Buy Breville if you want to make espresso. Buy De’Longhi if you want espresso made for you. That is the honest short answer, and our own evaluations line up with it: every one of the five Breville machines we have assessed is semi-automatic — you grind, you tamp, you pull the shot — while two of De’Longhi’s three are bean-to-cup machines that do the whole drink at one touch. The award standings follow the same split: Breville holds our 2026 Best Overall Espresso Machine award and three of the honorable mentions in that category, and De’Longhi’s standing is an honorable mention in Best Bean-to-Cup Machine. Neither brand is better than the other in the abstract. They are answering different questions, and the one you are asking decides the brand.

The difference in one table

Both brands make good machines. They are not trying to make the same machine, and that is the whole decision. This is how the two ranges differ across everything we have evaluated.

Choose Breville if you want to make the espresso yourself

Breville’s range is built on one assumption: that you want to be involved. Every machine of theirs we have evaluated takes a portafilter you fill, tamp and lock in yourself. What changes as you move up the range is how much the machine helps.

This is also where the brand’s record is strongest. Breville holds our 2026 Best Overall Espresso Machine award and three of the four honorable mentions in that category, and the Dual Boiler is an honorable mention in Best Dual Boiler. If the question is specifically about making espresso, that is the strongest documented record on this page.

Choose De’Longhi if you want the machine to make it for you

De’Longhi’s range leans the other way. Two of the three machines we have evaluated are bean-to-cup: beans go in a hopper, you press a drink, and the machine grinds, doses, brews and froths without a portafilter ever being involved. There is no tamping to learn because there is nothing to tamp.

That is a real category, not a lesser one, and it is where the brand’s standing sits: the Dinamica Plus is an honorable mention in our 2026 Best Bean-to-Cup Machine award. De’Longhi also makes semi-automatic machines — the La Specialista Arte takes a portafilter like any Breville — so the brands do overlap. The centre of gravity is just in a different place.

The trade is control. A bean-to-cup machine decides the grind, the dose and the shot for you, which is the entire appeal and also the entire cost. If you ever want to change how a shot pulls, that is the adjustment you have given away.

Breville or De’Longhi? The answer by how you actually drink

Forget the brands for a second and answer this instead, because it decides the brand for you.

Both brands also make Nespresso machines, which is where the confusion starts

A lot of people comparing these two brands are actually looking at Nespresso machines, and the reason is that Nespresso does not build its own. Nespresso is a Nestlé system, and the machines are manufactured under licence by partners — Breville builds the Creatista line and De’Longhi builds the Lattissima line, both to Nespresso’s specification.

So a "Breville vs De’Longhi" question about Nespresso machines is really a question about two cabinets around the same brewing system. The coffee comes from the same capsules, at the same pressure, under the same Nespresso engineering. What differs is the build, the milk system and the controls.

That is a different purchase from everything else on this page. A capsule machine is a closed system — you buy Nespresso’s coffee for the life of the machine. The machines compared above all take whatever beans you want, which is the thing most people are weighing when they ask which brand to buy.

Once you have picked a brand, which machine?

The brand is the easy half. These comparisons take the next step, each built from the same verified specifications:

Settled on Breville but not on the model? Which Breville espresso machine to buy sorts the eight of them by the four decisions that actually separate them.

Settled on De'Longhi instead? Which De'Longhi espresso machine to buy starts with the fork that matters: a machine you operate, or one that operates itself.

Frequently asked questions

Is Breville better than De’Longhi?

Not in the abstract — they build different kinds of machine. For making espresso yourself, Breville has the stronger documented record: it holds our 2026 Best Overall Espresso Machine award and three of the honorable mentions in that category. For a machine that makes the whole drink at one touch, De’Longhi’s bean-to-cup range is where its standing is, with the Dinamica Plus an honorable mention in Best Bean-to-Cup Machine.

Should I buy Breville or De’Longhi?

Decide how involved you want to be. If you want to grind, tamp and pull shots, buy Breville — every machine of theirs we have evaluated is semi-automatic. If you want to press one button and get a finished drink, buy a De’Longhi bean-to-cup. If you want espresso without learning to texture milk, both brands offer automatic milk systems.

What is the difference between Breville and De’Longhi espresso machines?

The main structural difference is who makes the coffee. Breville’s range is semi-automatic: a portafilter you fill and tamp yourself, with the machine assisting. Most of De’Longhi’s range is bean-to-cup: no portafilter at all, with the grinding, dosing, brewing and frothing automated. De’Longhi does also make semi-automatic machines, such as the La Specialista Arte.

Do Breville and De’Longhi both make Nespresso machines?

Yes. Nespresso machines are built by licensed partners rather than by Nespresso itself: Breville makes the Creatista line and De’Longhi makes the Lattissima line, both to Nespresso’s specification. If you are comparing Nespresso models, you are comparing two builds of the same capsule brewing system rather than two different approaches to coffee.

Which brand is better for a beginner?

If "beginner" means you want good coffee immediately with nothing to learn, a De’Longhi bean-to-cup removes every variable. If it means you are new but want to learn espresso, Breville’s Bambino line is the common starting point — it assumes you will add a grinder, and its automatic steam wand handles the hardest skill for you while you learn the rest.

Does CoffeeLabAdvisor publish scores for these machines?

Scores appear on our award pages, which is where the scorecard that justifies them lives. Everywhere else, including this page, we name the award standing instead — a winner or an honorable mention — because a number invites comparison by subtraction, which is not what an award is.
