Philips LatteGo Cleaning and Descaling, Step by Step

The two-part carafe that goes in the dishwasher, the Calc/Clean light, and why AquaClean postpones descaling but never cancels it.

The milk carafe is the easy part and the descale prompt is the one people get wrong. LatteGo has no internal tubes: separate its two parts after each use and put them in the dishwasher, or rinse under lukewarm water. For descaling, wait for the Calc/Clean light, then take the LatteGo off the machine and the AquaClean filter out of the tank before you start — both must come out. Empty the tank, pour in the whole bottle of Philips descaler, and do not interrupt the cycle: it can take up to 30 minutes. An AquaClean filter postpones descaling but does not abolish it — after eight filter cycles you still have to descale.

The carafe: why this one is genuinely easy

LatteGo is the part of these machines worth buying them for, and the reason is what it does not have. There are no internal tubes — the system is two parts that come apart, so there is no narrow pipe with milk drying inside it and no cleaning cycle needed to push cleaner through one.

The routine is correspondingly short. After each use, separate the two parts and either put them in the dishwasher — Philips states LatteGo is dishwasher safe — or rinse them under running lukewarm water with a little dish soap.

That after-each-use matters more than the method. Milk left in any carafe overnight is a hygiene problem regardless of how easy the carafe is to take apart.

The Calc/Clean light, and the two things to remove first

Philips machines ask for descaling with the Calc/Clean light. When it is on steadily, it is time — descaling maintains coffee temperature and taste as much as it protects the machine.

Two things have to come out before the cycle starts, and this is where the procedure goes wrong most often:

Then empty the tank and pour in the entire bottle of Philips descaler before topping up with water to the level the machine asks for.

Do not interrupt it

Philips is explicit: do not interrupt the descaling process once it has started, and it can take up up to 30 minutes. Plan for that before you begin rather than discovering it twenty minutes in.

The reason is the same as on any machine: a half-finished descale leaves acid in the circuit with a machine that believes it is ready to brew. If it does stop — power cut, an empty tank — finish the cycle and run the rinse before making anything.

Use the Philips descaler. Philips specifies CA6700 for its own and Saeco machines, and descaler is one of the few places where the maker's insistence is about the circuit rather than the brand.

AquaClean: what it does and does not do

The AquaClean filter is marketed on a large number — up to 5,000 cups without descaling — and that number is real but conditional in a way worth spelling out.

That last point is the single commonest Philips support question, and it is not a fault.

The rest of the routine

Beyond the carafe and the descale cycle, these machines want the same attention any bean-to-cup does: empty the drip tray and grounds container before they ask, and keep the brew group rinsed under the tap on the models where it is removable. No detergent on the brew group — it retains it, and you will taste it in the next several coffees.

Our records for the three LatteGo machines we hold are on their pages: the 5400, and the specification records for the 3300 and 2300.

Choosing between the models rather than cleaning one? Which Philips LatteGo to buy covers what actually separates the 2300, 3300 and 5400.

AquaClean is one of only two filters we have found that replace descaling rather than supplementing it — which water filter fits your machine has the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Philips LatteGo dishwasher safe?

Yes. Philips states LatteGo is dishwasher safe. Separate the two parts after each use and either put them in the dishwasher or rinse them under running lukewarm water with a little dish soap.

How do I know when to descale a Philips espresso machine?

The Calc/Clean light tells you. When it is on steadily, descale — it maintains coffee temperature and taste as well as protecting the machine.

Do I remove the AquaClean filter before descaling?

Yes, and the LatteGo too. Both come out before the cycle starts. Leaving the filter in during a descale ruins the cartridge and weakens the cycle.

Does AquaClean mean I never have to descale?

No. Philips states that even with an AquaClean filter you still need to descale after eight filter cycles. The filter postpones descaling rather than removing it.

My machine asks to descale right after I fitted an AquaClean filter — is it faulty?

No. Scale already in the machine does not leave because the incoming water improved. If the prompt was due before the filter went in, it stays due.
