Gemilai Espresso Machines: The Range We Have Reviewed

Every Gemilai espresso machine and grinder sold on Amazon in the US, reviewed and compared on one page, with what each step up the range actually buys.

5 products reviewed58mm portafilter on all 4 machines3 ways to heat the water

Gemilai makes 58mm espresso machines at prices where most brands use smaller, proprietary portafilters, and its US range climbs in one clear line. The Owl G3006 heats with a thermoblock and a heated group; the G3006A is the same Owl with a pressure valve, staged pre-infusion and a cold mode; the Ele G3028A adds a brew boiler and a pressure knob you turn during the shot; and the Whale G3038A is a full E61 heat-exchanger machine. None has a built-in grinder, which is why Gemilai also sells the Molight G9010B. What you are really choosing is how the machine heats its water, because that decides whether you can brew and steam at once, how long it takes to warm up, and how you control temperature.

Which Gemilai should you buy?

Three questions decide it. Answer them and the range explorer below opens on your machine.

1Do you need to brew and steam at the same time?

Milk drinks for several people, back to back.

2Do you want to change pressure during the shot?

Start gently, ramp up, taper off: simple pressure profiling.

3Light roasts, pre-infusion or iced coffee most weeks?

A gentler start and a capped peak help light roasts most.

How each Gemilai heats its water

This is the real difference between the machines, and the one the listings blur. It decides whether you can brew and steam at once, how long the machine takes to warm up, and how you set the temperature.

Reading a Gemilai spec sheet: dual PID, automatic frother, 2L boiler

Gemilai's listings use phrases that mean less, or something different, than they suggest. Here is what each one turned out to be in the hands-on evidence.

The listing says

Dual PID

G3006A and EleWhat it is

Two temperature settings. On the G3006A both run on one thermoblock; on the Ele one controls a brew boiler and one a steam thermoblock. Neither is a dual boiler, and neither brews and steams at once on US power.

The listing says

Automatic milk frother

EleWhat it is

A normal two-hole steam wand with a temperature probe that switches the steam off at your set milk temperature. You still hold the jug and texture the milk.

The listing says

2L brew steam boiler

WhaleWhat it is

One two-litre boiler with a heat exchanger inside it. That is how it brews and steams at once, but its PID sets the steam boiler, not the shot.

The listing says

Cold brew in about two minutes

G3006AWhat it is

A pulsed, low-temperature extraction through an espresso puck lasting up to three minutes. Good over ice; not coffee steeped for hours.

The listing says

Espresso to French press

Molight grinderWhat it is

The one hands-on test found its coarsest setting still too fine for pour-over or French press. Treat it as an espresso and moka pot grinder.

Is Gemilai a good brand?

Gemilai is a Chinese manufacturer, Guangdong Gemilai Intelligent Technology, which says it began in 2011, built its first household 58mm machine in 2012 and its first grinder in 2020. It also sells machines under a sub-brand, Corrima, whose models carry the CRM prefix you will see in many Gemilai model numbers. Its machines are well specified for their prices: a 58mm portafilter, PID temperature control and strong steam appear even on the entry Owl.

What we cannot yet tell you is how they hold up. Every hands-on review we found was done on a unit Gemilai supplied, which the reviewers disclose, and we found no long-term report from someone who bought one at retail. Owner ratings we could read are few. That is not evidence of a problem; it is an absence of evidence, and it is the main risk you take buying any machine in this range today.

On service, Gemilai's written warranty is two years from a purchase on its own online store, with US repairs routed through an authorised service centre in Covina, California. The policy does not say whether an Amazon purchase from the Gemilai storefront is covered the same way, so ask Gemilai support before you buy if that affects your decision. Gemilai sells spare portafilters, gaskets, tanks and screens for the Owl and the Ele on its own store.

Gemilai model numbers you will see elsewhere: CRM, 3007, 3145, 3035, 3005E

Search for Gemilai and you will meet model numbers that are not in the list above. We looked for each by name on Amazon US and found only third-party spare parts, not the machines themselves, so we have not reviewed them. Here is what they are, from Gemilai's own pages and those of its Corrima sub-brand.

The commercial CRM machines with two groups are café equipment and outside the scope of this site.

Gemilai FAQ

Which Gemilai espresso machine is best?

It depends on how you make coffee. The Owl G3006 is the best-documented and the easiest way into a 58mm machine with PID. The Ele G3028A is the one to buy for pressure profiling and consistent milk. The Whale G3038A is the only one that brews and steams at the same time. None of the 5 products here holds a CoffeeLab award.

Where are Gemilai espresso machines made?

In China. Gemilai is Guangdong Gemilai Intelligent Technology, which describes its own factory and its Corrima sub-brand on its brand site. Machines sold in the US are 120 volt versions; some features differ from the 220 volt versions sold elsewhere, including the Ele's ability to brew and steam at the same time, which the US version lacks.

Does a Gemilai bought on Amazon come with a warranty?

Gemilai's written warranty policy gives two years from a purchase made through its own online store, and US warranty repairs go through an authorised service centre in Covina, California, after you contact Gemilai support. The policy does not say whether a purchase from the Gemilai storefront on Amazon receives the same two years. If that matters to you, ask Gemilai support in writing before you buy and keep your order confirmation.

What is the difference between the Gemilai Owl and the Ele?

The Owl heats with a thermoblock and a heated group; the Ele adds a 550 ml brew boiler in the group, a separate steam thermoblock, a pressure knob you can turn during the shot, and a steam probe that stops at a set milk temperature. Our Owl vs Ele comparison sets the two records side by side.

Is Gemilai better than Breville?

They make different trade-offs. Gemilai's machines use the 58mm commercial portafilter and strong steam at prices where Breville uses 54mm, while Breville has a far longer public ownership record in the US. Our Bambino vs Owl comparison works through that choice for the most common pair.

What does CRM mean in Gemilai model numbers?

CRM models are sold under Corrima, which Gemilai lists as its sub-brand; the CRM prefix appears on every Corrima model, while Gemilai's own US store renames the models it sells with a G prefix. Gemilai does not spell out what CRM stands for. None of the CRM machines is sold by Gemilai on Amazon US.
