A Jura is maintained by consumables and prompts, not by a calendar. The machine asks for each job when it is due, and there are three: rinse and clean the milk system, which JURA says to do daily whenever you have prepared milk; run the cleaning programme with a JURA cleaning tablet, one tablet per cycle, when the machine calls for it; and change the CLEARYL filter cartridge when prompted. The filter is the part that changes everything else — while a CLEARYL cartridge is fitted and in date, JURA states that descaling is unnecessary.

Three jobs, and the machine names them
Jura's maintenance model is different from most espresso machines, and it is worth understanding before you buy consumables. You are not expected to keep a schedule. The machine counts what it has done and asks, and the whole job is to answer when it asks — with the right product.
- Milk system. Daily, whenever milk has been prepared. This is the one with a real deadline, for reasons below.
- Cleaning programme. When prompted, with one JURA cleaning tablet per cycle. The tablets remove the oil build-up that accumulates on the brew side.
- Filter change. When prompted. And while a CLEARYL cartridge is in use, JURA states descaling is unnecessary — the filter is doing that work.
The milk system, and why daily is not cautious
JURA's instruction is that the fine foam frother must be cleaned daily when you have been preparing milk, so that it keeps working properly. That is the maker being polite about a hygiene problem: milk residue in a warm, enclosed circuit is an ideal medium, and the consequence is not just a machine that froths badly.
The automatic cleaning programme and the JURA milk system cleaner are designed to work together — JURA says the cleaner removes milk fats and proteins, and to use only the original JURA milk system cleaner. The mini-tab form doses itself, which removes the commonest failure, which is guessing the quantity of a liquid.
The daily rinse the machine offers at switch-off is not a substitute for the cleaning cycle. It moves water through; it does not remove protein.
The CLEARYL filter, and what it replaces
This is the part that surprises people coming from other brands. JURA's position is that descaling is completely unnecessary while a CLEARYL cartridge is in use — the cartridge treats the water before it reaches the boiler, so scale does not form in the first place.
Two consequences follow, and both are financial as much as practical:
- The filter is not optional if you want to skip descaling. Let it lapse and scale starts forming again, and the machine will start asking to be descaled instead. The cartridge cost is the price of not descaling, not an extra on top of it.
- The cartridge has to be in date, not merely present. A spent filter in the tank is water treatment you are not getting.
Why JURA insists on its own products
JURA states that only original JURA maintenance products should be used. On the milk side this is chemistry — the cleaner is formulated for the fats and proteins in the specific circuit. On the filter side it is fit and metering: the machine counts filter cycles and expects a cartridge that behaves the way it assumes.
There are third-party cartridges and cleaners, visibly cheaper, and we stock generic descalers and milk cleaners for machines where they are appropriate. On a Jura they are not the thing the machine's own programme is written around, and on a machine at this price the saving is small against what it is protecting.
What the routine actually costs in time
The cleaning programme takes around 20 minutes, and it runs itself — the time is the machine's, not yours. The milk clean is a minute of your attention a day. The filter change is a minute every few months.
Set against that, a Jura is among the least demanding machines to own day to day, which is much of what the price buys. What it does not tolerate is being ignored: the consumables are not optional extras but the maintenance model itself, and a Jura run without them is a machine being run without maintenance at all.
CLEARYL is one of the two filters whose listing states that descaling is unnecessary while it is fitted — see espresso machine water filters for the condition attached to that.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to descale a Jura?
JURA states that descaling is unnecessary while a CLEARYL filter cartridge is in use — the cartridge treats the water so scale does not form. Run the machine without a current filter and descaling returns to the schedule.
How often should I clean a Jura milk system?
Daily, whenever you have prepared milk. JURA's instruction is that the fine foam frother must be cleaned daily so that it keeps working properly, and milk residue in a warm circuit is a hygiene issue as much as a performance one.
How long does the Jura cleaning programme take?
About 20 minutes, and it runs itself. One JURA cleaning tablet is used per cleaning cycle.
Can I use third-party cleaning tablets and filters in a Jura?
JURA says to use only original JURA maintenance products. The milk cleaner is formulated for that circuit, and the machine counts filter cycles expecting a cartridge that behaves as it assumes.
What does the daily rinse do?
It moves water through the system at switch-on or switch-off. It is not a substitute for the cleaning programme or the milk system clean — it does not remove milk protein or brew-side oils.
