16 oz of white vinegar, water to the line, press CLEAN and leave it about an hour. Each Ninja family's steps from its guide, plus CLn, CLOG and the clean light.

8 facts, each with a source below 6 questions answered 4 verified products

Fill the reservoir to the Travel Mug line (16 oz) with white vinegar, top it up with water to the Max line, put the empty carafe under the basket and press CLEAN. On the DualBrew and Pods & Grounds machines, press CLEAN and then the brew button. The cycle pauses and restarts on its own and takes about an hour, or about 75 minutes on DualBrew and single-serve models. Do not remove the carafe. When it finishes it beeps, shows End and the CLEAN light goes off. Then wash the reservoir and run one full Classic brew with water only. A commercial coffee-maker descaler works in place of vinegar.

The clean cycle in Ninja's guides. The carafe stays in place for the whole cycle, and plain water alone does not descale.

What the CLEAN light means

On a Ninja coffee maker, the clean cycle is a descaling cycle. Ninja's CM400 guide says the CLEAN button lights when a cleaning cycle is recommended for your unit, as calcium scale buildup could be affecting the flavor of your coffee. On the DualBrew and Pods & Grounds machines it is an orange Intelligent Clean Cycle Indicator.

Hard water brings it on sooner. Ninja's guides say hard water builds scale faster and the brewer will ask for cleaning more often; none of the guides we read has a water-hardness setting.

The light resets itself. When a clean cycle completes, it goes off; there is no button combination to clear it without cleaning. If it comes back on soon after, Ninja's troubleshooting tables say you may need a second cycle to remove more of the build-up.

Drip machines: CE251, CM371 and CM401

From the CM400 guide, which the CM360/CM371 guide follows almost word for word:

  1. Select the Full Carafe size and set the empty carafe under the brew basket.
  2. Fill the water reservoir to the Travel Mug line (16 oz.) with white vinegar, then fill the rest of the reservoir with water up to, but not exceeding, the Max Fill line. Or use a coffee-maker descaling solution, following its package. Ninja asks for white vinegar only, not other kinds.
  3. Press CLEAN. The machine delivers a little solution, pauses, and continues; the guide gives about 60 minutes on the CM401.
  4. Leave it. The guide is emphatic: DO NOT remove the carafe at any time throughout the clean cycle.
  5. When it beeps, shows End and the CLEAN light goes off, wash the reservoir in warm soapy water, then run a Full Carafe Classic brew with water only and discard it.

CE251. The Fresh Brew has a clean function you can run whenever you like; its guide suggests running it when a full carafe starts taking longer than 12 to 15 minutes. Make sure Small Batch is off, add 16 oz of white vinegar and fill with water to the 12-cup line (60 fl oz), then press CLEAN. Its guide gives about 25 to 35 minutes, then a 12-cup Classic brew with water only.

DualBrew and Pods & Grounds: one cycle per mode

The DualBrew machines clean each mode separately. The CFP300 guide says Each mode that you use will eventually need to be cleaned with a clean cycle. When the indicator first lights, clean the mode you use most; the next time, clean the other. If you use Hot Water mode at all, give it its own cycle too.

The solution is the same: 16 oz of white vinegar to the Travel Mug line, water to the Full line. Press CLEAN, then START BREW to confirm; it takes about 75 minutes. Afterwards, flush with a Full Carafe Classic brew for Grounds, a 12 oz Classic brew for Pods, or a Full Carafe on Boil for Hot Water.

Pods & Grounds single-serve (PB051). You need a vessel that holds at least 56 oz, such as a 2-quart bowl, under the spout. Ninja's US FAQ fills the reservoir to the CLEAN line with white vinegar or descaling solution, then to MAX with water; press CLEAN, then BREW. The cycle takes 75 minutes; flush afterwards with a 24 oz Classic water-only brew.

CFN601. The grounds side cleans like a DualBrew, started with the Grounds button then CLEAN. The capsule side has its own cycle, which Ninja's Canadian guide says can take up to 2 hours; run it when capsules start taking noticeably longer to brew.

CLn, CLOG and a machine that stops mid-brew

If the clock shows CLn (CM401, DualBrew, CFN601) or CLOG (CM371), Ninja's guides say there is heavy scale build-up on the heater and you need to run a clean cycle before brewing again. On the DualBrew, ignoring the orange indicator long enough can stop the machine mid-brew with CLn.

Two things the guides are clear on. Running a water-only clean cycle will not descale the brewer properly. And cancelling a cycle partway leaves the machine not properly descaled, so if you do cancel, still wash the reservoir and run the water-only flush to clear the vinegar out.

Weekly cleaning and the dishwasher

Ninja's guides ask for the system to be cleaned weekly, and the reservoir washed weekly. On the CM401, the glass carafe, brew-through lid, permanent filter, filter holder, water reservoir, flip-top lid, frother whisk and scoop are dishwasher safe; on the DualBrew Pro, the sliding lid and the pod adapter are not. Rinse the frother whisk after every use. Do not use a wire brush on the carafe.

Overflowing basket. Usually coffee ground too fine or too much of it; Ninja recommends medium grind. Do not use the permanent filter and a paper filter together: the CM400 guide says Using both the permanent filter and a paper filter can cause grounds to clog and water to back up in the brew basket.

Pod side brewing short or sputtering. The Pods & Grounds guide says grounds can build up in the top needle and clears it with a flat wire or a paper clip. The needle is sharp: unplug the machine first.

If a leak comes from the bottom of the machine, Ninja's guide says to call its customer service rather than open it. Choosing a new machine? See which Ninja coffee maker to buy.

Frequently asked questions

How do I clean my Ninja coffee maker with vinegar?

Fill the reservoir to the Travel Mug line (16 oz) with white vinegar, add water to the Max or Full line, put the empty carafe in place and press CLEAN, then START BREW or BREW on DualBrew and single-serve models. Leave the carafe in place for the whole cycle. When the CLEAN light goes off, wash the reservoir and run one full Classic brew with water only.

How long does the Ninja clean cycle take?

About 60 minutes on the Specialty CM401, about 75 minutes on the DualBrew and Pods & Grounds machines, and about 25 to 35 minutes on the Fresh Brew CE251, per Ninja's guides. The capsule side of the CFN601 can take up to 2 hours.

How do I reset the clean light on my Ninja coffee maker?

Run a clean cycle to the end. Ninja's guides say the CLEAN light turns off when a cycle completes; none we read gives a way to clear it otherwise. If it comes back on soon, run a second cycle.

What does CLn mean on a Ninja coffee maker?

Heavy scale build-up on the heater. Ninja's guides say to run a clean cycle before brewing again. The Hot & Iced XL CM371 shows CLOG for the same thing.

Can I use descaler instead of vinegar in a Ninja?

Yes. Ninja's guides accept a descaling solution specifically formulated for coffee makers, used as its package directs, as an alternative to white vinegar. Plain water alone will not descale the machine.

How often should I clean my Ninja coffee maker?

Run a clean cycle when the CLEAN light comes on, which happens sooner with hard water. Ninja's guides also ask for the system to be cleaned weekly. Its warranty excludes failure to run regular cleaning cycles.
