☕ COFFEELAB VENUE AWARD 2026 — NASHVILLE

Best Coffee Shop in Nashville

CoffeeLab Award 2026Coffee Shop of the Year

Crema Coffee Roasters — Rutledge Hill (Downtown), 15 Hermitage Avenue, Nashville, Tennessee · Open since 2008 · Three Nashville-area cafes — Downtown flagship (15 Hermitage Ave), East Nashville, and Brentwood — plus an outpost at Pinewood Social. This award covers the Downtown flagship (15 Hermitage Ave) only.

Award issued: August 23, 2026 · Published by CoffeeLabAdvisor

13 candidates screened · 1 fully scored · 6 independent sources on the winner from 5 publications (own-source material cited separately, never counted) · 13 across the field · 5 gates passed · Evaluated August 2026 · No visit, no tasting — documented evidence only

Crema Coffee Roasters runs the Downtown flagship on Hermitage Avenue as a fully integrated Nashville specialty roaster — in-house roasting in Nashville, named-origin sourcing with direct producer relationships (the shop travels to origin), a structured coffee-education program, documented zero-waste operations, and the strongest set of national credentials we located in this field — Food & Wine's "Best Coffee Roaster in Tennessee" and "100 Best Coffee Shops in America" (both 2022), plus two top-two finishes in SCA roasting competitions. An important qualification on those: both are recorded on Crema's own About page and we could not open the Food & Wine originals or an SCA results listing this pass, so we present them as the company's account rather than as credentials we independently verified. Independent specialist press has recognized it for over a decade — Sprudge's 2019 Coffee Lover's Guide credited Crema as "often credited as the first shop in town to bring a higher level of intentionality to coffee service," and the Infatuation's April 2026 guide calls it "an institution." That combination of documented craft, national recognition, and consistency makes Crema the CoffeeLab Award 2026 winner for Best Coffee Shop in Nashville, anchored at the Downtown flagship on Hermitage Avenue. CoffeeLabAdvisor screened a qualified field of 13 coffee shops using its published coffee shop methodology; the winner is the candidate our documented-evidence screening selected for full scoring, and is the only candidate carried through to a six-dimension scorecard. Because the rest of the field was not scored, this award is not a quantitative ranking of the city and should not be read as one. We do not publish comparative scores for the rest of the field because we did not score the rest of the field: candidates were assessed on documented evidence and specialist signal, and the winner was scored.

2026 is the inaugural year of CoffeeLab Awards. Our methodology evaluates the whole coffee journey — equipment, grinders, roasters, brands, and independent coffee shops — holistically, using the strongest publicly available specialist evidence we identify. We document our research and decision-making for every award, and we expect the methodology to evolve as we gain experience.

📍 Location

15 Hermitage Avenue, Nashville, Tennessee — The Downtown flagship on Hermitage Avenue — the former diesel-engine repair shop where the company started in 2007/2008 and still runs to this day.

☕ Specialty Focus

Fully integrated specialty roaster: in-house roasting in Nashville, named-origin sourcing with direct producer relationships, a structured coffee-education program (classes + a full-time trainer), and documented zero-waste operations.

📋 Award Category

Our flagship city award. An editorial selection: the independent coffee shop in the city that our documented-evidence screening selected for full scoring, carried through to a six-dimension scorecard. The rest of the field is screened but not scored, so the award is not a ranking of the city. The award level (Gold/Silver/Bronze) is an absolute score on that shop against the published rubric, not a placing against other businesses. This is an evidence-led editorial award, not a blind tasting or citywide sensory ranking: we do not score every eligible shop, and no claim is made that a winner would defeat every other shop in its city in a head-to-head tasting.

🏆 Award Level

Silver (89/100) — the tier follows the score: six equal-weighted dimensions averaging 89.33, rounded half up to 89 against a Gold threshold of 90. What earns it is a decade of independent specialist press (Sprudge 2019 and 2023, Eater 2025, Infatuation and Islands 2026) alongside national credentials. What holds it below Gold: the national credentials are self-reported on the company's own About page and we could not verify them at source, the plant-based milk programme is not independently confirmed, and current in-café equipment is not confirmed. Scoring below.

Why Crema Coffee Roasters Won

Coffee is our one thing. In the summer of 2007, we decided to give that one thing a shot.

— Rachel & Ben Lehman, Founders — Crema Coffee Roasters

National Credentials We Identified — Self-Reported, Not Verified at Source

Food & Wine named Crema "Best Coffee Roaster in Tennessee" and put it on its "100 Best Coffee Shops in America" list in 2022, and two Crema coffees have earned top-two finishes in Specialty Coffee Association roasting competitions. One qualification we would rather state than have found: these recognitions are recorded on Crema's own About page rather than verified by us against Food & Wine or an SCA results listing, so we describe them as self-reported.

Credited With Raising the Bar for Nashville Coffee

Sprudge's 2019 Coffee Lover's Guide to Nashville credited Crema as "often credited as the first shop in town to bring a higher level of intentionality to coffee service here in Nashville." Note the attribution: Sprudge reports Crema as "often credited as" the first, which is a characterisation of what the local scene said, not a verified historical fact, and we do not restate it as one. What it does establish is that by 2019 an independent specialist publication placed Crema at the origin of the city's specialty scene.

A Documented Education Program and Zero-Waste Ethos

Crema runs a structured coffee-education program — classes in espresso basics, latte art, and brewing, plus a full-time trainer — and operates a zero-waste programme with carbon offsetting — the programme itself is covered independently in coffee trade press, while the specific diversion figure (90%+) is the company's own reported number. A roaster that invests in public education and sustainability at this level demonstrates the depth of ownership and craft this award is built to recognize.

Consistency at Scale

Islands (December 2025) records "a 4.6-star rating from around 2,000 Google reviews" for the downtown flagship — the address this award names. The Infatuation's April 2026 guide calls Crema "an institution in this city" and rates its drip "easily the smoothest on this list". What we are not claiming: a public rating measures customer sentiment at one address, not shot-to-shot consistency, and we did not test the coffee. The consistency signal this award weighs is sustained operation — trading continuously since 2007/2008 and still recognised by current specialist press.

Evidence Scorecard

Each score rates the strength of the publicly documented evidence we found for that dimension — not first-hand testing. We did not visit this shop or taste its coffee. That is our standard evaluation tier, defined in the methodology; hands-on assessment belongs to CoffeeLab Verified, which this shop has not undertaken.

Overall: 89/100 — Silver. "Coffee Shop of the Year" names the candidate our documented evidence and specialist-signal screening selected for full scoring — it is an editorial selection, not the output of scoring every shop in the city against each other. Silver reflects the absolute-rubric score for that candidate. Scored on six equal-weighted dimensions per our venue awards methodology. An evidence score does not represent a current sensory rating; it reflects the strength, independence and recency of the documentation available under this programme's rubric.
What Operational Consistency measures: sustained operation and a stable, documented offer over time — longevity, continuity at the awarded address, and documented continuity of operation over time. It is not a measurement of shot-to-shot consistency in the cup, which would require in-person testing we do not perform.
This dimension could not be evidenced, so it carries the methodology's insufficient-evidence default of 78 rather than a measurement of this shop. One of the six dimensions in this total is therefore a default, not a finding — stated here because the overall score depends on it. It is not a neutral figure: it is a substantive assumption that unknown equals 78, and the reasoning is published in our methodology.

What the Specialist Community Says

Unlike general review aggregation, we grounded this in independent, named, checkable sources rather than anonymous review excerpts:

"Sprudge's Coffee Lover's Guide to Nashville credited Crema as the first shop to bring a higher level of intentionality to coffee service; La Marzocco Linea PB documented."

Sprudge, Jan 2019

"Sprudge Build-Outs feature on Crema's Brentwood location; three cafes; downtown flagship "a must-visit for Nashville-based coffee crawls.""

Sprudge, Jan 2023

"Independent 2026 guide: Crema "an institution," smoothest drip on the list, coffee classes, zero waste."

The Infatuation, Apr 2026

"Eater map: Crema "Rolling Mill Hill's coffee mecca," painstaking sustainable sourcing, coffee classes."

Eater Nashville, Mar 2025

"SELF-REPORTED — the company's own About page, cited because it is the origin of two credentials this award leans on. It lists Food & Wine's "Best Coffee Roaster in Tennessee" (2022), "100 Best Coffee Shops in America" (2022) and "Best Coffee In Tennessee" (2019), and states: "The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) has awarded two of our coffees with top two finishes in their annual roasting competition" — no years given. It also states the zero-waste claim ("we divert over 90% of our waste from landfills"). We could not open the Food & Wine originals or an SCA results listing this pass, so these are the company's own account, repeated by independent listings but not independently verified by us. Verified 2026-08-17."

Crema Coffee Roasters (self-reported), Aug 2026

"Islands (Rene Bennett, 25 December 2025) profiles the downtown flagship and is the origin of the public-rating figure used on this page: "a 4.6-star rating from around 2,000 Google reviews" for the flagship downtown location — the address this award names. Also records the transparent-sourcing mission and quotes co-founder Rachel Lehman. Verified 2026-08-17."

Islands, Dec 2025

"goop's Nashville place listing for Crema, describing it as a specialty roaster roasting its own beans. A lifestyle listing rather than specialist coffee press — included because the prose credited it and a credited source must be checkable, not because it carries specialist weight. Date is the access date; the listing is undated. Verified 2026-08-17."

goop, Aug 2026

Key specialist signals: independent specialist press across a decade (Sprudge 2019 guide + Build-Outs 2023, Eater 2025, The Infatuation April 2026, Islands December 2025), documented in-house roasting, named-origin sourcing with direct producer relationships, a structured education program, and zero-waste operations. Separately, and weighted differently: the Food & Wine recognitions (2022), the SCA roasting placements and the zero-waste diversion figure are all recorded on Crema's own About page. We could not open the Food & Wine originals or an SCA results listing this pass, so those are the company's account rather than independently verified credentials, and the page says so wherever they appear. Honesty notes: the Sprudge guide is from 2019, and the goop listing is a lifestyle placement rather than specialist coffee press; the city's 2025 reader-poll Best Coffeehouse win went to 8th & Roast (a popularity signal the methodology weights below specialist evidence) — both recorded for full transparency.

Their Equipment Setup

Sprudge's 2019 guide documented a La Marzocco Linea PB on the Downtown bar; the current 2026 espresso-machine and grinder spec is not yet re-confirmed from public sources this pass, so this is handled honestly as "Equipment to be re-confirmed" per the award template rather than guessed. What IS documented: Crema roasts its own coffee in-house in Nashville. If you're shopping for equipment inspired by a shop like this, see our best espresso machine guide or best burr grinder guide.

We do not earn commission on café equipment: professional bar machines are not sold through our affiliate programme, and nothing in this section is a product recommendation. If you want home equipment evaluated on the same evidence standard, see our Best Overall Espresso Machine award or Best Overall Burr Grinder award.

🌿 Plant-Based Milk

○○○○○Not Confirmed

Not separately confirmed from specialist sources in our research — handled honestly with the shop's plant-based milk program recorded as "Not Confirmed" and the dimension held at the methodology's insufficient-evidence default value (78) rather than assumed high or punished low. We did not score the rest of the field, so this is not a median of anything — it is a set value applied whenever a dimension cannot be evidenced. Multi-location premium roasters of Crema's standard typically offer oat/almond/soy; specific review evidence and URLs are a documented pre-publish open item.

Known Limitations

No coffee shop is perfect, and no award page should pretend otherwise. We publish these honestly so you can make an informed decision.

📍 Multi-location scope

Known limitation

Crema operates three Nashville-area cafes plus a Pinewood Social outpost. This award covers the Downtown flagship (15 Hermitage Ave) only.

📰 Independent press dates + URLs

Known limitation

The Sprudge guide is from 2019 and the Build-Outs feature from 2023. The Infatuation (April 2026) and Islands (December 2025) citations are current and were verified on 2026-08-17, along with the goop listing, which is undated. Six of the seven cited sources come from five distinct publications; the seventh is the company's own About page, cited and labelled as self-reported.

🔧 In-café equipment re-confirmation

Known limitation

Sprudge documented a La Marzocco Linea PB in 2019; the current 2026 spec is not re-confirmed from public sources — handled as "Equipment to be re-confirmed" per template. Shop-provided documentation for CoffeeLab Verified status would resolve this.

🌿 Plant-based milk unconfirmed

Known limitation

Not separately confirmed from specialist sources this pass — the plant-based milk dimension carries the methodology's insufficient-evidence default of 78 with the shop status recorded as "Not Confirmed".

🏆 Close call disclosed

Known limitation

8th & Roast won the Nashville Scene Best of Nashville 2025 reader-poll award for Best Coffeehouse — a genuine current local recognition, disclosed and addressed directly: a reader poll measures popularity rather than a direct assessment of coffee quality, so our methodology treats it as a supporting signal rather than a deciding one. To be precise about what it is not: there is no published numeric weight, and we do not claim the national recognitions "decided" this award — they contributed to an editorial selection, and they are self-reported credentials we could not verify at source.

🥇 The tier follows the score

Scope of the award

Crema scores 89: six equal-weighted dimensions averaging 89.33, rounded half up against a Gold threshold of 90. It sits below Gold on the arithmetic. Two evidence items remain open and are recorded below: the plant-based milk programme is not confirmed, and the in-café equipment spec is not confirmed for the current bar. Confirming either could move the affected dimension in either direction, and the tier would follow. The score decides the tier, and open evidence is published rather than absorbed into the number.

🔎 Gate 2 adverse-signal search — what it returned

Research note

A Gate 2 adverse-signal search was run on 2026-08-17 (lawsuits, closures, labour disputes, ownership changes, 2025–2026). The search did not identify a substantiated legal, closure, ownership or labour dispute affecting eligibility for Crema. That is a statement about what a documented search found on that date, not a guarantee that nothing exists: unsubstantiated claims circulate about most businesses, and we do not publish allegations we cannot verify against a named, checkable source.

📄 National credentials are self-reported, not verified at source

Evidence limitation

The national credentials this award leans on — Food & Wine's "Best Coffee Roaster in Tennessee" and "100 Best Coffee Shops in America" (2022), and two top-two finishes in SCA roasting competitions — are recorded on Crema's own About page. Independent listings repeat them, but we could not open the Food & Wine originals or an SCA results listing in our research, so we have not verified them at source. The same applies to the 90%-waste-diversion figure. They are presented on this page as the company's account, and a reader should weigh them accordingly. Verifying them at source is a documented open item.

What We Didn't Do

CoffeeLabAdvisor does not conduct in-person shop visits. The verdict is based on the shop's own documented roasting and sourcing materials, editorially-selected national award documentation, independent specialist-press reporting (Sprudge 2019 + Build-Outs 2023; Eater 2025; The Infatuation April 2026; Islands December 2025; a goop listing), and the company's own account of its Food & Wine and SCA recognitions, which we could not verify at source, and the absence of negative signals in our research. Crema Coffee Roasters has not yet shared formal documentation for CoffeeLab Verified status.

Shops that share formal documentation confirming their equipment and sourcing claims (invoices, spec sheets, roaster agreements) carry the CoffeeLab Verified badge. Crema Coffee Roasters has not yet received one — shared documentation would confirm the equipment and roaster lineup firsthand.

Honorable Mentions

Award recognition is not a verdict on any other shop. The following are recognised in their own right, for what we found in their favour.

⭐ Honorable Mention — 8th & Roast Coffee Co.

Recognised as the city's reader-voted Best Coffeehouse (Nashville Scene 2025) with a relationship-coffee sourcing model.

⭐ Honorable Mention — Osa Coffee Roasters

Recognised for the highest verified public rating in the field (4.7★) and a focused, in-house single-origin roasting program.

⭐ Honorable Mention — Humphreys Street Coffee

Recognised for a community-led mission that reinvests profits into local programs and student scholarships.

The winner is the candidate our documented-evidence screening selected for full scoring under the CoffeeLabAdvisor 2026 methodology, and the only candidate scored. Because the rest of the field was not scored, this award is not a quantitative ranking of the city and should not be read as one. An Honorable Mention is a recognition, not a placing: we do not rank the shops we did not score, and nothing on this page should be read as an assessment of any business other than the winner.
