, or to low coffee volume or slower performance. All of them add that hard water builds scale faster and may make descaling necessary more often.
Keurig's Use and Care Guides name Keurig descaling solution in the materials list and give no vinegar procedure or quantity. That is not an explicit ban, but the manufacturer documents one method using its own product, and any warranty conversation will be about that method. If you do use something else, rinse thoroughly: every guide already asks for a full tank of fresh water afterwards.
Almost always because the procedure was not completed. The K-Express guide states that the full descaling procedure must be completed to turn off the descale light, and the cycle does not end when the solution has run through: you then empty the reservoir, refill with fresh water and keep running cycles until the notification clears. Stopping at the solution stage leaves the light on.
About 20 minutes on a K-Express, and Keurig's K-Elite guide asks for approximately 45 minutes. The K-Elite is longer because it includes a 30-minute stand with the machine on, and then at least 12 rinsing brews at the largest brew size. Check your own model's figure before starting rather than assuming they are alike.
