Best Coffee Shop in Olympia

Winner Olympia Coffee Roasting Co.

CoffeeLab Award 2026Coffee Shop of the Year

Downtown Olympia, 600 4th Ave E, Olympia, WA 98501 · Open since 2015 · The company lists cafés in South Olympia and West Olympia, Proctor in Tacoma, and Downtown and West Seattle, plus its Moonrise Bakery, on its own locations page. This award evaluates the downtown roastery café at 600 4th Ave E; the other cafés are named so the scope is unambiguous and are not separately awarded.

10 candidates screened · 1 fully scored · 4 independent sources on the winner from 4 publications (own-source material cited separately, never counted) · 22 across the field · 5 gates passed · Evaluated September 2026 · No visit, no tasting — documented evidence only

CoffeeLabAdvisor's Best Coffee Shop award is an evidence-led editorial selection under a published methodology — not a blind tasting or a sensory ranking. It names the venue with the strongest documented evidence under that methodology, scored across six equal dimensions. On that basis, Olympia Coffee Roasting Co. — Downtown roastery café, at 600 4th Ave E, where the company has roasted and served since 2015, receives this award, and receives it at Gold: the first venue in this programme to reach that tier. The evidence behind it is the strongest we have documented for any café. The company won two Good Food Awards for coffee in 2024, on a winners' list opened at the trade press, where it was "the only other roaster to win two awards"; it has published an itemised transparency report every year since 2018, listing the price paid for every coffee it buys; its co-owner is the 2023 United States Coffee in Good Spirits Champion and a roaster at this address is the 2023 United States Cup Tasters Champion, both reported by the trade press; and it has been at this address, roastery and café together, for more than ten years. Its own menu, captured from the company's ordering app, serves oat and almond milk at no charge on every espresso drink and size and prices an eight-ounce latte at $5.35, a double espresso at $3.95 and drip at $3.15, at the level of the one other Olympia café that publishes prices. Two facts belong beside the result. Two of the six dimensions are scored from what a venue's own menu documents, and for this award those two were placed by our researcher, not by an independent reviewer: the independent review we designed did not return placements, and we issued on our own. And the local price comparison rests on two current menus, because no other café in the city publishes its prices from any source of its own. Evidence scores measure the strength of documented evidence available for evaluation; they are not sensory scores, inspection scores, or direct measurements of current coffee quality. CoffeeLabAdvisor screened ten coffee businesses in the city of Olympia under its published coffee shop methodology, evaluated eight on documented evidence, captured every available menu from its own sources, and carried one venue through to a published six-dimension scorecard. We do not publish comparative scores for the rest of the field.

2026 is the inaugural year of CoffeeLab Awards. Our methodology evaluates the whole coffee journey — equipment, grinders, roasters, brands, and independent coffee shops — holistically, using the strongest publicly available specialist evidence we identify. We document our research and decision-making for every award, and we expect the methodology to evolve as we gain experience.

Award summary

Location

600 4th Ave E, Olympia, WA 98501 — the company's downtown roastery café at 600 4th Ave E — the address its own timeline records for 2015: "Roastery expands to 600 4th Ave., tripling in size. Adds a 23-kilo Gothot roaster." and "Downtown coffee bar relocates to 4th Ave." This award evaluates this one venue; the company's cafés in South and West Olympia, Tacoma and Seattle are named on this page and are not separately awarded.

Specialty Focus

A roastery café: the company roasts on the premises — a 70-kilo Loring installed in 2024 beside the Gothot it added in 2015 — and every espresso drink on the menu is a double shot of its Big Truck blend. Two of its coffees won Good Food Awards in 2024, including the category's only blended winner; it publishes the quantity, cupping score and price paid for every lot it buys in an annual transparency report; and its menu serves oat and almond milk at no charge on every espresso drink, with steamed plant milk on a drip priced the same as steamed dairy.

Award Category

Our flagship city award. An editorial selection: the independent coffee shop in the city that our documented-evidence screening selected for full scoring, carried through to a six-dimension scorecard. The rest of the field is screened but not scored, so the award is not a ranking of the city. The award level (Gold/Silver/Bronze) is an absolute score on that shop against the published rubric, not a placing against other businesses. This is an evidence-led editorial award, not a blind tasting or citywide sensory ranking: we do not score every eligible shop, and no claim is made that a winner would defeat every other shop in its city in a head-to-head tasting.

Award Level

Gold (90/100) — the tier follows the score: six equal-weighted dimensions totalling 540, averaging 90.00, rounded to 90 — the Gold threshold. Every figure on this page is a documentary-evidence score, not a sensory rating, and every score cites its evidence band — with each underlying fact scoring exactly once. Coffee Quality (93) sits in the independently documented band (90–100): two Good Food Awards coffee wins in 2024 on the awarding body's list as reported by the trade press, with earlier wins in 2014, 2016 and 2017 on the company's record, and the roastery at the awarded address; no independent writer has assessed this café itself, which is why the score is not higher. Sourcing & Transparency (95) rests on an itemised transparency report published every year since 2018 — country, coffee, quantity, cupping score, price paid, varietal and years of relationship for every lot — and on the company's B Corp certification; the report is self-published, and the score says so below. Barista & Ownership (90) rests on a co-owner who is the 2023 United States Coffee in Good Spirits Champion, reported by Barista Magazine, and a roaster at this address who is the 2023 United States Cup Tasters Champion; the 2024 Coffee in Good Spirits title rests on the company's own announcement and is not what the score turns on. Operational Consistency (90) rests on a company founded in the city in 2005, roastery and café at this address since 2015, and published hours; no independent report on this venue and no inspection record were obtained, which holds the score where it is. Plant-Based Milk (87) and Value (85) are scored from the venue's own menu, captured from the company's ordering app on 21 September 2026 — oat and almond at no charge on every espresso drink and size; latte $5.35, espresso $3.95, drip $3.15 against $5.50, $3.80 and $3.50 at the one other Olympia café that publishes prices — and were placed by our researcher, not by an independent reviewer. Scoring below.

Why Olympia Coffee Roasting Co. Won

Olympia Coffee is an independent, small-batch roaster dedicated to sourcing and roasting some of the world’s finest coffees.

— Olympia Coffee Roasting Co. — own site, captured 21 September 2026

Two Good Food Awards for Coffee in One Year, on the Awarding Body's List

The Good Food Awards judge coffee blind, and their winners' list is public. Daily Coffee News, reporting the 2024 results on 30 April 2024, wrote that "Olympia, Washington-based Olympia Coffee was the only other roaster to win two awards. One of those went to the coffee category’s lone blended winner (as opposed to a single-origin coffee), Olympia’s Little Buddy Blend." The list names both winning coffees — "Little Buddy Blend" and "Colombia Amparo Pajoy" — under "Olympia Coffee Roasting Co." The company's own timeline records earlier Good Food Awards in 2014, 2016 and 2017 and a 2020 finalist. A current, independently listed, cup-judged result is the strongest evidence this methodology recognises for coffee quality, and this company holds two of them from the same year, roasted at the address that receives this award.

A Transparency Report Every Year Since 2018, Down to the Price of Every Lot

The company's Fair For All programme states its practice plainly: "We publish the precise quantities and prices paid for all coffees in our annual transparency report." The 2025 report, which we opened in full, is a seventeen-page table — country, coffee name, quantity in pounds, cupping score, how it was sold, the FOB price paid, varietal and years of relationship — and states: "In 2024, our average price (FOB, or Free on Board) was $4.85." The previous year's figure is published too: "In 2023 our average (F.O.B.) was $4.54 per pound." The company became a Certified B Corporation in 2018 and Living Wage Certified in 2022. No other café in this evaluation publishes what it paid for its coffee. The report is self-published, and this page says so; what it documents is the most detailed sourcing record we have seen from any venue in the programme.

A Co-Owner Who Is a National Champion, Reported by the Trade Press

Barista Magazine, in a June 2023 interview with the new champion, wrote: "Sam Schroeder is co-owner and retail director for Olympia Coffee Roasting Co., and will compete for CIGS on the world stage in November." The company's own account of the same weekend adds the second title: "In the U.S. Coffee in Good Spirits Championship , Olympia Coffee co-founder Sam Schroeder took the top spot. And, in the U.S. Cup Tasters Championship , roaster and green coffee buyer Jake Donaghy nabbed first place with a perfect score sheet and the fastest time." A co-owner's national title in a coffee discipline, independently reported, and a roaster's national title earned by a person who works at this address, are the ownership and staff evidence this dimension asks for. The company states it is "an independent, small-batch roaster"; no page we opened identifies an investor, franchise or holding company.

Selected for Full Scoring on Documented Evidence

This award's claim is precise: among the Olympia coffee businesses we evaluated, Olympia Coffee's downtown roastery café was selected on the documented signals this methodology treats as relevant to a serious coffee programme — current cup-judged wins on the awarding body's list, lot-level sourcing published every year, a co-owner and a roaster with national titles, roastery and café at one address for more than a decade, and a published menu that treats plant milk as a core offering at no charge. It is not a claim that any other shop's coffee is inferior, and popularity metrics — review volume, reader polls, listing-site rankings — are recorded as context and scored nowhere.

Evidence Scorecard

Each score rates the strength of the publicly documented evidence we found for that dimension — not first-hand testing. We did not visit this shop or taste its coffee. That is our standard evaluation tier, defined in the methodology; hands-on assessment belongs to CoffeeLab Verified, which this shop has not undertaken.

Overall: 90/100 — Gold. Six equal-weighted dimensions per our venue awards methodology; Gold is the absolute-rubric tier for this score, not a placing against other shops.

How to read these scores

"Coffee Shop of the Year" names the candidate our documented evidence and specialist-signal screening selected for full scoring — it is an editorial selection, not the output of scoring every shop in the city against each other. An evidence score does not represent a current sensory rating; it reflects the strength, independence and recency of the documentation available under this programme's rubric.

What Operational Consistency measures: sustained operation and a stable, documented offer over time — longevity, continuity at the awarded address, and documented continuity of operation over time. It is not a measurement of shot-to-shot consistency in the cup, which would require in-person testing we do not perform.

What the Specialist Community Says

Unlike general review aggregation, we grounded this in independent, named, checkable sources rather than anonymous review excerpts:

Olympia Coffee Roasting Co. — own ordering app (Downtown Olympia pickup), Sep 2026

Key signals: Daily Coffee News's report of the 2024 Good Food Awards coffee winners, naming both of the company's winning coffees; Barista Magazine's June 2023 interview with the co-owner as the new United States Coffee in Good Spirits Champion; the company's own press page on the 2023 double win and its April 2024 announcement of a second Coffee in Good Spirits title; its Fair For All page and 2025 Transparency Report; and its own story, locations and downtown-café pages. Honesty notes, because they matter more than the signals: no specialist coffee writer's assessment of this café itself could be captured — the one national coffee outlet that has covered the Olympia scene blocks automated capture, so it is cited nowhere on this page — and the 2024 Coffee in Good Spirits title rests on the company's own announcement, so the score does not turn on it. Coffee Quality is scored on the judged results and stops short of the top of its band for want of an independent assessment of the venue.

Their Equipment Setup

Documented from the company's own timeline: founded in 2005 "with a 12-kilo Diedrich roaster"; the 2015 move to this address, "Adds a 23-kilo Gothot roaster."; and in 2024, "Installs an energy-efficient 70-kilo Loring roaster, increasing capacity while reducing energy consumption." Documented from the café's own ordering app: every espresso drink is built on a double shot of the Big Truck blend, and syrups are listed by name. The espresso machine and grinders in the café are not named on any page we could open, and this page does not guess.

We do not earn commission on café equipment: professional bar machines are not sold through our affiliate programme, and nothing in this section is a product recommendation. If you want home equipment evaluated on the same evidence standard, see our Best Overall Espresso Machine award or Best Overall Burr Grinder award.

Plant-Based Milk

☕☕☕☕☕Excellent

Evidenced from the venue's own ordering app, captured on 21 September 2026 for the downtown café. On the latte and the cappuccino the milk list reads Whole Milk, Low Fat Milk, Nonfat Milk, "Oat Milk", "Almond Milk" — none carrying a surcharge — with "Breve + $1.15" the only priced option. Two plant milks, free on every espresso drink and every size. On a straight espresso and on a drip, a splash of oat or almond milk is likewise free, and steamed milk added to a drip is one price, $0.90, whether dairy or plant. The dimension is scored 87 — placed by our researcher from the menu evidence — and the plant milks are not house-made, which is where the score stops.

Known Limitations

No coffee shop is perfect, and no award page should pretend otherwise. We publish these honestly so you can make an informed decision.

🧭 An evidence-led selection, not a sensory verdict

Known limitation

This award names the venue with the strongest documented evidence under a published methodology. It is not a blind tasting and not a sensory ranking: we did not visit, did not taste, and make no claim about what is in the cup today. Every figure on this page rates the strength of documented evidence available for evaluation. We choose documented, repeatable, auditable evidence over unrepeatable impressions, and this disclosure is the cost of that choice.

🧮 Two of six dimensions were placed by our researcher, not by an independent reviewer

Known limitation

Plant-Based Milk and Value are scored from what a venue's own menu documents. For this award we designed an independent review in which a reviewer, shown four Olympia menus with no names and no sight of our reasoning, would place those two dimensions and we would adopt the placements as given. The reviewer twice returned an assessment of the review's design and no placements, and we closed the review and issued on our researcher's placements — 87 and 85 — which were written before that review began and were not changed afterwards. The result is Gold by three points on those two dimensions; a reader should weigh that margin knowing who placed them.

⚖️ The local price comparison rests on two current menus

Known limitation

Value is price against the documented preparation standard for the local market. Of the Olympia cafés we evaluated, only the winner and one other publish their drink prices from any source of their own — the rest have no menu online, or a menu without prices, or a menu last updated in 2021. Eight further attempts found nothing more. The winner's prices are therefore compared with one current local menu, and the placement is made on that basis and disclosed as such.

🗺️ The city was research-selected, and the method is disclosed

Known limitation

Olympia was not chosen at random. It was selected because published evidence about its leading roaster — judged results, a transparency record, national titles — was unusually dense, after a menu pre-check that a different city did not pass. We record that plainly: the selection method points toward cities with strong documented evidence, and this award should be read as the result of that method rather than of a survey of comparable cities.

📰 No independent writer has assessed this café itself

Known limitation

The strongest independent evidence here is the trade press reporting judged results and a competition title — evidence about the company's coffee and its people, not a visiting writer's account of this room, its bar or its service. The one national coffee outlet that has covered Olympia blocks automated capture, so it is cited nowhere on this page. Coffee Quality is scored on the judged results and stops short of the top of its band for want of that assessment.

🏅 The 2024 Coffee in Good Spirits title rests on the company's own announcement

Known limitation

The 2023 titles — the co-owner's Coffee in Good Spirits championship and the roaster's Cup Tasters championship — are reported by Barista Magazine and are what Barista & Ownership turns on. The company also announced a second Coffee in Good Spirits title in April 2024; we did not find that result in an independent file we could open, so it is recorded from the company's announcement and the score does not depend on it.

📋 The transparency report is self-published

Known limitation

The itemised report behind Sourcing & Transparency is the company's own document. The company is certified by B Lab; the report itself is not audited by a third party we could identify. We score it as the most detailed published sourcing record in this evaluation, and we say whose document it is.

🏭 The awarded venue is one of the company's several cafés — scope disclosed

Known limitation

The award is made to the downtown roastery café at 600 4th Ave E, where the company roasts, not to Olympia Coffee Roasting Co. as a company. The company's other cafés — in South and West Olympia, Tacoma and Seattle — and its bakery are named on this page from its own locations list and are not separately awarded. The roasting, sourcing and competition evidence belongs to the company and transfers to this venue because the roastery is on the premises.

🔎 No inspection record, and an adverse-signal search with its method stated

Known limitation

No health-inspection record was obtained for any venue in this evaluation, so none is claimed. A search for adverse signals (closures, lawsuits, labour disputes, ownership changes, health findings) was run for the winner on 21 September 2026 across the local and trade press and the company's own pages; it identified none affecting eligibility. This is a statement about what a documented search found on that date, with its gaps stated, not a guarantee that nothing exists.

🧾 Scope disclosed — one city, not a census

Known limitation

The field evaluated was the city of Olympia's independent, coffee-led venues: ten coffee businesses screened, eight evaluated in depth on documented evidence, four menus captured from own sources, and one carried through to a published scorecard. Lacey and Tumwater are separate cities and were not evaluated for this award. Our discovery method finds shops with a public evidence trail; an excellent shop with no web footprint is invisible to it.

What We Didn't Do

CoffeeLabAdvisor does not conduct in-person shop visits. The verdict is based on the company's own published pages, transparency report and ordering-app menu, the trade press opened at its source, the awarding bodies' lists as the trade press reported them, and the menus of Olympia cafés captured from each café's own site or app. We did not taste the coffee and did not assess current barista technique. We could not obtain an inspection record, could not open the one national coffee outlet that has covered the city, and could capture published prices for only two Olympia cafés, the winner and one more. The two menu dimensions were placed by our researcher; the independent review we designed for them did not return placements. Prices are from the ordering app of 21 September 2026; if the menu changes, the placements are restated.

Shops that share formal documentation confirming their equipment and sourcing claims (invoices, spec sheets, roaster agreements) carry the CoffeeLab Verified badge. Olympia Coffee Roasting Co. has not yet received one — shared documentation would confirm the equipment and roaster lineup firsthand.

Honorable Mentions

Award recognition is not a verdict on any other shop. The following are recognised in their own right, for what we found in their favour.

⭐ Honorable Mention — Rhythms Coffee

Recognised for a notable published menu — oat milk offered as a milk of choice with no surcharge, and required in two of its signature drinks; an eight-ounce drip at $3.50 and a latte at $5.50 — serving a named local roaster, Blossom Coffee Roasters, from its downtown café on 4th Avenue.

⭐ Honorable Mention — Papaver Roaster House

Recognised as an owner-operated roastery café with the clearest roasting identity in the field after the winner — "Founded and run by husband and wife team, David and Elona," in the city's own coffee-trail account, roasting light on a Loring with every batch checked by sensory evaluation and colorimeter, as its own site describes.

The winner is the candidate our documented-evidence screening selected for full scoring under the CoffeeLabAdvisor 2026 methodology, and the only candidate scored. Because the rest of the field was not scored, this award is not a quantitative ranking of the city and should not be read as one. An Honorable Mention is a recognition, not a placing: we do not rank the shops we did not score, and nothing on this page should be read as an assessment of any business other than the winner.
