How to Clean a Cuisinart Coffee Maker: The CLEAN Button, Step by Step
One-third white vinegar, two-thirds water, then hold CLEAN. Each Cuisinart family's procedure from its own booklet, why the light stays on, and the filter.
8 facts, each with a source below6 questions answered5 verified products
Take out the charcoal water filter, fill the reservoir with one-third white vinegar and two-thirds water, then press and hold the CLEAN button until its light flashes. The machine beeps five times and shuts off when it is done. If the CLEAN light comes back on, repeat with fresh solution; when it stays off, run one full reservoir of plain cold water and put the filter back. That is the procedure in Cuisinart's PerfecTemp, Thermal and Coffee Center booklets. The Brew Central DCC-1200 uses a Self Clean button and the On switch, and single-serve models have their own descale buttons, below.
The drip-model cycle from Cuisinart's PerfecTemp booklet. The step most often missed is the first: take the charcoal filter out.
What the CLEAN light means
On a Cuisinart, the CLEAN light is a decalcifying reminder. Hard water leaves calcium deposits on the metal parts that heat the water, and the PerfecTemp booklet says the build-up affects both how the machine works and how the coffee tastes. When the light comes on, it is time to run the clean cycle; the DCC-3200 booklet says we recommend cleaning it whenever the CLEAN LED indicator lights up.
How often that happens depends on your water and how much you brew. Cuisinart's booklets give no fixed interval for the drip models; its single-serve and Coffee Center booklets suggest every three to six months.
None of the six booklets we read describes a separate way to reset the light. It goes off when a clean cycle has done its job.
PerfecTemp, Thermal and Coffee Center: hold CLEAN
This is the procedure in the booklets for the PerfecTemp 14-cup DCC-3200, the 12-cup thermal DCC-3400, the Thermal Classic DCC-1170 and the carafe side of the SS-21 Coffee Center:
Remove the charcoal water filter. The booklet is explicit: Before decalcifying your unit, remove the charcoal water filter from the water reservoir.
Fill the reservoir to capacity with one-third white vinegar and two-thirds water. Put the empty carafe in place.
Press and hold the CLEAN button. When the CLEAN light flashes, the machine is in clean mode; release the button. On the SS-21, turn the function knob to BREW first.
When the cycle finishes, five beeps sound and the machine shuts off.
If the CLEAN light comes on again, repeat with a fresh vinegar solution. Cuisinart notes one cycle is usually enough.
When the light stays off, run one full reservoir of fresh cold water to rinse, then put the charcoal filter back.
Brew Central DCC-1200: Self Clean, then On
The DCC-1200 works slightly differently. Its booklet says to fill the reservoir with the same one-third vinegar, two-thirds water mixture, press the Self Clean button, and when the self clean light glows, turn the machine on with the flip switch. The light shines steadily during the cycle; five beeps sound when it ends.
Turn the machine on again to check the light. If it still flashes, turn it off and repeat with fresh solution; if not, run one cycle of fresh cold water before brewing coffee. The booklet adds that pressing Self Clean cancels your other settings, and pressing it again restores them.
Single-serve models: SS-10 and the SS-21 pod side
SS-10. There is no CLEAN button; the display shows DE-SCALE when its sensors detect scale. Its booklet says For optimal performance, de-scale your coffeemaker every 3 to 6 months. Empty the reservoir, turn off the AUTO OFF and OFF TIME features, and with no capsule in the chamber fill it with 20 oz of white vinegar and 40 oz of water. Put a large mug on the drip tray and press and hold HOT WATER and RINSE together; discard each mugful and repeat until ADD WATER appears. Rinse the reservoir, fill it with fresh water and run Hot Water cycles until ADD WATER appears again, and more if you can still taste vinegar.
SS-21 pod side. It is descaled separately from the carafe side. When the POD and OVER ICE lights flash as you press POD, it is due. Remove the charcoal filter, use 13 oz of white vinegar and 26 oz of water with a 16 oz ceramic mug (never a paper cup), and press and hold POD and OVER ICE for 2 seconds. Repeat until ADD WATER appears, then run three cycles with fresh water to clear the vinegar taste.
The charcoal filter, and what goes in the dishwasher
Every Cuisinart booklet we read gives the same filter interval: We recommend changing the water filter every 60 days or after 60 uses, and more often if you have hard water. A new filter is soaked in cold water for 15 minutes before it goes in, per the PerfecTemp booklet.
Dishwasher-safe on the drip models: the filter basket (upper rack) and the carafe and lid (upper rack only). On the pod models: the drip tray and its plate, the capsule holder on a low-temperature top-rack cycle, and the funnel. The SS-10 booklet says the reservoir and its lid must not go in the dishwasher.
Never immerse the base, and do not use scouring pads or harsh cleansers on any part. The PerfecTemp booklet also advises against drying the inside of the reservoir with a cloth, which can leave lint.
Overflowing, slow or still blinking
Basket overflows. Too much coffee or too fine a grind; the Thermal Classic booklet caps it at 15 tablespoons. Do not use a paper filter inside the gold-tone filter: the SS-21 booklet says Make sure the paper filter is not used with gold-tone filter. Taking the carafe out for more than about 20 seconds mid-brew can also overflow the basket.
CLEAN light still on after cleaning. Repeat the cycle with fresh solution until it stays off, as the booklets direct.
Slow brew, short pod cup or sputtering. On pod models the piercing or exit needle may be clogged with grounds; the booklets clear it with a paper clip. The needles are sharp, so unplug the machine and keep fingers out of the brewing chamber. If a pot is slow on a drip model, decalcify.
Machine will not brew. The SS-21 booklet suggests unplugging for at least a minute, then checking the reservoir is full and seated and the brew head fully closed.
Cuisinart does not publish its Grind & Brew DGB-400 booklet with its Amazon listing, so we do not give its grinder-cleaning steps here; use the booklet in the box. Choosing a machine instead? See which Cuisinart coffee maker to buy.

How do I clean my Cuisinart coffee maker with the CLEAN button?
Remove the charcoal water filter, fill the reservoir with one-third white vinegar and two-thirds water, then press and hold CLEAN until its light flashes and release. It beeps five times and shuts off when done. Repeat if the light comes back on, then run a full reservoir of plain water and refit the filter.
What is the vinegar to water ratio for a Cuisinart coffee maker?
One-third white vinegar to two-thirds water, filled to the reservoir's capacity, on the drip models. The pod booklets give fixed amounts in the same proportion: 20 oz of vinegar with 40 oz of water on the SS-10, 13 oz with 26 oz on the SS-21's pod side.
Why is the CLEAN light still on after I cleaned my Cuisinart?
Cuisinart's booklets say the light stays on when calcium is still interfering, and the answer is to repeat the cycle with a fresh vinegar solution until it stays off. The booklets we read describe no separate reset.
How often should I clean a Cuisinart coffee maker?
When the CLEAN light comes on, on the drip models. Cuisinart's single-serve and Coffee Center booklets suggest every three to six months, more often in hard water. Change the charcoal water filter every 60 days or 60 uses.
Can I use descaler instead of vinegar in a Cuisinart?
The Cuisinart booklets we read use white vinegar and do not mention commercial descalers either way. If you choose one, follow its own directions, and run plain-water cycles afterwards.
Is the Cuisinart carafe dishwasher safe?
Yes, on the upper rack only, per the drip-model booklets, as are the lid and the filter basket. The pod models' reservoirs are not.
