How to Descale a Casabrews Espresso Machine

Casabrews' own descaling steps for the CM5418, 5418 Pro, 3700, 5700 and Ultra: the 4-to-1 mix, the citric acid option and clearing the warning.

7 facts, each with a source below 6 questions answered 3 verified products

Find your model first, because Casabrews descales its machines in three different ways. On the compact CM5418 and 3700 Essential the machine flashes a warning after 500 brew cycles; you fill the tank with 4 parts water to 1 part descaling agent, or with citric acid at the ratio the manual gives, run it through, then run two tanks of clean water. The 5700 Gense wants a citric-acid descaler on a schedule set by your water hardness. The Ultra runs a guided programme of about 20 minutes that, once started, cannot be stopped. Every step below is taken from Casabrews' own manuals, model by model.

Which Casabrews do you have?

The model name is on the cover of your manual. Casabrews publishes its manuals on its own site, and the descaling section differs enough between them that the right one matters:

If you own a model not listed here, Casabrews' manual page carries its own instructions; follow those rather than borrowing a sequence from a different machine.

CM5418: the step-by-step

Casabrews states that after 500 brew cycles all indicator lights flash five times, and the warning returns at every start-up until you cancel it. The manual's sequence:

  1. Mix the solution in the tank: 4 parts water to 1 part descaling agent, filled to MAX. Casabrews says to use a household descaling agent and also to follow that product's own instructions; if you use plain citric acid instead, the ratio is 100 parts water to 3 parts citric acid.
  2. Run about 100 ml (3.4 oz): put a cup on the drip tray, press 2 CUP once, then switch the machine off and leave the solution inside for 5 minutes.
  3. Repeat that three more times.
  4. Rinse twice: repeat the process two more times with clean tap water only.
  5. Clear the warning: press and hold 1 CUP, 2 CUP and STEAM together for 3 seconds.

Step five is the one owners miss. If the lights still flash at start-up after a full descale, the warning simply has not been cancelled.

CM5418 Pro and 3700 Essential: the automatic versions

CM5418 Pro. Same warning after 500 brew cycles and the same 4-to-1 mix, but its manual gives a stronger citric acid ratio: 100 parts water to 5 parts citric acid. Hold 1 CUP and STEAM for 5 seconds and the descaling cycle runs for 17 minutes and stops by itself. Then empty the tank, rinse and refill it with clean water to MAX, press 2 CUP once, and repeat that two more times. Clear the warning by holding 1 CUP, 2 CUP and STEAM for 5 seconds.

3700 Essential. After 500 brew cycles the power button flashes five times, and the warning reappears at every start-up until a descaling cycle has run. Mix 4 to 1, or citric acid at 100 to 3, fill to MAX, put a cup on the drip tray and hold the double-shot and steam buttons together for 5 seconds. Casabrews says the cycle runs for 7 minutes and stops; repeat it until the solution runs out, then run two tanks of clean tap water.

5700 and Ultra: water hardness, menus and a cycle you cannot stop

5700 Gense. This is the one manual that sets the schedule by water hardness, and it includes a test strip to measure yours: every 6 months for soft water, every 3 for hard, every month for very hard. After 1000 cycles without descaling the indicators flash red. Casabrews says to use a commercial descaler on the basis of citric acid, or the citric acid granules supplied with the machine. Fill the tank to MAX with the prepared solution, put containers under the filter holder and the steam or hot water nozzle, switch on, hold HOT-WATER for 5 seconds and turn the steam control to STEAM. The cycle lasts about 15 minutes; repeat it with clean water.

5700 Pro. Casabrews recommends descaling at least once a month. Fill to MAX with water and descaler, put cups under the portafilter and the steam wand, then press MENU and use the DOSE dial to select DESCALE. When it finishes, refill with clean water and run DESCALE again as the rinse.

Ultra. Allow about 20 minutes, and if you have just used the machine, switch it off and let it cool for at least an hour first. Fill the tank to MAX with cold water and descaler and put a large cup under the brew head and steam wand. Hold One Cup and hot water for 5 seconds to enter descale mode; until you press hot water to begin, one press of the steam button backs out. Casabrews is explicit that once the process begins there is no way to exit until it is complete, even by switching off or unplugging. The display counts 01 to 05 for the descale and 06 to 08 for the flush; then empty the drip tray and refill the tank with clean water.

Which descaling solution to use

None of the Casabrews manuals we read names a branded descaler. The compact machines' manuals ask for a household descaling agent at 4 parts water to 1, or plain citric acid; the 5700 Gense manual asks specifically for one based on citric acid. A citric-acid descaler therefore fits every model on this page.

The Urnex Dezcal powder lists citric acid as its first ingredient on Urnex's own ingredient sheet, alongside sulfamic acid. The Lemi Shine set includes 100% food-grade citric acid powder, which is what the manuals' citric acid ratios are written for. Casabrews does sell its own descaling tablets on Amazon; the listing says to drop in one tablet and run a cleaning cycle, but does not state the active ingredient or give a dose per tank.

When you use a commercial descaler, the manuals tell you to follow that product's own instructions as well. And whatever you use, run the clean-water rinse in full.

Everyday cleaning between descales

The CM5418 manual sets out the routine that keeps the machine working between descales:

Our steam wand cleaning guide goes further on milk residue.

First use: the step people skip

For anyone who has just unboxed a CM5418, Casabrews' first-use steps include one that is easy to miss: remove the plug at the bottom of the water tank before filling it. Then fill to MAX, fit an empty basket in the portafilter, switch on and wait for the indicators to stop flashing, and run hot water from the steam wand for 8 seconds to prime the pump. Casabrews notes the pump may be noisy for about 20 seconds the first time while it releases air, and that this is normal.

Following the manual is also what keeps the warranty intact: the Ultra manual's warranty excludes damage caused by not following the user manual.

Frequently asked questions

How do I descale my Casabrews espresso machine?

Fill the tank to MAX with 4 parts water to 1 part descaling agent, run the solution through, then rinse with two tanks of clean water. How you run it depends on the model: in short bursts on the CM5418, a 17-minute automatic cycle on the 5418 Pro, a 7-minute cycle on the 3700 Essential, and a guided programme on the Ultra.

What descaling solution should I use in a Casabrews?

Casabrews' manuals ask for a household descaling agent or plain citric acid, and the 5700 Gense manual specifies a descaler based on citric acid. A citric-acid descaler fits every model. Casabrews also sells its own descaling tablets on Amazon, though the listing does not state the active ingredient.

How do I turn off the descaling light on a Casabrews CM5418?

Press and hold the 1 CUP, 2 CUP and STEAM buttons together for 3 seconds after the descale and rinse have finished. On the CM5418 Pro, hold the same three buttons for 5 seconds. Until you cancel it, the warning returns at every start-up.

How often should I descale a Casabrews?

The CM5418, 5418 Pro and 3700 Essential warn after 500 brew cycles. The 5700 Gense manual sets it by water hardness: every 6 months for soft water, 3 for hard, monthly for very hard. Casabrews recommends at least monthly on the 5700 Pro, and the Ultra shows an alert on its display.

Can I use vinegar to descale a Casabrews?

None of the Casabrews manuals we read mentions vinegar. They name a household descaling agent or citric acid, with exact ratios for citric acid, and the 5700 Gense asks for a citric-acid descaler. Following those instructions is the safer course: the Ultra manual's warranty terms exclude damage caused by not following the user manual.

How do I clean a Casabrews espresso machine?

Purge and wipe the steam wand after every use, wash the filter baskets in warm water, and run a cycle through the brew head with no portafilter fitted. Wipe the body with a damp sponge only. Casabrews says not to use alcohol or solvents, not to put parts in the dishwasher, and never to take the brew head apart.
