☕ COFFEELAB VENUE AWARD 2026 — KANSAS CITY
Oddly Correct Coffee Roasters — Troost Avenue, 4141 Troost Ave, Kansas City, MO 64110 · Open since 2012 · One cafe: the roastery-cafe at 4141 Troost Ave. The business record runs to 2008 (roasting) and 2012 (cafe); the record at this address begins in 2021.
Oddly Correct Coffee Roasters runs its roastery-cafe on Troost Avenue as a long-documented independent specialty-coffee operation — founded by Gregory Kolsto in 2008 as a garage roasting operation, serving the city from its own coffee bar since 2012, and roasting its coffee in-house at the awarded address since 2021 — an in-house roastery-cafe record whose documented depth no other eligible candidate in our screening matched. Among the candidates we screened, it had the deepest documented specialist record we identified: multiple Sprudge features, a finalist appearance in Sprudge's Sprudgie Awards (Sustainable Cafe category, 11th Annual), and an assessment by a Sprudge co-founder writing in Kansas City magazine. CoffeeLabAdvisor screened a qualified field of 20 candidates using its published coffee shop methodology; the winner is the candidate our documented-evidence screening selected for full scoring, and the only candidate carried through to a full six-dimension scorecard. We do not publish comparative scores for the rest of the field because we did not score the rest of the field.
4141 Troost Ave, Kansas City, MO 64110 — The roastery-cafe at 4141 Troost Ave — roasting and bar under one roof since 2021, within a business record that runs to 2008.
Roasts its coffee in-house at the awarded address. An 18-year founder-led record: garage roastery (2008), Main Street coffee bar (2012), Troost Avenue roastery-cafe (2021). The shop's stated ethos: "striving for equity for all who work to bring coffee from seed to cup."
Our flagship city award. An editorial selection: the independent coffee shop in the city that our documented-evidence screening selected for full scoring, carried through to a six-dimension scorecard. The rest of the field is screened but not scored, so the award is not a ranking of the city. The award level (Gold/Silver/Bronze) is an absolute score on that shop against the published rubric, not a placing against other businesses. This is an evidence-led editorial award, not a blind tasting or citywide sensory ranking: we do not score every eligible shop, and no claim is made that a winner would defeat every other shop in its city in a head-to-head tasting.
Silver (86/100) — the tier follows the score: six equal-weighted dimensions totalling 515, averaging 85.83, rounded half up to 86 against a Gold threshold of 90. Every figure on this page is a documentary-evidence score, not a sensory rating. Coffee Quality is scored 87, within our band for older results (86–90): a specialist critic assessed the coffee directly in 2020 — "some of the city's best hand-brewed coffee" — but no specialist source has assessed it since, and that assessment pre-dates the current room. Sourcing & Transparency is scored 81, low in the own-materials band, because the documented sourcing evidence is the shop's own equity ethos and its roaster-to-bar chain — no named producers or importers. Barista & Ownership is scored 87 on documented ownership continuity; we have no independent measure of barista technique, and say so below. Plant-based milk and value are scored from the shop's own published cafe page and menu, captured 2026-08-26; the menu's July 2024 dating is disclosed below. Scoring below.
We're working to create context for people to discover and appreciate coffee as a unique and wonderful beverage while striving for equity for all who work to bring coffee from seed to cup.
Oddly Correct roasts its coffee in-house, with roastery and bar under one roof on Troost Avenue since 2021. Among the eligible candidates our screening identified, it pairs that in-house discipline with the longest documented operating record — a statement about what our documented-evidence screening found, not an assertion about every shop in the city. That is a legible quality discipline rather than a claim about taste — we did not taste the coffee, so it is the discipline we are recognising, not a verdict on the cup.
Gregory Kolsto began roasting in 2008 — a 2.5-kilo Ambex in a garage, deliveries by bicycle, hand-drawn bags — opened the Main Street coffee bar in 2012, and moved roastery and cafe under one roof on Troost in 2021. Founder-run continuity is documented at multiple points across that whole arc, from the letterpress design identity of the early years to the shop's own current statement of purpose. Continuity of that length, documented rather than claimed, is the backbone of this award's Operational Consistency and Barista & Ownership evidence.
Oddly Correct was a FINALIST in Sprudge's 11th Annual Sprudgie Awards — Sustainable Cafe category (announced January 2020), alongside cafes from Berlin and Los Angeles. We state "finalist" deliberately: several third-party sites misreport this as a win, and it was not one. It has also been featured by Sprudge across the 2013–2014 build-out era, and assessed in Kansas City magazine (April 2020) by a critic who co-founded Sprudge, whose verdict reached the cup itself: Oddly had "settled into a comfortable identity as a handsome, busy neighborhood coffee bar with […] some of the city's best hand-brewed coffee."
This award is an editorial selection under a disclosed methodology, and the claim it makes is precise: among the independently owned Kansas City coffee shops we screened, Oddly Correct was selected for full scoring on documented evidence of roasting expertise, specialty-coffee history, specialist recognition, and current operation — supported by the shop's published August 2026 hours. It is not a claim that any other shop's coffee is inferior, and specialist trade coverage is treated as evidence of reputation and documented practice, not as a measurement of what is in the cup.
Each score rates the strength of the publicly documented evidence we found for that dimension — not first-hand testing. We did not visit this shop or taste its coffee. That is our standard evaluation tier, defined in the methodology; hands-on assessment belongs to CoffeeLab Verified, which this shop has not undertaken.
Overall: 86/100 — Silver. "Coffee Shop of the Year" names the candidate our documented evidence and specialist-signal screening selected for full scoring — it is an editorial selection, not the output of scoring every shop in the city against each other. Silver reflects the absolute-rubric score for that candidate. Scored on six equal-weighted dimensions per our venue awards methodology. An evidence score does not represent a current sensory rating; it reflects the strength, independence and recency of the documentation available under this programme's rubric.
What Operational Consistency measures: sustained operation and a stable, documented offer over time — longevity, continuity at the awarded address, and documented continuity of operation over time. It is not a measurement of shot-to-shot consistency in the cup, which would require in-person testing we do not perform.
Unlike general review aggregation, we grounded this in independent, named, checkable sources rather than anonymous review excerpts:

Key specialist signals: a direct 2020 coffee-quality assessment by a Sprudge co-founder in Kansas City magazine ("some of the city's best hand-brewed coffee"), a Sprudgie Awards FINALIST appearance (Sustainable Cafe, 11th Annual, announced January 2020 — finalist, not winner, and a sustainability recognition rather than a coffee-quality result), multiple Sprudge features from the shop's build-out era, and an 18-year documented operating arc from garage roastery to roastery-cafe. Honesty notes, because they matter more than the signals: the strongest specialist assessments date from 2013–2020, and our research found no specialist coffee-press coverage of Oddly Correct from 2025–2026 — continuity to the current year is supported by the shop's own published hours rather than by fresh third-party assessment, and the 2020 assessment pre-dates the shop's 2021 move to Troost, so no published specialist assessment describes the current room. We have no independent measure of barista technique — no competition placements and no visit — so the Barista & Ownership dimension rests on documented ownership continuity, not on technique. And the shop's sourcing evidence is its own stated ethos and its roaster-to-bar chain: no named producers or importers are documented, which is why Sourcing & Transparency is scored low in the own-materials band.
Current in-cafe equipment is not confirmed from public sources — handled honestly as "Equipment not confirmed" per the award template rather than guessed. What 2020 reporting documented at the shop's previous Main Street location: a custom Slayer Espresso machine and a pour-over bar of Yama brewers (Kansas City magazine, April 2020) — but that pre-dates the 2021 move, so the current Troost lineup is not established. What IS current: Oddly Correct roasts in-house at this address, a practice running back to its 2008 garage-roastery origins. If you're shopping for home equipment evaluated on the same evidence standard, see our Best Overall Espresso Machine award or Best Overall Burr Grinder award.
We do not earn commission on café equipment: professional bar machines are not sold through our affiliate programme, and nothing in this section is a product recommendation. If you want home equipment evaluated on the same evidence standard, see our Best Overall Espresso Machine award or Best Overall Burr Grinder award.
Confirmed from the shop's own published sources, captured 2026-08-26. The cafe page states that dairy alternatives are free of charge, and the shop's published menu (PDF) states: "all drinks come with choice of whole milk, oat milk or macadamia milk at no additional charge." Free plant-based alternatives on every drink is an uncommonly strong program — most specialty shops in our fields charge an upcharge. The menu file is hosted at a July 2024 upload path; the free-of-charge statement also appears on the current cafe page. Both documents are also listed, with their capture dates, under What the Specialist Community Says.
No coffee shop is perfect, and no award page should pretend otherwise. We publish these honestly so you can make an informed decision.
Oddly Correct's Sprudge features date from 2013–2014, its Sprudgie finalist appearance from the awards announced in January 2020, and the Kansas City magazine assessment from April 2020. Our research found no specialist coffee-press coverage from 2025–2026. Continuity to the current year is evidenced by the shop's own published hours and operating status, not by fresh third-party assessment — and the 2020 assessment pre-dates the shop's 2021 move to its current Troost Avenue room. An award dated 2026 resting on 2013–2020 specialist evidence is the single fairest criticism of this award, and we would rather state it than have a reader discover it.
Plant-based milk and value are scored from shop-controlled sources: the current cafe page ("dairy alternatives are free of charge") and the shop's published menu ("all drinks come with choice of whole milk, oat milk or macadamia milk at no additional charge"), both captured 2026-08-26. The menu file is hosted at a July 2024 upload path, so its prices are the shop's most recently published rather than certified-current figures; the value score carries that dating, and both scores sit within our evidence band for a subject's own materials rather than above it.
Value is an evidence-based assessment of documented menu pricing, not a firsthand assessment of price-to-quality value. It is scored from the shop's own published menu (captured 2026-08-26): drip coffee $2.75, espresso $3.25, cappuccino $3.75, latte $4.75, pour-over $5.50, with free plant-based alternatives included. These prices fall within the programme's documented specialty-coffee price range, although the source menu is dated July 2024. The menu is hosted at a July 2024 upload path: these are the shop's most recently published prices, not prices we certified as current in August 2026, and the score is held within the own-materials evidence band partly for that reason. If current prices differ, we will correct and restate.
Oddly Correct's 2021 relocation to Troost Avenue generated significant public discussion, including concerns raised by nearby businesses and community members about the move and its communication. The owners subsequently acknowledged shortcomings in the initial communication and engaged with neighboring businesses and community leaders. We disclose this history because it is material context about the business; we do not use it as a coffee-quality factor. The adverse-signal search is reported separately below.
The espresso machine and grinder lineup is not confirmed from public sources in this pass. Shop-provided documentation for CoffeeLab Verified status would resolve it.
This award evaluates the independent coffee shops of Kansas City, Missouri city proper; the metro's Kansas-side and suburban shops sit outside its scope. For this award, "independent" means not owned or controlled by a multi-brand parent company. Under that standing definition, brands owned by multi-brand holding companies were screened but are outside the category — which is why some of the metro's best-known coffee names do not appear in this field.
A Gate 2 adverse-signal search was run on 2026-08-24 and refreshed 2026-08-26 (closures, lawsuits, labour disputes, ownership changes, health findings). It did not identify a substantiated legal, closure, ownership, labour or health finding affecting eligibility. This is a statement about what a documented search found on those dates, not a guarantee that nothing exists.

⚠️ Open Status Warning: Operating status confirmed from the shop's own current published hours (August 2026) — Monday–Friday 7am–5pm, Saturday/Sunday 8am–3pm at 4141 Troost Ave. We did not independently visit. Kansas City's field has seen several closures since 2022, so always check current hours before visiting. If this shop has closed, please contact us so we can update this page.
CoffeeLabAdvisor does not conduct in-person shop visits. The verdict is based on independent specialist and local press coverage, a national award-program record, and the shop's own published statements, address and hours. We did not taste the coffee and did not assess barista technique. Menu, pricing, and plant-based milk options were verified from the shop's own published cafe page and menu (captured 2026-08-26; the menu is hosted at a July 2024 upload path, disclosed above). Oddly Correct has not shared formal documentation for CoffeeLab Verified status; shared documentation would resolve the equipment, menu and pricing gaps firsthand.
Shops that share formal documentation confirming their equipment and sourcing claims (invoices, spec sheets, roaster agreements) carry the CoffeeLab Verified badge. Oddly Correct Coffee Roasters has not yet received one — shared documentation would confirm the equipment and roaster lineup firsthand.
Award recognition is not a verdict on any other shop. The following are recognised in their own right, for what we found in their favour.
Recognised for putting Vietnamese coffee culture on Kansas City's specialty map, with a fully named Vietnam-to-cup supply chain.
Recognised for a decade of in-house roasting in the West Bottoms.
Recognised for a family-run, Indigenous-owned coffee house and roastery serving three Kansas City neighborhoods, with current-year national coverage.
The winner is the candidate our documented-evidence screening selected for full scoring under the CoffeeLabAdvisor 2026 methodology, and the only candidate scored. Because the rest of the field was not scored, this award is not a quantitative ranking of the city and should not be read as one. An Honorable Mention is a recognition, not a placing: we do not rank the shops we did not score, and nothing on this page should be read as an assessment of any business other than the winner.
