CoffeeLab Award 2026Coffee Shop of the Year

Blue Mind Roasting — Meridian-Kessler / 38th & Broadway, 646 E 38th St, Indianapolis, IN 46205 · Open since 2023

Award issued: August 23, 2026 · Published by CoffeeLabAdvisor

12 candidates screened · 1 fully scored · 4 independent sources on the winner from 4 publications (own-source material cited separately, never counted) · 21 across the field · 5 gates passed · Evaluated August 2026 · No visit, no tasting — documented evidence only

Blue Mind Roasting is a family roasting business that grew out of a garage in the mid-2010s and opened its own café at 646 E 38th St in February 2023. It roasts what it serves, on a 12-kilo US Roaster Corp, and it keeps the list deliberately short — five or fewer coffees at a time, so each one can be worked on properly. A particularly strong documented feature is the sourcing trail: Daily Coffee News names the importers behind the coffee by origin — Farmers Project in Costa Rica, Umuko Coffee in Rwanda, JNP Coffee in Burundi — which is a step further down the supply chain than naming a roaster alone. In our August 2026 screening it was also the only candidate we identified with independent specialist coverage from the current year: Sprudge gave it a dedicated section in its June 2026 Guide to Coffee in Indianapolis. CoffeeLabAdvisor screened a qualified field of 12 coffee shops using its published coffee shop methodology; the winner is the candidate our documented-evidence screening selected for full scoring, and is the only candidate carried through to a six-dimension scorecard. Because the rest of the field was not scored, this award is not a quantitative ranking of the city and should not be read as one. We do not publish comparative scores for the rest of the field because we did not score the rest of the field.

2026 is the inaugural year of CoffeeLab Awards. Our methodology evaluates the whole coffee journey — equipment, grinders, roasters, brands, and independent coffee shops — holistically, using the strongest publicly available specialist evidence we identify. We document our research and decision-making for every award, and we expect the methodology to evolve as we gain experience.

📍 Location

646 E 38th St, Indianapolis, IN 46205 — the café occupies the Rose Building at 38th and Broadway.

☕ Specialty Focus

Roasts in-house on a 12-kilo US Roaster Corp, with a deliberately short list of five or fewer coffees at a time, bought through named importers.

📋 Award Category

Our flagship city award. An editorial selection: the independent coffee shop in the city that our documented-evidence screening selected for full scoring, carried through to a six-dimension scorecard. The rest of the field is screened but not scored, so the award is not a ranking of the city. The award level (Gold/Silver/Bronze) is an absolute score on that shop against the published rubric, not a placing against other businesses. This is an evidence-led editorial award, not a blind tasting or citywide sensory ranking: we do not score every eligible shop, and no claim is made that a winner would defeat every other shop in its city in a head-to-head tasting.

🏆 Award Level

Silver (87/100) — the tier follows the score: six equal-weighted dimensions averaging 87.33, rounded half up to 87 against a Gold threshold of 90. Blue Mind is strongest exactly where an awards programme should want evidence — named importers by origin, in-house roasting, and independent specialist coverage that reaches the current year. Two things hold it down, and both are evidence gaps rather than faults: one of the six dimensions in that total is an insufficient-evidence default rather than a finding, because we could not evidence a plant-based milk programme from the shop's own published menu; and the café has traded at this address only since February 2023, which is a short record. Scoring below.

Why Blue Mind Roasting Won

We love the relationships that we are able to form with smaller importers.

— Andy Hassler, co-owner — Blue Mind Roasting

Named Importers, Not Just Named Roasters

Blue Mind can show the importers behind the coffee, by origin: Farmers Project for Costa Rican lots, Umuko Coffee for Rwandan, JNP Coffee for Burundian, alongside larger importers for year-round offerings — all reported by Daily Coffee News rather than claimed by the shop. Because Blue Mind roasts what it serves, that trail runs from importer to roaster to bar without changing hands.

Roasted In-House, on a Deliberately Short List

Blue Mind roasts on a 12-kilo US Roaster Corp machine and, as Indianapolis Monthly reported in 2021, deliberately holds its range to five coffees or fewer at any one time so that each can be refined. That is a legible quality discipline rather than a claim about taste — and we did not taste the coffee, so it is the discipline we are recognising, not a verdict on the cup.

Independent Coverage That Reaches the Current Year

Four independent publications across five years: Indianapolis Monthly (January 2021), Daily Coffee News (March 2023), WISH-TV (January 2025), and Sprudge (June 2026), which gave Blue Mind a dedicated section in its Guide to Coffee in Indianapolis. That matters because an award dated 2026 should rest on evidence that reaches 2026. In our August 2026 screening, Blue Mind was the only candidate we identified for which that was true — a statement about what our research turned up on that date, not about every coffee shop in the city.

Owner-Operated, and Documented as Such

Andy and Sarah Hassler own and run the business, and our four cited publications document them doing so at different points — from the garage roaster in 2021 through the café opening in 2023 to Sprudge in 2026, which quotes their approach to staff: "We also work to create a culture among our staff that allows people to feel at home when they are in our shop." We have no independent measure of barista skill — no competition placements, and no in-person visit — so this dimension rests on documented ownership continuity, not on technique.

Evidence Scorecard

Each score rates the strength of the publicly documented evidence we found for that dimension — not first-hand testing. We did not visit this shop or taste its coffee. That is our standard evaluation tier, defined in the methodology; hands-on assessment belongs to CoffeeLab Verified, which this shop has not undertaken.

Overall: 87/100 — Silver. "Coffee Shop of the Year" names the candidate our documented evidence and specialist-signal screening selected for full scoring — it is an editorial selection, not the output of scoring every shop in the city against each other. Silver reflects the absolute-rubric score for that candidate. Scored on six equal-weighted dimensions per our venue awards methodology. An evidence score does not represent a current sensory rating; it reflects the strength, independence and recency of the documentation available under this programme's rubric.
What Operational Consistency measures: sustained operation and a stable, documented offer over time — longevity, continuity at the awarded address, and documented continuity of operation over time. It is not a measurement of shot-to-shot consistency in the cup, which would require in-person testing we do not perform.
This dimension could not be evidenced, so it carries the methodology's insufficient-evidence default of 78 rather than a measurement of this shop. One of the six dimensions in this total is therefore a default, not a finding — stated here because the overall score depends on it. It is not a neutral figure: it is a substantive assumption that unknown equals 78, and the reasoning is published in our methodology.

What the Specialist Community Says

Unlike general review aggregation, we grounded this in independent, named, checkable sources rather than anonymous review excerpts:

"From humble beginnings roasting on a Hottop in their garage, husband-and-wife team Andy and Sarah Hassler have grown Blue Mind Coffee Roasting into a community staple in Indianapolis's Meridian-Kessler neighborhood."

Sprudge, Jun 2026

"We love the relationships that we are able to form with smaller importers."

Daily Coffee News, Mar 2023

"I didn't even like coffee until Andy started roasting his own and it wasn't burnt-tasting."

Indianapolis Monthly, Jan 2021

"Two years ago, we started this shop in February and it's been great."

WISH-TV, Jan 2025

Key signals: importers named by origin in independent trade press, in-house roasting on named equipment, a documented five-or-fewer range discipline, and continuous owner operation reported at four separate points between 2021 and 2026. Honesty notes, because they matter more than the signals: the equipment and importer details come from a single March 2023 report and have not been re-confirmed since, so the current lineup may differ; the Sprudge and WISH-TV pieces establish that the business is trading and well regarded but do not assess the coffee; and we publish no rating figure for this shop, because the public aggregators disagree with each other and we could not trace a single number to a citable origin with a date. A rating quoted without a source is not evidence.

Their Equipment Setup

La Marzocco Linea PB (espresso), Fetco XTS Twin (batch brew), and a 12-kilo US Roaster Corp roaster, per Daily Coffee News reporting in March 2023 — not re-confirmed since, and not confirmed via shop-provided documentation.

We do not earn commission on café equipment: professional bar machines are not sold through our affiliate programme, and nothing in this section is a product recommendation. If you want home equipment evaluated on the same evidence standard, see our Best Overall Espresso Machine award or Best Overall Burr Grinder award.

🌿 Plant-Based Milk

○○○○○Not Confirmed

Not confirmed. Blue Mind's own published menu does not name any plant-based milk; it records a vegan option on at least one drink, and third-party listings describe vegan options being available. That is not enough for us to describe a programme, so this dimension carries our insufficient-evidence default score rather than a finding about this shop.

Known Limitations

No coffee shop is perfect, and no award page should pretend otherwise. We publish these honestly so you can make an informed decision.

🥛 Plant-based milk is not evidenced — this dimension uses the insufficient-evidence default

Known limitation

Blue Mind's own published menu names no plant-based milk. One of the six equal-weighted dimensions in the 87 total therefore carries our insufficient-evidence default of 78 rather than a measurement. It is marked with a dagger in the scorecard. This is the single largest caveat on this award: a reader who thinks an unevidenced dimension should not count toward a total is making a fair criticism of our method, and we would rather they could see it than not.

📰 Equipment and importers rest on one 2023 report

Known limitation

The espresso machine, batch brewer, roaster and the three named importers all come from a single Daily Coffee News article of 27 March 2023. Roasting lineups change. None of it has been independently re-confirmed since, and shop-provided documentation for CoffeeLab Verified status would resolve it.

📅 Our sources disagree on when the business started

Known limitation

Indianapolis Monthly (2021) reports roasting beginning in 2014; Daily Coffee News (2023) describes an eight-year-old company, which implies 2015. We publish both rather than choose one. The café at this address opened in February 2023, which is the date this award relies on and which is independently confirmed.

⏱️ A short record at the awarded address

Known limitation

The café has traded at 646 E 38th St only since February 2023. That is a short continuous record, and it is why Operational Consistency scores 85 — the lowest evidenced dimension on this scorecard.

🔎 Gate 2 adverse-signal pass — what the search returned

Research note

A Gate 2 adverse-signal search was run on 2026-08-17 (closures, lawsuits, labour disputes, ownership changes, health inspection findings, 2024-2026). It did not identify a substantiated legal, closure, ownership, labour or health finding affecting eligibility, and the BBB profile carries no complaints. This is a statement about what a documented search found on that date, not a guarantee that nothing exists.

What We Didn't Do

CoffeeLabAdvisor does not conduct in-person shop visits. The verdict is based on independent trade-press and local coverage, cross-referenced sourcing and equipment claims, and the shop's own published menu, hours and prices. We did not taste the coffee, did not assess barista technique, and did not verify the importer relationships with the importers themselves. Blue Mind Roasting has not shared formal documentation for CoffeeLab Verified status.

Shops that share formal documentation confirming their equipment and sourcing claims (invoices, spec sheets, roaster agreements) carry the CoffeeLab Verified badge. Blue Mind Roasting has not yet received one — shared documentation would confirm the equipment and roaster lineup firsthand.

Honorable Mentions

Award recognition is not a verdict on any other shop. The following are recognised in their own right, for what we found in their favour.

⭐ Honorable Mention — Bovaconti Coffee

Recognised for a named multi-roaster curation model and the longest single-address record in the field.

⭐ Honorable Mention — Rabble Coffee

Recognised for a curated multi-roaster model with a long trade-press record.

⭐ Honorable Mention — Coat Check Coffee

Recognised for genuine national recognition on USA Today's 10Best list.

The winner is the candidate our documented-evidence screening selected for full scoring under the CoffeeLabAdvisor 2026 methodology, and the only candidate scored. Because the rest of the field was not scored, this award is not a quantitative ranking of the city and should not be read as one. An Honorable Mention is a recognition, not a placing: we do not rank the shops we did not score, and nothing on this page should be read as an assessment of any business other than the winner.
