Winner Blueprint Coffee

CoffeeLab Award 2026Coffee Shop of the Year

Delmar Loop, 6225 Delmar Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63130 · Open since 2013 · Blueprint Coffee runs three coffee bars — the founding Delmar bar evaluated here, one on Watson Road and one at Washington Boulevard — and a separate roastery at 1600 S 39th St. This award evaluates the Delmar bar, the company's founding and principal customer-facing venue; the other sites are named here so the scope is unambiguous.

52 candidates screened · 1 fully scored · 10 independent sources on the winner from 9 publications (own-source material cited separately, never counted) · 43 across the field · 5 gates passed · Evaluated September 2026 · No visit, no tasting — documented evidence only

CoffeeLabAdvisor's Best Coffee Shop award is an evidence-led editorial selection under a published methodology — not a blind tasting or a sensory ranking. It names the venue with the strongest documented evidence under that methodology. On that basis, Blueprint Coffee — Delmar Coffee Bar, the company's founding coffee bar at 6225 Delmar Blvd and inside St. Louis city on the city health department's register — receives this award. Its coffee record is a Good Food Awards coffee win in 2018 for a single Ethiopian lot, verified on the awarding body's own list and in two trade-press lists; alongside it sit four scores from an independent submission-based review programme, the most recent dated April 2026, a 2015 regional barista championship, a co-founder's 2014 national barista final, and national specialist coverage from 2024 and 2025. It also holds the only recognition identified in this evaluation that names a coffee bar rather than a roaster or a coffee: Imbibe Magazine named it Coffee Bar of the Year in 2018. The bar has operated at one address since 2013, is owned by its six founding members, and is supplied by the company's own roastery inside the city. This was a narrow decision. Goshen Coffee Roasters presented the strongest alternative coffee record in the field — a Good Food Awards coffee winner in 2023 and again in 2024, each time for a single lot, with company staff reaching the 2025 and 2026 national finals of the US Coffee Championships in two disciplines — and is recognised as an Honorable Mention, as is Kaldi's Coffee for a 2015 Good Food Awards win, a 2019 national title won by a member of its staff, and thirty-two years at its original DeMun address. The decision turned on what a coffee-shop award measures: whether a company's judged coffee record attaches more fully to the company's own founding bar, with its roastery in the same city, or to a separate non-roasting café opened later in the city by a roaster based elsewhere. That question was put to six independent external audits and then to a blind reviewer who was shown lettered files with no shop names and no sight of our reasoning; the reviewer reached the same answer independently. The ruling rests on a judgment those readers made, not on a rule that compels it, and the page says so. Evidence scores measure the strength of documented evidence available for evaluation; they are not sensory scores, inspection scores, or direct measurements of current coffee quality. Two of this winner's six dimensions carry the methodology's insufficient-evidence default because the company publishes no drink menu anywhere we could reach, so its total understates what is documented about its coffee, and we say so rather than letting the number speak for itself. CoffeeLabAdvisor gave 52 candidates a full evaluation under its published coffee shop methodology and screened further businesses at sweep level. We do not publish comparative scores for the rest of the field because we did not score the rest of the field.

2026 is the inaugural year of CoffeeLab Awards. Our methodology evaluates the whole coffee journey — equipment, grinders, roasters, brands, and independent coffee shops — holistically, using the strongest publicly available specialist evidence we identify. We document our research and decision-making for every award, and we expect the methodology to evolve as we gain experience.

Award summary

Location

6225 Delmar Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63130 — the company's founding coffee bar on Delmar Boulevard, at the same address since 2013. The Delmar Loop straddles a municipal boundary and this bar sits on the St. Louis city side — the city health department inspects it — which is why a St. Louis award attaches to it. This award evaluates this one bar; the company's two other bars and its separate city roastery are named on this page.

Specialty Focus

A roaster-owned bar serving its own coffee: single origins and blends roasted by the same company at its St. Louis roastery on a 1937 Gothot 23-kilo drum, served from a La Marzocco GB5 S. The producer is named for the award coffee — an Ethiopian lot from the Hambela area, sourced through METAD since 2016 — and origin and region are published for current retail.

Award Category

Our flagship city award. An editorial selection: the independent coffee shop in the city that our documented-evidence screening selected for full scoring, carried through to a six-dimension scorecard. The rest of the field is screened but not scored, so the award is not a ranking of the city. The award level (Gold/Silver/Bronze) is an absolute score on that shop against the published rubric, not a placing against other businesses. This is an evidence-led editorial award, not a blind tasting or citywide sensory ranking: we do not score every eligible shop, and no claim is made that a winner would defeat every other shop in its city in a head-to-head tasting.

Award Level

Silver (84/100) — the tier follows the score: six equal-weighted dimensions totalling 505, averaging 84.17, rounded to 84 against a Gold threshold of 90. Every figure on this page is a documentary-evidence score, not a sensory rating, and every score cites its evidence band — with each underlying fact scoring exactly once: the Good Food Awards win and the review scores inform Coffee Quality, the company's own producer statements inform Sourcing & Transparency, the staff competition record and the founding-member ownership inform Barista & Ownership, and the thirteen-year address record with the city inspection record informs Operational Consistency. Coffee Quality (90) sits at the ceiling of our band for an older or finalist-level judged result (86–90): a recognised body's blind panel selected a coffee this company produced in 2018, which is a win and so may occupy the top of that band, and the placement is lifted to the ceiling because an independent submission-based review programme has scored the company's coffee four times, most recently in April 2026 — corroboration that the capability persists. It does not enter the 90–95 band, which is reserved for a current-year result from a recognised body, and the 2018 win is eight cycles old. Sourcing & Transparency (85) is upper-mid in the own-materials band (80–88): the producer is named for the award coffee and origin and region are published for current retail, with importers not published and no third-party documentation of any purchase. Barista & Ownership (87) sits in the older judged band on indirect evidence: a co-founder reached the 2014 US Barista Championship national final and a staff member won a 2015 regional barista championship, both scored as indirect evidence of the capability of the people behind the company's coffee rather than as assessments of the cup, and both are more than a decade old. Operational Consistency (87) is upper in the own-materials band with third-party documentation: thirteen years at one address, published daily hours, city inspection records, and a 2024 roastery move that did not interrupt the bars. Plant-Based Milk and Value each carry the methodology's insufficient-evidence default of 78, disclosed below. Scoring below.

Why Blueprint Coffee Won

In 2013, we opened our first coffee bar and roastery in Saint Louis.

— Blueprint Coffee — own site, captured 2026-09-19

A Judged Coffee, Attached to the Bar That Serves It

The strongest evidence in this field is a recognised body's judged result on a coffee the company produced, and two companies hold one. What separated them is the relationship between that evidence and the awarded venue. Blueprint's award coffee was produced by Blueprint and is served at Blueprint's own founding bar, which has operated continuously at 6225 Delmar Blvd since 2013 and is supplied by the company's own roastery a few miles away inside the same city. There is no intermediate step in that chain. What the 2018 win establishes is that a recognised body's blind panel placed an Ethiopian coffee this company sourced and roasted among the best entered in its region that year. What it does not establish — and this page will not imply — is that the coffee served at Delmar today is better than the coffee at any other counter in the city. It was one lot, in one year, and the company has been judged by an independent review programme four times since, most recently in April 2026.

The Only Recognition in This Field That Names a Coffee Bar

Almost every judged result in this evaluation names a roaster or a coffee. One names a bar: Imbibe Magazine's 2018 Imbibe 75 called Blueprint Coffee its Coffee Bar of the Year, verified on the magazine's own page. It is a national drinks magazine's editorial title rather than a blind judged result, so it corroborates within a band and never sets one — but it is the only piece of evidence in the field that assesses the thing this award is actually for, a coffee bar, and it is eight years old, which the page states because age matters to how it is weighed.

Thirteen Years at One Address, Owned by the People Who Started It

Blueprint has been open at the same Delmar address since 2013 and is owned by its six founding members — "These founders (literally “members” in legalese)", in the company's own description — with no investor, franchise or holding company identified on any page we opened. It publishes daily hours, it appears on the City of St. Louis health department's inspection register with A grades at the two city bars we could open, and it moved roasting to a dedicated city building in 2024 without interrupting the bars. That is thirteen years of one venue operating under one ownership, documented by outside observers throughout.

Selected for Full Scoring on Documented Evidence

This award's claim is precise: among the St. Louis-area coffee shops we screened, Blueprint was selected for full scoring on the documented signals this methodology treats as relevant to a serious coffee programme — a recognised-body judged result on a coffee the company produced, an independent review record that is current, in-house roasting on named equipment inside the city, producer-level sourcing for the award coffee, a documented staff competition record, sustained single-site operation, and an official inspection record. It is not a claim that any other shop's coffee is inferior, and popularity metrics — review volume, reader polls, listing-site rankings — are recorded and score nothing anywhere in this evaluation.

Evidence Scorecard

Each score rates the strength of the publicly documented evidence we found for that dimension — not first-hand testing. We did not visit this shop or taste its coffee. That is our standard evaluation tier, defined in the methodology; hands-on assessment belongs to CoffeeLab Verified, which this shop has not undertaken.

Overall: 84/100 — Silver. Six equal-weighted dimensions per our venue awards methodology; Silver is the absolute-rubric tier for this score, not a placing against other shops.
These dimensions could not be evidenced, so each carries the methodology's insufficient-evidence default of 78 rather than a measurement of this shop. Two of the six dimensions in this total are therefore a default, not a finding — stated here because the overall score depends on them. It is not a neutral figure: it is a substantive assumption that unknown equals 78, and the reasoning is published in our methodology.

How to read these scores

"Coffee Shop of the Year" names the candidate our documented evidence and specialist-signal screening selected for full scoring — it is an editorial selection, not the output of scoring every shop in the city against each other. An evidence score does not represent a current sensory rating; it reflects the strength, independence and recency of the documentation available under this programme's rubric.

What Operational Consistency measures: sustained operation and a stable, documented offer over time — longevity, continuity at the awarded address, and documented continuity of operation over time. It is not a measurement of shot-to-shot consistency in the cup, which would require in-person testing we do not perform.

What the Specialist Community Says

Unlike general review aggregation, we grounded this in independent, named, checkable sources rather than anonymous review excerpts:

St. Louis Magazine (Sept 2023) — Blueprint Coffee celebrates its 10-year anniversary, Sep 2023

Key specialist signals: the Good Food Awards 2018 coffee winners list, verified on the awarding body's own all-years regional page and in two Daily Coffee News lists; Daily Coffee News's June 2024 feature on the new roastery; La Marzocco USA's January 2025 partner story naming the bar equipment; Imbibe Magazine's 2018 Coffee Bar of the Year; four scores from an independent submission-based review programme dated between 2013 and April 2026; CoffeeTalk's official-release standings for the 2014 US Barista Championship final; Feast's January 2016 report of the 2015 South Central regional barista title; St. Louis Magazine's coverage of the company's tenth anniversary in 2023. Honesty notes, because they matter more than the signals: the recognised-body win is from 2018 and was for a single lot; the review scores come from one programme and count once under our methodology; the staff competition results are more than a decade old and belong to the people, credited by name, not to the bar; Sprudge has covered this company since 2013 but blocks automated capture, so it is cited nowhere as a source here; and evidence scores measure documented evidence, not current sensory quality — we did not visit and did not taste, and this page says so wherever the numbers appear.

Their Equipment Setup

Documented from Daily Coffee News (June 2024): the company roastery at 1600 S 39th St, inside the city, where "The company’s 1937 Gothot 23-kilogram roaster is up and running in the new building", producing roughly 1,800 to 2,000 pounds a week. Documented from La Marzocco USA's partner story (January 2025): a La Marzocco GB5 S at the Delmar bar, with a KB90 and a Strada AV at the company's two other bars. Grinders are not named on any page we could open, and the company does not publish a drink menu.

We do not earn commission on café equipment: professional bar machines are not sold through our affiliate programme, and nothing in this section is a product recommendation. If you want home equipment evaluated on the same evidence standard, see our Best Overall Espresso Machine award or Best Overall Burr Grinder award.

Plant-Based Milk

○○○○○Not Confirmed

Not independently evidenced, and the reason is specific. Blueprint publishes no drink menu: not on its own site, not in its content indexes, not on any ordering platform, and not in an archive sweep of its domain. We also ran the same capture attempt for every leading candidate so the standard would be identical. A six-year-old priced menu for one of the company's other bars does name two plant milks, one at no surcharge and one at a dollar, but it is neither current nor about this venue, so it is not scored. How an unevidenced dimension is scored: it carries the methodology's insufficient-evidence default of 78 — an administrative value that prevents unsupported positive inference, not a representation of average performance, and not a measurement of this business. A missing menu is a fact about publishing, not about coffee, and our methodology forbids treating it as evidence against the business it describes. If the shop publishes or shares its menu, we will score the dimension and restate the total.

Known Limitations

No coffee shop is perfect, and no award page should pretend otherwise. We publish these honestly so you can make an informed decision.

🧭 An evidence-led selection, not a sensory verdict

Known limitation

This award names the venue with the strongest documented evidence under a published methodology. It is not a blind tasting and not a sensory ranking: we did not visit, did not taste, and make no claim about what is in the cup today. Every figure on this page rates the strength of documented evidence available for evaluation. We choose documented, repeatable, auditable evidence over unrepeatable impressions, and this disclosure is the cost of that choice.

🏅 The judged result is from 2018, and it was one lot

Known limitation

The recognised-body win that anchors Coffee Quality was awarded in 2018 for a single Ethiopian lot — not for the coffee on the bar today and not for the standing line. It is eight cycles old, which is why the dimension sits in our older-judged band and cannot enter the current band however it is corroborated. An independent review programme has scored the company four times, most recently in April 2026; that programme judges coffees a roaster chooses to submit, so our methodology counts it once, as corroboration within a band, and never as a second recognised-body result.

⚖️ The call was close, and the tiebreak is a judgment, not a rule

Known limitation

Goshen Coffee Roasters holds the more recent and more numerous recognised-body record in this field — a Good Food Awards coffee winner in 2023 and again in 2024, each for a single lot — and company staff reached the 2025 and 2026 US Coffee Championships national finals in two disciplines. On the coffee record alone that file leads. The decision turned on a different question: whether a company's judged coffee record attaches as fully to a separate café it opened later in the city, which does not roast and whose roastery is in another state, as it does to the company's own founding bar with its roastery in the same city. Six independent external audits pressed that question and a blind reviewer answered it without knowing which shop was which. They answered for the founding bar. We would rather state that than have a reader discover it, and Goshen is credited in full as an Honorable Mention.

🥛 Plant-based milk at the insufficient-evidence default

Known limitation

Blueprint publishes no drink menu that we could find on its own site, in its content indexes, on any ordering platform or in an archive sweep of its domain, so no plant milk is named and the dimension carries the insufficient-evidence default of 78 — an administrative value preventing unsupported positive inference, not a measurement of this business. A missing menu is a fact about publishing, not about coffee. We ran the identical capture attempt for every leading candidate so the standard would be the same for all of them, and we record that this default holds the winner's own total down.

💵 Value at the insufficient-evidence default

Known limitation

For the same reason, no current drink pricing could be located anywhere we could reach. The Value dimension carries the insufficient-evidence default of 78 rather than a guess. Closing this gap needs outreach or an in-store visit; if the company publishes or shares its prices, we will score the dimension and restate the total.

📉 Two defaults mean the total understates this file

Known limitation

Because two of six equal-weighted dimensions sit at the insufficient-evidence default, the 84 on this page is lower than the documented evidence about this company's coffee would otherwise support. We publish the number anyway, with this disclosure, rather than adjusting it — and our methodology does not permit a missing dimension to be read as evidence against the business it describes, in either direction.

👥 The competition results belong to people, and they are a decade old

Known limitation

The 2014 national barista final placing belongs to Nora Brady, a co-founder, and the 2015 South Central regional title to Radames Roldan; both are credited by name on this page. They are scored as indirect evidence of the capability of the people behind the company's coffee, never as an assessment of the coffee served at the bar, and no staff competition result has been published for this company since 2015.

🏙️ The Delmar Loop straddles a boundary — we checked which side

Known limitation

The Delmar bar carries a University City postal code, which put its jurisdiction in doubt. The City of St. Louis health department's own inspection register lists the address, which is how we established that the bar sits inside St. Louis city. We state the check rather than assuming the answer from a postal code.

🏭 Three bars and a separate roastery — scope disclosed

Known limitation

This award evaluates the founding Delmar bar. The company runs two other bars and roasts at a separate building at 1600 S 39th St, inside the city since 2024; before that it roasted at the Delmar bar itself. All four sites are named on this page so no reader has to guess which venue the award describes.

📰 One national outlet's coverage is cited nowhere here

Known limitation

Sprudge has reported on this company since 2013, but the publisher blocks automated capture, so we could not open those pieces at source and cite none of them. We mention this because a reader checking our sources should know that a body of national coverage exists which this page deliberately does not lean on.

🗺️ Scope disclosed — a metro field, not a census

Known limitation

The field screened was the St. Louis metropolitan area's independent, coffee-led venues, including St. Louis city, St. Louis County, St. Charles County and the Illinois side of the metro: 52 given a full evaluation, 20 more excluded on structural grounds or closure, and further businesses screened at sweep level. Our discovery method finds shops with a public evidence trail; an excellent shop with no web footprint is invisible to it, and "52 evaluated" is not a claim to have screened the whole metro.

🔎 Gate 2 adverse-signal pass — what the search returned, and its method

Known limitation

A Gate 2 adverse-signal search was run on 2026-09-19 for the winner (closures, lawsuits, labour disputes, ownership changes, health findings). It did not identify a substantiated finding affecting eligibility. The City of St. Louis inspection register was opened directly for the winner's city bars; the St. Louis County and St. Charles County portals refused every request, so no suburban venue's record was opened. This is a statement about what a documented search found on that date, with its method and its gaps stated, not a guarantee that nothing exists.

What We Didn't Do

CoffeeLabAdvisor does not conduct in-person shop visits. The verdict is based on the awarding body's own published lists, national specialist press opened at its source, a manufacturer's editorial partner story, an independent review programme's published scores, competition organisers' own results files, the City of St. Louis inspection register, local press, and the company's own published statements. We did not taste the coffee and did not assess current barista technique. Plant-based milk and drink pricing could not be verified from any published source, and both dimensions carry the insufficient-evidence default rather than a guess; closing that gap needs outreach or an in-store visit, and we say so rather than estimating. Sprudge has covered this company since 2013 but blocks automated capture, so none of its reporting is used as a source here. No adverse health, legal or labour finding concerning this business was identified in the sources we searched — a statement about a documented search on a date, not a guarantee. Blueprint Coffee has not undertaken CoffeeLab Verified status; shared documentation would resolve the menu, milk, pricing and grinder gaps firsthand.

Shops that share formal documentation confirming their equipment and sourcing claims (invoices, spec sheets, roaster agreements) carry the CoffeeLab Verified badge. Blueprint Coffee has not yet received one — shared documentation would confirm the equipment and roaster lineup firsthand.

Honorable Mentions

Award recognition is not a verdict on any other shop. The following are recognised in their own right, for what we found in their favour.

⭐ Honorable Mention — Goshen Coffee Roasters — Soulard Café

Recognised for the most decorated coffee record in CoffeeLabAdvisor's St. Louis evaluation — a Good Food Awards coffee winner in 2023 and again in 2024, each time for a single lot — and for staff who reached the 2025 and 2026 US Coffee Championships national finals in two disciplines. Open daily on Geyer Avenue since April 2022; the company roasts in Edwardsville, Illinois.

⭐ Honorable Mention — Kaldi's Coffee Roasting Co. — DeMun

Recognised for a Good Food Awards coffee win in 2015 and a US Coffee in Good Spirits national title won by a member of its staff in 2019, at one address on DeMun Avenue since 1994, with the company's roastery in St. Louis city. The DeMun café is in Clayton, a St. Louis suburb.

The winner is the candidate our documented-evidence screening selected for full scoring under the CoffeeLabAdvisor 2026 methodology, and the only candidate scored. Because the rest of the field was not scored, this award is not a quantitative ranking of the city and should not be read as one. An Honorable Mention is a recognition, not a placing: we do not rank the shops we did not score, and nothing on this page should be read as an assessment of any business other than the winner.

Priority placement in city guides, a dedicated shop profile page, and equipment affiliate links that can generate revenue for your shop.

A featured listing buys placement, never standing. It has no effect on award eligibility, on any score, on whether a shop is evaluated, or on the outcome of CoffeeLab Verified documentation review. Paid and unpaid shops are assessed identically.

Badge licensing disclosure. A recipient may optionally license the CoffeeLab Award badge artwork for commercial display. Licensing does not affect eligibility, evaluation, scoring, selection, or award status — this award was determined and published before any licence was offered, and a recipient who licenses nothing keeps the award, this page and its verification record unchanged. How badge licensing works.
