BUNN makes two kinds of home coffee maker, and the choice is between them before it is between models. The Speed Brew and Velocity Brew family works like BUNN's commercial brewers: an internal stainless steel tank keeps 70 oz of water hot all the time, so pouring cold water in the top pushes hot water through the grounds at once - BUNN's own site describes the result as cafe taste in four minutes. The cost is a tank that stays on. The Heat N Brew is a conventional programmable 10-cup machine that heats water on demand, sets a brew start time, and brews as little as 20 oz for a travel mug. Every model below is 10 cups; the differences are the carafe (glass or thermal), the housing and the price, and each one's facts are taken from its own listing.
Bunn-O-Matic has made dispensed-beverage equipment since 1957, and its home Speed Brew line borrows a commercial brewer's trick. Every Speed Brew and Velocity Brew listing states the same thing: an internal, commercial-grade stainless steel hot water tank that keeps 70 oz of water always hot. Pour a carafe of cold water into the bowl on top and it displaces already-hot water through the sprayhead, which is why the brew is fast and why BUNN's own site sums the family up as cafe taste in four minutes. The consequence is equally simple: the tank is heated whenever the machine is switched on, so the Speed Brew is at its best on a counter where it stays on and gets used, and at its worst as a once-a-week machine.
The Heat N Brew is the other design. Its listing describes a programmable 10-cup machine with a commercial-style multi-stream sprayhead, a digital clock for a programmed brew start, and brewing from as little as 20 oz to fill a travel mug. It heats water when you ask it to, like any drip machine. If you want a brew waiting when you wake up, or you brew once a day, this is the BUNN that fits; if you want a pot ready in minutes at any hour, the tank design is.
Within the tank family the brewing system is the same and the housings differ. The Velocity Brew GRB is the plainest - black with a stainless faceplate - and the entry price. The Speed Brew Classic BX is the same machine in the classic stainless faceplate and tank-wrap look, and both list BUNN's drip-free carafe. The Speed Brew Elite CSB2B is the current design: matte black with polished stainless accents and a pour-in bowl with a water level indicator, which the Elite and Platinum listings mention and the older housings' listings do not. All three brew into a glass carafe on a warming plate.
The two thermal models swap that plate for a vacuum-insulated, double-walled carafe that each listing states holds serving temperature for two hours or more: the Speed Brew BT in the classic housing and the Speed Brew Platinum Thermal CSB3T in the current one, with the water level indicator. A thermal carafe means no hot plate cooking the coffee, at the cost of not being able to see how much is left. The Heat N Brew HB stands apart as the programmable, heat-on-demand machine described above. Every listing states designed and assembled in the USA.
A pot several times a day, machine left on: the tank family. Choose glass (Elite CSB2B, or Classic BX and Velocity GRB to save) if you drink the pot quickly and like to see the level; thermal (Platinum CSB3T, or BT to save) if a pot sits for an hour or two. One pot in the morning, set the night before: Heat N Brew - it is the only programmable model and the only one that brews a single travel mug. Not sure: the Speed Brew Elite is the current glass design and the middle of the range on price.
What none of them offers, from their listings: a built-in grinder, a brew-strength setting, or single-serve pods.
