Espresso Machine Water Filters: Which One Fits, and Which Replace Descaling

Filters are not interchangeable and two of them replace descaling outright. Which cartridge fits Breville, Philips, Jura, Keurig and Ninja.

8 facts, each with a source below 6 questions answered 6 verified products

Water filter cartridges are machine-specific, and two of them do something the others do not. Most charcoal filters improve the taste of the water and slow scale a little; you still descale on schedule. But Philips AquaClean and Jura CLEARYL are sold on a stronger claim — their listings state that descaling is unnecessary while the cartridge is maintained, in AquaClean’s case for up to 5,000 cups. That turns the filter from an accessory into part of the running cost, and it is the reason to get the right one rather than the cheapest one. Below: which cartridge fits which machine, and what each listing actually claims.

The mistake: assuming one Breville filter fits every Breville

Breville sells at least two different water filters and they are not alternatives. The BWF100 listing names the Barista Pro, Barista Express, Infuser and Duo-Temp Pro. The BES008 listing names the Oracle family and the Dual Boiler. Buying by brand rather than by model is how people end up with a cartridge that will not seat.

Check the model number on the underside of your machine against the compatibility list on the cartridge you are about to buy, every time. It is a two-minute check that prevents the most common returned purchase in this category.

The two filters that change your maintenance, not just your water

This is the part worth knowing before you choose a machine, not just a filter. Most charcoal cartridges are a taste-and-a-bit-of-scale proposition: you still descale.

Philips AquaClean is sold on more than that — its listing states a micro-porous filter that removes calcium and no descaling for up to 5,000 cups. Jura CLEARYL Smart+ states that descaling is unnecessary while a CLEARYL cartridge is in the machine. Both claims carry the same condition: they hold while the cartridge is replaced on schedule. Skip replacements and the scale arrives anyway, with the added irony that you were not descaling in the meantime.

If your machine does need descaling on a schedule, our guides cover the actual procedure for Breville, Nespresso and Keurig machines.

Is a filter worth it at all?

Two separate answers, and conflating them is why the question gets muddled.

For the machine, yes, if you live anywhere with hard water: scale is the main thing that kills espresso machines, and a cartridge that genuinely removes calcium is cheaper than a boiler. For the cup, it depends what is in your water to begin with — a charcoal filter removes chlorine, which is a real improvement if your supply is chlorinated and no improvement if it is not.

What a filter cannot do is make unsuitable water suitable. Filters reduce specific things; they do not rebuild water to a target composition.

Frequently asked questions

Do espresso machine water filters stop you having to descale?

Usually no, with two notable exceptions. Most charcoal cartridges improve taste and slow scale while you still descale on schedule. The Philips AquaClean listing states no descaling for up to 5,000 cups while the filter is maintained, and the Jura CLEARYL Smart+ listing states descaling is unnecessary while a cartridge is fitted.

Which water filter fits a Breville Barista Express?

The BWF100 charcoal filter. Its listing names the Barista Pro BES878, Barista Express BES870, Infuser BES840 and Duo-Temp Pro BES810. The Breville BES008 is a different filter for the Oracle and Dual Boiler families.

Are espresso machine water filters interchangeable between brands?

No. Cartridges are cut for a specific tank and machine family, and even within one brand there can be several that do not substitute for each other. Always check the model number against the listing.

How often should I replace a coffee machine water filter?

Follow the machine or the cartridge listing rather than a general rule, since the interval is set by capacity rather than time. Keurig’s charcoal filters are stated at roughly two months each; AquaClean is rated in cups rather than weeks.

Does a water filter improve the taste of espresso?

It can, if your water is chlorinated, because charcoal removes chlorine. If your water has no off-flavours to begin with, a filter protects the machine without changing the cup much.

Is a water filter worth it in a soft-water area?

Less so for scale protection, which is the main argument for one. It may still help the taste if your supply is chlorinated. The machine-protection case is strongest in hard-water areas.
