Keurig Not Working: The Checks Keurig Lists, in the Order It Lists Them
No power, a partial cup, or nothing at all. The documented causes from four Keurig Use and Care Guides, including the auto-off almost nobody checks first.
8 facts, each with a source below5 questions answered3 verified products
Check three things before anything else, in this order. Is the power button on; has the machine turned itself off; and is there enough water in the reservoir. The second one accounts for a great many apparently dead Keurigs — the guides state an energy-saving auto-off five minutes after the last brew, so a dark machine after breakfast is behaving normally. The third has a number attached that surprises people: Keurig states a minimum of 6 oz of water is required to brew at all. If it still will not start, the guides ask for the brewer to be on its own grounded outlet, because an overloaded circuit shared with other appliances is a documented cause rather than a theoretical one.
Keurig's own order for a dark machine. Step two accounts for a large share of brewers that appear dead and are not.
Start here: the sixty-second check
If your Keurig has stopped doing something it used to do, there is a good chance you are a minute away from fixing it. We read the troubleshooting sections in Keurig's Use and Care Guides for the K-Slim, K-Express, K-Elite and K-Duo Essentials Gen 2, and the same small set of causes accounts for most of what they list.
Three things, in this order: is the power button on, has the machine turned itself off, and is there enough water in the reservoir. That last one has a number attached, which we will come to, and it is higher than people assume.
Everything on this page is done from outside the machine. Nothing here asks you to open anything.
No power, or it keeps shutting off
The guides group these together under the heading Brewer Does Not Have Power or Shuts Off, and the order of their answers is worth following exactly, because the second one explains a lot of apparently dead machines.
First, check the power button is on. Obvious, listed first, and listed first for a reason.
Second — and this is the one: the machine may have turned itself off on purpose. Keurig states that For energy savings, the brewer automatically turns off 5 minutes after the last brew. and tells you to press the power button to restart. A brewer that is dark half an hour after breakfast is not broken; it is doing what it was designed to do. The K-Classic, by contrast, describes an auto-off programmable to two hours, so the timing varies by model.
Third, the electrical supply, and Keurig is specific here in a way most appliance manuals are not: Plug brewer into its own grounded outlet. and If the electric circuit is overloaded with other appliances, your brewer may not function properly. The guides go on to say The brewer should be operated on its own circuit, separate from other appliances. A kettle, a toaster and a Keurig on one kitchen circuit is a real cause of intermittent behaviour, not a theoretical one.
If all three are right and there is still nothing, the guides say to contact customer service. So does this page.
It powers on but will not brew
Here the cause is usually water or the handle, and the water figure is the one that surprises people.
Keurig states a floor: A minimum of 6oz of water is required to brew. The documented remedy is to add another 2 oz to make sure that minimum has been met, press the brew button, and repeat until the brewer starts dispensing. A reservoir that looks like it has coffee in it can sit under that line.
The other listed causes are mechanical and quick. Make sure the handle is pushed down securely after placing the pod. If the add water light is on, fill to but not beyond the MAX FILL line, and check the reservoir is seated properly in its base — an unseated tank behaves like an empty one. The K-Duo guide adds that if the add water light stays lit after refilling, or if all the buttons blink simultaneously, that is the point to contact customer service: If all of the buttons blink simultaneously, contact Customer Service.
A partial cup, or grounds in the coffee
These two symptoms share a cause more often than not, and it is a blocked needle rather than anything serious.
On grounds, the guides are direct: Grounds may have gathered in the exit or entrance needles and the tool is a straightened paper clip. The entrance needle is on the underside of the lid, with two holes, reached by holding the handle up. The exit needle is inside the bottom of the pod holder, which lifts out. After either, lower the handle and run two water-only cycles with no pod.
For a partial cup the K-Slim guide gives a purge procedure worth knowing: power the brewer off, hold the brew button and the 12oz button together for five seconds until water starts dispensing, let it purge, discard it and press power to restart. Then, if it persists, clean the exit needle and the pod holder.
Descaling is on that list too, and the guide sets a limit on how many times it is reasonable to try: if you have repeated the descale procedure twice and it is still brewing a partial cup, contact customer service. That is a useful boundary — a third descale is not going to be the answer. Our descaling guide covers the procedure itself, which differs by model.
The consumable nobody remembers
Most of these machines take a charcoal water filter cartridge, and it is genuinely easy to own a Keurig for years without realising one is in there.
The filter does not fix faults, and changing it will not clear a descale light. What it does is reduce what arrives in the machine in the first place, which is the same mineral content that the guides blame for scale building faster in some households than others. Filter cartridges are sold in multipacks and typically rated around two months each.
One instruction that matters during maintenance: the K-Elite and K-Duo guides both say to remove the water filter and set it aside before descaling. Running descaling solution through a filter wastes the filter.
A word about which pods you use
If your machine started misbehaving after you switched pods, this is relevant — and if it did not, it is still worth knowing before you switch.
Keurig's warranty states that Only the use of Keurig® K-Cup® brand pods and accessories will guarantee the proper functioning and lifetime of your Keurig® brewer. and adds that damage or malfunction resulting from non-Keurig pods and accessories may not be covered by the warranty, or may result in a service fee if that use is determined to be the cause.
We are not telling you that third-party pods will break your machine, because we have not tested that and the sentence above does not claim it either. We are telling you what the warranty says, because it is the kind of thing worth reading before rather than after.
Where this page stops
There is a line this page does not cross. Everything above comes from Keurig's own Use and Care Guides: symptoms they list, causes they name and remedies they tell owners to carry out, all from the outside of the machine using a paper clip, a mug and a sink.
We publish no teardowns, no pump work and nothing involving the case coming off. Where the guides say to contact customer service, this page says the same. Two symptoms in particular are ours to hand over rather than to advise on: a machine that keeps cutting out once the circuit and the auto-off have been ruled out, and any water reaching the base of the unit.

Keurig's own bundle of the three things this page asks for. Listing states the kit contains 4 Keurig rinse pods, 1 descaling solution and 2 water filter cartridge refills, is compatible with Classic/1.0 and 2.0 K-Cup coffee makers, and says to use the descaling solution every 3 months to remove mineral deposits.

Runs through the pod holder and exit needle; not a descaler. Listing states a non-toxic, biodegradable cleaning pod compatible with Keurig 1.0 and 2.0 brewers, used by brewing one large cycle with the pod and then one large water-only cycle, and states plainly that it is an aftermarket product with no affiliation with or endorsement from the manufacturers named.

The consumable most owners forget exists. Listing states 12 charcoal filters each lasting about 2 months, compatible with K-Mini, K-Supreme, K-Slim, K-Express, K-Classic, K-Duo, K-Duo Hot & Iced, K-Elite, K-Select, K-Cafe, K-Compact and all Keurig 1.0 and 2.0 brewers, and not compatible with Cuisinart machines.
Check three things in Keurig's own order. Is the power button on; has the machine turned itself off, since Keurig states the brewer automatically turns off five minutes after the last brew to save energy; and is it on its own grounded outlet, because the guides state an overloaded circuit shared with other appliances can stop it working properly. If all three are right and it stays dark, the guides say to contact customer service.
Why is my Keurig only brewing a partial cup?
Usually a blocked exit needle. The K-Slim guide gives a purge first: power off, hold the brew button and 12oz button together for five seconds until water dispenses, let it purge, discard and restart. If it continues, clean the exit needle with a straightened paper clip and clean the pod holder. The guides also list descaling as a cause, and say that if two descale cycles have not fixed it, contact customer service.
How much water does a Keurig need to brew?
Keurig states that a minimum of 6 oz of water is required to brew. The documented remedy when a brewer will not start is to add another 2 oz to the reservoir to be sure that minimum is met, press the brew button, and repeat until it dispenses. Also check the reservoir is seated properly in its base, because an unseated tank behaves exactly like an empty one.
How do I reset a Keurig?
The Use and Care Guides behind this page do not document a reset button. What they do document is a purge on the K-Slim, holding the brew and 12oz buttons together for five seconds with the brewer powered off, and powering off and on again to clear the auto-off. Beyond that the guides move straight to contacting customer service rather than to any reset sequence.
Why does my Keurig keep shutting off?
Most likely by design. Keurig states an energy-saving auto-off five minutes after the last brew on models including the K-Slim and K-Express, and the K-Classic describes an auto-off programmable to two hours idle. If it is cutting out mid-brew rather than sitting down afterwards, the guides point at the electrical circuit and ask for the brewer to be on its own outlet, separate from other appliances.
