Gemilai Molight G9010B Grinder Review (2026)

Gemilai

The Gemilai Molight G9010B is the grinder Gemilai sells alongside its espresso machines, often in a bundle with the Owl or the Ele. It uses 38mm stainless conical burrs, sixty grind positions and a timer, in an inclined aluminium body barely ten centimetres wide. The one hands-on test we could find rated it well for espresso. It also contradicted the listing on one important point: how coarse it can actually grind.

A compact 38mm conical grinder with low retention that hands-on testing found good for espresso. The same testing found it too fine at its coarsest for pour-over or French press, contrary to the listing.

Grind Quality for Espresso

The Molight grinds with 38mm stainless steel conical burrs driven by a 150 watt motor at a stated 430 rpm. In Brew Coffee Home's hands-on test, settings four to six were right for espresso, the grounds came out fluffy and clump-free, and static was not an issue. The same reviewer measured retention at about 0.3 grams per dose, which is low and matters for single dosing, where any coffee left in the grinder ends up in the next shot. Output was about one gram per second. There is a disagreement about the adjustment itself: Gemilai describes it as stepless with a sixty-point scale, while the hands-on reviewer describes adjusting by clicks and usually finding two or three clicks of useful range for a given coffee. Either way the steps are fine enough to dial in espresso. A 38mm burr set is small by espresso-grinder standards, so expect it to be slower and less refined than larger flat or conical burrs, but for a first espresso grinder it does the job the reviewer asked of it.

Range: Espresso Yes, French Press No

This is the most important point in this review. Gemilai's own page says the Molight covers fine espresso to pour-over and cold brew, and the Amazon listing mentions a coarser grind for French press. Brew Coffee Home, testing a unit Gemilai supplied, reached the opposite conclusion: if you want pour-over or French press, this grinder is not for you, because even the coarsest setting is still too fine. We give more weight to the hands-on result than to the listing, so treat the Molight as an espresso grinder that will also handle moka pot, not as an all-rounder. If you brew pour-over or French press as often as espresso, a grinder built for a wide range will serve you better, or you can add an inexpensive hand grinder for the coarse end. If espresso is all you make, the narrow range costs you nothing and gives you more resolution where you need it. Check the latest listing before buying, in case Gemilai has changed the burr carrier.

Workflow and Compatibility

The Molight has a timed mode, adjustable from five to sixty seconds, and a manual mode entered with a long press. The portafilter holder carries a microswitch, so pressing a portafilter against it starts the grind. Gemilai designed that holder around its own 58mm portafilters, and the hands-on reviewer found that a three-ear portafilter from another brand could not reach the switch, so if you do not own a Gemilai machine you may need the included dosing cup instead. The hopper holds about eighty grams, which suits weighing in single doses rather than filling it with a bag. The burrs come out without tools once the hopper is unscrewed, which makes cleaning easy. The display sits on the right-hand side, so placing the grinder hard against a wall on that side makes it harder to read. The body is aluminium alloy; the hopper, lid and chute are plastic.

Who It's For and Value

The Molight makes the most sense for someone buying a Gemilai Owl or Ele who wants a matched, compact espresso grinder and would rather not research grinders separately; that is why Gemilai bundles it. Its low retention, timer and portafilter switch make the daily routine quick, and its slim body takes up little counter space next to the machine. It is not the right grinder if you brew filter coffee as well, given the hands-on finding on coarse settings, or if you are buying for a machine with a pressure knob and want to chase small differences in light roasts, where larger burrs earn their extra cost. Gemilai's written warranty is two years for purchases made on its own store, and the policy does not say whether an Amazon purchase is covered the same way, so ask Gemilai support if that matters to you. As with the machines, the only hands-on review used a unit Gemilai supplied, and there is no long-term reliability record yet.

Gemilai Molight G9010B Grinder — FAQ

Is the Gemilai Molight G9010B good for espresso?

Hands-on testing says yes. Brew Coffee Home found settings four to six right for espresso, with fluffy, clump-free grounds, no static problems and about 0.3 grams of retention per dose. Its 38mm conical burrs are small for an espresso grinder, so it will not match larger burr sets for clarity, but it is a capable first grinder for a 58mm machine.

Can the Gemilai Molight grind for French press or pour-over?

Probably not well. Gemilai's page and the Amazon listing claim it can, but the hands-on test we found concluded that even its coarsest setting is still too fine for pour-over or French press. Treat it as an espresso and moka pot grinder. If you also brew coarse methods often, choose a wider-range grinder or pair it with an inexpensive hand grinder.

What burrs does the Gemilai G9010B use?

It uses 38mm stainless steel conical burrs, which Brew Coffee Home describes as a five-pointed star design, driven by a 150 watt motor at a stated 430 rpm. The burrs come out without tools once the hopper is removed, which makes cleaning straightforward. A 38mm conical burr set is on the small side for espresso grinders.

Does the Gemilai Molight work with other portafilters?

It grinds into any portafilter or the included dosing cup, but the hands-free start switch is sized for Gemilai's own 58mm portafilters. The hands-on reviewer found that a three-ear portafilter from another brand could not reach the switch. If your machine is not a Gemilai, plan on using the dosing cup or the manual mode rather than the portafilter switch.

Should I buy the Gemilai grinder bundle with the Owl?

If you only make espresso and milk drinks and want a compact, matched setup, the bundle is a simple choice and the Molight performed well for espresso in hands-on testing. If you also brew filter coffee, or want to grow into lighter roasts on a machine with pressure control, a grinder with larger burrs and a wider range is worth the extra research.
