Wait for the light, use EcoDecalk, and set aside half an hour you will not need the machine. De'Longhi machines ask for descaling themselves: the descale light comes on the display, and how soon depends entirely on your water hardness rather than a fixed number of cups. The cycle takes around 30 minutes on a Magnifica Evo and around 45 on a Magnifica S, and once started it cannot be interrupted — it has to run through to the end of the rinse. De'Longhi is unusually blunt about the solution: use the De'Longhi descaler only, because an unsuitable one can leave you with faults the guarantee does not cover.

The short answer

De'Longhi does not leave descaling to your judgement. The machine watches the water it has pushed through and turns on a descale light when it has had enough, and that is the signal to act on. There is no cup number to memorise: De'Longhi states the frequency depends on the hardness of the water in your area, so two identical machines in two towns will ask at different times.

Three things decide whether the job goes well:

Why it has to be their descaler

Most maintenance advice treats descaler as a commodity, and for many machines it broadly is. De'Longhi takes a harder line than that, and puts it in writing: use the De'Longhi descaler only, because using an unsuitable descaler, or descaling incorrectly, may result in faults not covered by the manufacturer's guarantee.

That is a warranty statement rather than a chemistry one, and it is the reason this page names EcoDecalk instead of the universal descalers we stock for other machines. On a machine still inside its guarantee the few dollars saved on a generic bottle is a poor trade against the cover you give up. If yours is long out of warranty the calculation is yours to make — but make it knowingly.

What the cycle actually involves

The exact button sequence differs by range, and De'Longhi says so itself — its own help centre asks you to identify your model from the control panel icons before it will show you the steps. So rather than print one sequence that would be wrong for most readers, here is the shape every De'Longhi descale cycle shares:

  1. Empty the drip tray and the grounds container, and take out the water filter if one is fitted. The cycle pushes a lot of liquid through and will fill the tray otherwise.
  2. Pour the descaler into the empty tank, then add water to the level the machine's own instructions give for descaling. EcoDecalk is supplied in single-use packs so the dose is decided for you.
  3. Put a container of at least a litre under the spouts — both the coffee spout and the hot water or steam wand, because the cycle uses both.
  4. Start the descale programme from the control panel and leave it alone. It will pause and resume by itself; the pauses are part of it, not a fault.
  5. Rinse when it asks. The machine will tell you to rinse the tank and refill with clean water, then run a rinse cycle. This is the step people skip, and it is the one that gets descaler out of the circuit.

Your own model's guide is on De'Longhi's help centre under its exact model code — the code is on the sticker underneath or behind the drip tray.

Why you cannot stop halfway

De'Longhi states that once the descaling cycle has begun it cannot be interrupted and must be concluded with the full rinse cycle. That is worth taking literally. A cycle abandoned partway leaves acid sitting in the boiler and the circuit, and the machine does not know it has been abandoned — it will offer to make coffee with descaler still in the lines.

If power is lost or the tank runs dry midway, do not brew. Refill, let the machine finish the programme if it offers to, and then run the rinse twice rather than once. The rinse costs water and nothing else.

How often, when the light is the only schedule

Because De'Longhi ties the prompt to water hardness rather than a cup count, the honest answer to how often is: when it asks, and that will be sooner in a hard-water area. If the light arrives much more often than you would expect, that is information about your water rather than a fault with the machine.

Two things change the interval. A water filter in the tank, where the model takes one, slows scale formation and pushes the prompt further out. And filtered or bottled water does the same thing without a cartridge, though it does not remove the need entirely — even soft water carries some mineral content, so the prompt still comes, later.

What happens if you keep ignoring it

Nothing dramatic at first, which is the problem. Scale is an insulator, so the first symptom is usually that the coffee is not as hot as it was, and that gets blamed on the cup or the milk. Then the flow slows as the passages narrow. On a machine with a heating element the element works harder to reach the same temperature, which is the failure that ends machines.

If your complaint is temperature rather than scale, check the simpler cause first: De'Longhi notes that if two to three minutes have passed since the last coffee the internal circuits have cooled, and a rinse cycle warms them again before you brew. Our De'Longhi problems guide works through that and the rest.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know my De'Longhi needs descaling?

The machine tells you: a descale light comes on the display. De'Longhi ties this to the hardness of your water rather than a fixed number of cups, so there is no schedule to keep — wait for the prompt.

How long does descaling a De'Longhi take?

De'Longhi gives around 30 minutes for a Magnifica Evo and around 45 minutes for a Magnifica S. Set the time aside before you start, because the cycle cannot be interrupted once it has begun.

Can I use vinegar or a generic descaler in a De'Longhi?

De'Longhi says to use the De'Longhi descaler only, and warns that an unsuitable descaler or descaling performed incorrectly may result in faults not covered by the manufacturer's guarantee. On a machine still under guarantee that is a strong argument for EcoDecalk.

What happens if the descaling cycle is interrupted?

De'Longhi states the cycle must be concluded with the full rinse. If it stops partway — power cut, empty tank — do not brew coffee. Refill, let it complete, and run the rinse twice before making anything.

Does a water filter mean I never have to descale?

No. A filter in the tank slows scale formation and pushes the prompt further out, and filtered or bottled water does the same, but neither removes the need. Even soft water carries some mineral content, so the descale light still arrives — later.
