Best Tamper for the Breville Barista Express: 53.3 mm, and Seven That State the Fit
The Barista Express takes a 53.3 mm tamper in its 54 mm basket. Seven that state the fit on their own listings, Breville's own two among them, and when a spring is worth paying for.
8 facts, each with a source below5 questions answered9 verified products
The Barista Express ships with a 54 mm plastic tamper that lives in the cradle on the front of the machine, and most owners replace it. The replacement has to be 53.3 mm, not 54: the basket is 54 mm across and a tamper has to fit inside it, which is why every tamper made for this machine is sized a fraction under. Every tamper on this page states that fit on its own listing, including Breville's own replacement part and Breville's own spring-loaded upgrade. Past the size, the choice is between a plain tamper, where you supply and judge the pressure, and a spring-loaded one that stops at a set force; Breville's own instruction book puts the pressure at roughly 10 to 15 kg and says that applying it consistently matters more than the number, which is the whole case for a spring. If your shots channel, read our distribution guide before buying any tamper: an uneven bed is not a pressure problem.

53.3 mm, not 54: the one number to get right
A tamper too small leaves a ring of untamped coffee around the edge of the basket and water races through it; a tamper too large will not enter the basket at all. Neither is a technique problem. The Barista Express basket measures 54 mm, so the tamper that fits it is made a fraction under — 53.3 mm is the figure most makers settle on, and several say on their listings that it fits better than the common 53 mm. Our portafilter size chart lists the size for every machine we cover; for this one the answer is settled.

Spring-loaded, 15/25/30 lb springs, leveling guide
Breville labels its own two tampers 54 mm and the third-party makers label theirs 53.3 mm; both fit the same basket. The difference is naming, not size: Breville names the basket the tool is for, the others name the tool.
The one in the box, and when to replace it
The Barista Express comes with a plastic tamper that clips into a magnetic cradle on the front panel, and Breville sells it as a replacement part under the number .BES870XL/11.1 — the BES870XL in the part number is the machine's own model code. It does the job. Owners replace it for two reasons: it is light, so a level tamp depends entirely on the hand, and it gives no signal when enough pressure has been applied. If you have lost yours and only want the machine back as it shipped, the Breville part is the honest answer at the lowest price on this page. If you are replacing it because of how it tamps, read on.
Spring-loaded or plain
Breville's own instruction book for the Barista Express puts tamping pressure at roughly 10 to 15 kg and adds that applying the same pressure every time matters more than the exact amount. A plain tamper leaves both to you. A spring-loaded tamper compresses to a set force and stops, so the same shot gets the same tamp on a tired morning as on an attentive one, and the self-leveling collars that most of them add keep the base flat on the coffee, which fixes the other common error: a tilted puck that channels down one side whatever the force.
Breville's own Force Gauge Tamper takes the idea furthest and charges for it: a dial sets the force between 15.4 and 22 lb and the tool stops there. The Normcore, KNODOS and Feilair reach the same end with interchangeable springs at fixed weights, at a third of the price. Which is right is a question of how much you want to adjust; the cheapest spring-loaded option here does what Breville's instruction book asks.
What else is 53.3 mm, and what to do first
The same arithmetic sizes the rest of the 54 mm toolkit. A 53.3 mm puck screen sits on the tamped bed and keeps the shower screen clean; a 53.3 mm distributor levels the coffee before the tamp; the CREMA tool above does distributor and tamper in one. Before any of them, a distribution tool — a few fine needles stirred through the grounds — fixes more channeling than any tamper upgrade, because an uneven bed stays uneven however hard it is pressed. Our distribution guide and the accessories guide cover the rest; the Barista Express problems page says which fault is a tamp and which is not.

The answer to the size question: 53.3 mm, which is what a 54 mm-class portafilter actually takes. Listing states a 0.2 mm thick 316 stainless steel puck screen measuring 53.3 mm, supplied in a 3-pack, and lists compatibility with the Ninja ES601 and Ninja Luxe Café as well as the Breville Barista Express, Barista Express Impress, Barista Touch, Bambino and Bambino Plus, and most 54 mm portafilter machines. It notes it is not recommended where the shower head has protruding screws.
What size tamper does the Breville Barista Express take?
A 53.3 mm tamper. The basket is 54 mm across, and a tamper has to fit inside it; makers size theirs a fraction under, and several state on their listings that 53.3 mm fits better than the common 53 mm. Breville labels its own tampers 54 mm after the basket; they fit the same machine.
Is the tamper that comes with the Barista Express good enough?
It works, and Breville sells it as a replacement part. Owners replace it because it is light plastic, so a level tamp depends entirely on the hand, and it gives no signal when enough pressure has been applied. A spring-loaded tamper fixes both.
How hard should I tamp on a Barista Express?
Breville's own instruction book puts it at roughly 10 to 15 kg and says that consistency matters more than the number. A spring-loaded tamper applies the same force every time by design, which is why most of the tampers on this page have one.
Will a better tamper fix channeling?
Only if the cause was an uneven or tilted tamp. If the coffee bed is clumpy before you tamp, no tamper fixes it; a distribution tool stirred through the grounds does. Our distribution guide covers that step.
Do these tampers fit the Bambino, Barista Pro and Barista Touch too?
Most do, because those machines share the 54 mm basket; each listing names the models it fits and the table above repeats that list. The Breville Dual Boiler is the exception in the range: it takes a 58 mm basket and none of these tampers.
