Three things are specific to the Barista Pro because of what it has that the Bambinos do not. A blocked filter basket that the cleaning pin will not clear has a documented second remedy: dissolve a cleaning tablet in hot water and soak the basket and portafilter for about twenty minutes. Coffee not hot enough can be fixed on the machine, because the brew temperature is adjustable. And the water filter is on a two-month schedule that directly reduces how often you descale.
What the stream tells you, using the symptom names the BES878 book itself uses. Move the grind one step at a time.
This is the most useful sentence in any of the four Breville books we read for this section of the site, and it appears in the Barista Pro's book rather than the Bambinos'.
A blocked filter basket is listed as a cause of espresso that only drips from the portafilter spouts or not at all
and of No crema.
The first remedy is the one everyone knows: Use the pin on the end of the provided cleaning tool to unblock the hole(s).
What the Barista Pro book adds is what to do when that does not work: If the hole(s) remain blocked, dissolve a cleaning tablet in hot water and soak filter basket and portafilter in solution for approx. 20 minutes.

That matters because a basket blocked by oil rather than by grounds cannot be poked clear — the pin pushes through a hole that closes behind it. Coffee oils polymerise into a varnish that only a detergent designed for it will lift, which is precisely what an espresso machine cleaning tablet is. Twenty minutes of soaking will restore a basket most people would have replaced.
Rinse thoroughly afterwards, as the book says. Cleaning solution left in a basket will taste of exactly what it is.
For the flashing CLEAN light and the FLUSH alert - the backflush cycle, which is not descaling.
The Barista Pro grinds, doses and brews in one machine, so when the shot is wrong there are more dials in reach than on a Bambino — and more ways to chase the wrong one.
The book's causes for Espresso only drips from the portafilter spouts or not at all.
are coffee ground too finely, too much coffee in the basket, coffee tamped too firmly, the tank empty or unseated, a blocked basket, and a machine needing descaling. For Espresso runs out too quickly.
it is the mirror image: ground too coarsely, not enough coffee, tamped too lightly.
On this machine the dose remedy has an extra step the Bambino books do not have, because the Barista Pro ships with the Razor trimming tool: After tamping, trim the coffee dose using the Razor™ dose trimming tool.
That is how you make the dose repeatable rather than guessed — tamp, then trim to the line, and the puck is the same height every time.

If espresso is running around the outside of the portafilter instead of through it, the book lists that separately as Espresso runs out around the edge of the portafilter.

Every Breville book lists a cold-coffee symptom, but the Barista Pro's list includes a remedy the Bambino books cannot offer, because the Bambinos have no adjustable brew temperature.

are: cups not pre-heated, portafilter not pre-heated, milk not hot enough if you are making a milk drink, and Water temperature needs to be adjusted.
Do the free ones first, because they are the usual answer. Rinse cups under hot water outlet.
A cold ceramic cup will take more heat out of a double shot than any temperature setting will put back. The portafilter matters just as much and is more often skipped.
For milk specifically the remedy is simply Texture milk for a longer period of time.

Only after those does the machine setting come into it: the book's remedy is to increase the brew temperature, referring you to its own Adjusting Shot Temperature section for the button sequence. We deliberately do not reproduce that sequence here, because it belongs to a specific firmware and model variant and getting it wrong in print is worse than sending you to the book that came with your machine.

The first is the one to rule out before worrying: Machine has not reached operating temperature.

The Barista Pro heats quickly enough that people reach for steam before it is ready.
Then the shared three — tank empty, tank not seated, machine needs descaling — and finally Steam wand is blocked.

A wand blocks from the inside, from milk drawn back as it cools. Purging for a second before and after every milk drink, and wiping the wand immediately, prevents nearly all of it.
The Barista Pro takes a filter in the water tank, which the Bambino and Bambino Plus do not, and its book is unusually direct about the payoff: Replacing the water filter every 2 months will reduce the need to de-scale the machine.
And for anyone on hard water: If you live in a hard water area, we recommend changing the water filter more frequently.
This is the cheapest preventive maintenance on the machine. Descaling appears in the book as a listed cause of no water, no steam and espresso that will not flow — so a filter changed on schedule is not housekeeping, it is the thing that stops three separate faults from arriving.
The book does not print a part number in its troubleshooting section, saying only that replacement filters come from Breville. The card below carries its listing's own compatibility statements; check them against your machine rather than taking ours for it.

Go straight there for a machine that keeps cutting out after cooling, or any sign of water reaching the electrical base rather than the drip tray.

The answer to the size question: 53.3 mm, which is what a 54 mm-class portafilter actually takes. Listing states a 0.2 mm thick 316 stainless steel puck screen measuring 53.3 mm, supplied in a 3-pack, and lists compatibility with the Ninja ES601 and Ninja Luxe Café as well as the Breville Barista Express, Barista Express Impress, Barista Touch, Bambino and Bambino Plus, and most 54 mm portafilter machines. It notes it is not recommended where the shower head has protruding screws.

If they remain blocked, the book says to dissolve a cleaning tablet in hot water and soak the filter basket and portafilter in the solution for approximately 20 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. The second step is the one people do not know about, and it is what clears a basket blocked by coffee oil rather than by grounds — which a pin cannot fix.
The book lists four causes: cups not pre-heated, portafilter not pre-heated, milk not textured long enough if it is a milk drink, and the water temperature needing adjustment. Do the first two first — rinse the cups and the portafilter under the hot water outlet and dry the portafilter — because a cold cup removes more heat from a double shot than a temperature setting will add. Unlike the Bambinos, the Barista Pro does let you raise the brew temperature; the button sequence is in its own manual.
Five listed causes: the machine has not reached operating temperature, the water tank is empty, the tank is not fully inserted and locked into position, the machine needs descaling, or the steam wand is blocked. Rule out the first by waiting — the Pro heats fast enough that people reach for steam early. Wands block from the inside as milk is drawn back while cooling, so purging briefly before and after every milk drink prevents most of it.
Every two months, and more often in a hard water area — both are the book's own wording. It also states the reason plainly: replacing the filter on that schedule reduces the need to descale. Since descaling is itself a listed cause of no water, no steam and espresso that will not flow, the filter is the cheapest preventive maintenance on the machine.
Dose consistency. The book's remedy for too much coffee in the basket is to lower the dose and then, after tamping, trim the coffee dose using the Razor dose trimming tool. Tamping and then trimming to the line gives you the same puck height every time, which is what makes a shot repeatable rather than lucky.
Three listed causes: the portafilter is not inserted into the group head correctly, there are coffee grounds around the filter basket rim breaking the seal, or there is too much coffee in the basket. Rotate the portafilter until you feel resistance, and wipe the rim before locking it in — the book's wording is to clean excess coffee from the rim to ensure a proper seal in the group head.
It holds a 2026 Best Overall Espresso Machine honorable mention here, which is the recognition this site gives and the only one it publishes outside an award page. Nothing on this page is a verdict on the machine — it is the documented failure list from its own instruction book, and a machine with a grinder, an LCD and adjustable temperature simply has more listed symptoms than one without.
