An espresso machine is the largest gift in coffee and the easiest to get wrong, because the machine is only part of the purchase. Pre-ground supermarket coffee will not make good espresso in any of them, so a machine without a grinder is half a gift. The honest way to buy one is to decide which of three things the recipient actually wants: a drink at the press of a button, a machine they will learn on, or the grinder they are already missing.
The hidden costA grinder. Budget it before the machine
Press-a-buttonA pod machine, and no apology needed
Learn on itA semi-automatic with a built-in grinder

The cost nobody mentions
This is the whole guide in one paragraph. An espresso machine sets the ceiling on what someone can make; the grinder decides how close they get to it. Gifting a machine to somebody with no grinder means gifting them a second purchase they did not budget for.
If the person already owns a machine, the grinder is the better gift, and our grinder pairing tool matches the reviewed field to specific machines.

Coffee grinderBaratza EncoreThe default first grinder - forty settings, a brew-method grinder that reaches espresso in big steps.

Coffee grinderBaratza Virtuoso+The Encore with a timer, metal trim and the M2 burr - the brew-grinder upgrade.

There is no shame in this and it is the right answer more often than enthusiasts admit. A pod machine makes a consistent drink with no skill, no grinder and no cleanup. What it costs is capsules, forever, which our pod page prices out.

If they want to learn espresso
Then they want a semi-automatic, and ideally one with a grinder in the box so the gift is complete. Our beginner guide covers what to expect in the first month, which is mostly bad shots.

Frequently asked questions
Is an espresso machine a good gift?
For the right person, it is the best gift in coffee. For the wrong one it is a large object that needs a grinder, a routine and a tolerance for bad shots in the first month. Decide which you are buying for before you decide on a budget.
Do I need to buy a grinder too?
If the machine has no grinder built in, yes, and you should budget it before the machine. Pre-ground supermarket coffee will not make good espresso at any machine price.
What if they already have a machine?
Buy the grinder. It is the upgrade that changes more cups than replacing the machine would, and it is the thing most people put off.
Is a pod machine a cop-out gift?
No. It is the honest answer for someone who wants a drink rather than a hobby. The trade is capsule cost, forever, which is worth understanding before you buy.
Should I wait for Black Friday?
If you can. Espresso machines are among the most discounted items in November, and our deal pages carry live prices through the season so you can judge a real discount from a crossed-out list price.
