Three faults belong to the Bambino Plus specifically, because of its automatic milk system. Froth and temperature lights flashing together is a steam function error: hold the STEAM button for three seconds to purge, and check the tank. Milk coming out too hot is usually the jug not sitting on the sensor. Water appearing in the drip tray after steaming is the machine purging on purpose, not a leak. Everything else it shares with the rest of the range.
The one indicator pattern the BES500 instruction book documents as a fault. Everything else the lights do is normal operation.
This is the fault people arrive searching for, and it has a documented meaning rather than a guessed one. The BES500 instruction book lists the symptom as Froth and temperature lights flashes together.
and gives the cause in three words: Steam function error.
It lists a second possible cause alongside it — the water tank may be empty.
The remedy is a purge, and it is a deliberate button hold rather than a tap: Press and hold steam button for 3 seconds to purge the system.
Then fill the tank.
Two things are worth saying about this. First, it is a steam error, so the machine will often still pull espresso perfectly while showing it — which is why it reads as mysterious rather than as a steam fault. Second, the tank cause is not a throwaway: the Bambino Plus purges water through the steam circuit as part of normal operation, so a tank that is low, or one that is full but not locked down, starves exactly the circuit that is erroring.
The instruction book documents no other indicator-light fault code for this machine, and this page does not invent any. If the lights are doing something else, they are describing normal operation — heating, ready, or the milk temperature and froth settings you selected.
The Bambino Plus froths automatically by sensing the jug, which is a feature the plain Bambino does not have — and a fault the plain Bambino therefore cannot have. The book lists the symptom as Milk too hot.

The remedy has two halves and most people only do the second: Ensure milk jug is correctly positioned on sensor. Adjust milk temperature setting.
Seat the jug properly first. A jug that is sitting slightly off the sensor is not reporting its temperature accurately, so turning the temperature setting down is compensating for a bad reading rather than fixing it.
Use the jug that came with the machine. The sensor is in the drip tray beneath it, and the system was designed around that jug's base and volume.

, and then explains it: Immediately after the steam function, the machine will purge water into the drip tray. This ensures the thermocoil is at the optimal temperature.
That is the whole explanation. The Bambino Plus heats one thermocoil for both jobs, steam runs it hotter than espresso needs, so after steaming it dumps hot water to bring itself back down. Water in the tray after a milk drink is the machine getting ready to pull a good shot.
The practical instruction is simply to keep up with it: Ensure the drip tray is firmly pushed in place and emptied whenever the indicator is displayed.
A tray that is full or not pushed home is what turns a designed purge into a puddle on the counter.
The book's other listed cause is the familiar one: a water tank that is not fully inserted and locked into position.
The book lists this as Machine is on but ceases to operate.
, and the cause is a safety device rather than a failure: The safety thermal-cut out may have activated due to the pump overheating.
The reset is a specific button combination, and it is short enough that people hold it too long: Press the 1 CUP and STEAM button simultaneously for 0.5 seconds to switch the machine off and unplug from the power outlet.
Then leave it: Allow to cool for about 30-60 minutes.
Half a second, both buttons, then out at the wall. After it has cooled, plug it back in and it should behave normally.
A cut-out that trips once after a run of back-to-back drinks is the machine protecting its pump. One that trips repeatedly is not something to keep resetting, and the book agrees: If problem persists, call Breville Support.
The Bambino Plus has programmable shot volumes, so this symptom has a cause the manual machines do not: the book lists Too much/too little espresso is being delivered to the cup.

Shot volume is the part that is on the machine, and it is reprogrammable rather than fixed, so a machine delivering a consistently odd volume is usually one that was programmed to.
The answer to the size question: 53.3 mm, which is what a 54 mm-class portafilter actually takes.

The remedy it gives is to press and hold the steam button for three seconds to purge the system, then fill the tank. Because it is a steam error, the machine will often still pull espresso normally while showing it.
For the case the book documents — the machine on but no longer operating, caused by the safety thermal cut-out activating after the pump overheated — the instruction is to press the 1 CUP and STEAM buttons simultaneously for half a second to switch it off, unplug it, and allow it to cool for about 30 to 60 minutes. Half a second is deliberate; people commonly hold it far longer.
The book gives one cause: the jug is incorrectly positioned. The remedy is to make sure the milk jug is sitting correctly on the sensor first, and only then adjust the milk temperature setting. A jug slightly off the sensor is not reporting its temperature accurately, so turning the setting down is compensating for a bad reading rather than fixing it. Use the jug that came with the machine.
Usually because it is supposed to. The book lists the auto purge feature as the first cause and explains that immediately after steaming the machine purges water into the drip tray to bring the thermocoil to the optimal temperature. Keep the tray pushed firmly in place and empty it whenever the indicator shows. The other listed cause is a water tank that is not fully seated.
That symptom is common to the whole Breville range rather than specific to this machine, and the listed causes run in a fixed order: an empty water tank, a tank not pushed fully down and locked into place, a machine needing descaling, and only then coffee ground too finely, an overfilled basket, over-tamping or a blocked basket. The BES500 instruction book does not mention a tank water filter for this machine, unlike the Barista Pro and Barista Express books, which do. Descaling still applies: the book lists a machine needing descaling as a cause of no water and no steam.
