A knock box is a bin with a padded bar across it: you strike the portafilter on the bar and the spent puck drops in, instead of into the sink or the compost caddy one puck at a time. It is the accessory that makes a home espresso bar tidy, and the decision is size. A compact box such as the Grindenstein - about 10 by 11 cm, six to eight pucks per Dreamfarm - lives on the drip tray. A Breville-fit box is designed to sit on a Breville drip tray. A cafe-grade steel box takes a day's pucks and a hard strike. Beside it, two tools do more for the shot than any box: a distribution tool that levels the grounds before the tamp, and a dosing funnel that keeps them in the basket while you grind and stir. Five verified listings, each described in its own words.
Every shot leaves a compressed puck of wet grounds in the basket. Without a knock box it goes into the bin one puck at a time with a spoon, or into the sink where it blocks the drain. The knock box is the cafe answer scaled down: a container with a bar across the top, padded with rubber, that you strike the edge of the portafilter against so the puck drops out whole. Espresso Parts, the cafe supplier, sells them from a 6 in round home box to pull-out steel drawers for a counter cutout; at home, three sizes cover everyone.
Compact. Dreamfarm's Grindenstein is 10.2 cm long and 11.0 cm wide, holds about six to eight pucks and is made of ABS, TPE and stainless steel, per Dreamfarm's page; its listing adds the thick rubber sleeve that protects the handle, absorbs the strike and keeps it quiet, and that it goes in the dishwasher. Breville-fit. Breville's Knock Box 10 is sized to store on a Breville drip tray, with a removable knock bar for cleaning, in plastic and brushed stainless steel, per its listing. Cafe-grade. Rattleware's 6 by 5.5 by 4 in box is welded stainless steel with reinforced corners and a non-slip rubber base, built for cafe use, per its listing - the one to buy if you pull many shots a day or strike hard.
A knock box tidies up after the shot; two small tools change the shot itself. A distribution tool - a disc with angled blades, spun on the basket before tamping - levels the bed so water meets the puck evenly. Normcore's gravity distributor is 58.5 mm with a five-blade 304 stainless base and, per its listing, sets its own depth under gravity, so there is no height screw to readjust every time the dose or the grind changes. It complements the WDT tool covered on our WDT guide rather than replacing it: WDT breaks clumps, distribution levels the surface, the tamp compresses. A dosing funnel is a magnetic ring that snaps onto the basket - Normcore's is 18 mm tall anodized aluminium with nine pressed-in neodymium magnets, per its listing - so you can grind straight into the basket and stir with a WDT tool without grounds on the counter. Both fit the 58 mm standard; check the portafilter size chart before buying for a 54 mm Breville or a 51 mm De'Longhi.
