Grind cleaning tablets through it, then purge with coffee. Empty the hopper, add the tablets — Urnex gives one jar cap for a home espresso grinder, two for a shop grinder — set a medium grind and run them through, then run coffee beans through afterwards to purge the residue. Baratza recommends this and says it is highly recommended if you grind mostly dark roast, because that is where the oil comes from. Wash the hopper and grounds bin in warm soapy water and dry them thoroughly. The tablets clean the burrs and casing without dismantling anything.

What actually builds up in there

Two things, and they behave differently. Fines — the dust that every grind produces — pack into the corners of the burr chamber and the chute. Coffee oil coats everything it touches and then goes stale, which is the part you taste.

That is why roast level matters more than frequency of use. A grinder doing two doses a day of a light roast stays fairly clean; the same grinder on a dark, visibly oily roast needs the same attention in a fraction of the time. Baratza makes exactly this point: tablets are highly recommended if you are grinding primarily dark roast.

The symptom is rarely dramatic. Stale oil does not block anything, it just makes every cup taste slightly of the last month.

The tablet clean, step by step

This is the routine that does most of the work, and it takes about five minutes:

  1. Empty the hopper of coffee completely.
  2. Add the tablets. Urnex gives the dose as one jar cap for a home or espresso grinder, two for a shop grinder.
  3. Set a medium grind and run them through.
  4. Purge with coffee. Run beans through afterwards and discard that grind — this clears tablet residue out of the chute.

The tablets are formulated to lift oil and particles from the burrs and the casing without taking the grinder apart, which is the entire appeal. Urnex describes them as made from natural, biodegradable ingredients.

Do not substitute rice, whatever the internet says. It is harder than the tablets are designed to be and several manufacturers void warranties over it.

The part tablets cannot reach

Tablets clean the grind path. They do not clean the hopper walls, the lid, or the grounds bin, and those hold oil too. Baratza’s guidance is to wash the hopper and grounds bin in warm soapy water and dry them thoroughly — the drying matters, because any water going back into a burr chamber is worse than the oil you removed.

A stiff brush gets the chute and the area around the burrs between tablet cleans. If you are going further than that and actually removing burrs, follow your own manufacturer’s instructions rather than a general guide, because burr alignment and reassembly differ by machine and getting it wrong changes the grind.

The adjustment that jams burrs

Worth stating on a cleaning page because it is the most common self-inflicted grinder fault: on most grinders with a stepped or stepless collar, adjust the grind only while the burrs are turning.

De’Longhi says this explicitly for its built-in grinders — set the grinder only when the machine is actively grinding beans — and the same logic applies broadly. Turning an adjustment against stationary burrs with coffee between them is how they jam, and a jam is a dismantling job rather than a five-minute one.

If yours has already jammed and gone noisy, the usual cause is something in the beans that is not a bean. Power off at the wall first, then vacuum the hopper out so you can see in. Our De’Longhi problems guide works through that sequence.

How often

There is no published universal interval, and anyone who gives you one is guessing at your beans. The honest version is that the schedule is set by what you grind:

The practical trigger is taste. When coffee you know well starts tasting flat or faintly rancid and the beans are fresh, clean the grinder before you blame the bag.

Frequently asked questions

How do I clean a coffee grinder without taking it apart?

Grinder cleaning tablets. Empty the hopper, add the tablets — Urnex gives one jar cap for a home espresso grinder — set a medium grind, run them through, then purge with coffee beans. They lift oil and particles from the burrs and casing without dismantling anything.

Can I use rice to clean a coffee grinder?

Don’t. Rice is harder than purpose-made cleaning tablets are designed to be, and several grinder manufacturers treat it as grounds for voiding a warranty.

How often should I clean my grinder?

It depends on what you grind rather than how much. Baratza singles out dark roasts as the case where tablets are highly recommended, because that is where the oil comes from. Light roasts at low volume need it far less. Taste is the practical trigger.

Why did my grinder jam when I changed the setting?

Most grinders should be adjusted only while the burrs are turning. De’Longhi states this for its built-in grinders, and the logic holds generally — turning an adjustment against stationary burrs with coffee between them is how they jam.

Can I wash the hopper?

Yes — Baratza’s guidance is warm soapy water for the hopper and grounds bin, dried thoroughly. The drying matters: water going back into a burr chamber is worse than the oil you just removed.
